So maybe it should be called PlayStation 7, as in Windows 7 redeemed and revitalized that OS so maybe the same can happen to the PSP brand.

BUT! If you take the remaining 4 letters and subtract 1 to represent the missing S you get 3. 95+3 equals 98. Windows 98! That was certainly better than 95. Now, take PS and subtract three from the P, you get M. Now, divide 98 by S [which is 19] and you get 5 rounding down and that's E (fifth letter)! Windows ME.

So now divide 98 by ME and...

To be honest I actually take a liking to it.

Still, it would be funny to see Kevin Butler show up and say something like "You guys shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet." and go to announce the real name xD

Agreed. Extremely terrible name. Images of trips to Walgreens, or GNC spring to mind, not kick-ass portable gaming.

And worse still, you know half of all the games are going to have a Vita tag on the end: Resistance Vita, Killzone Vita, InFamous Vita, LittleBigVita . . .

I never thought anyone could possibly come up with a worse name for a game system than Wii, but leave it to Sony to dig down real deep and come up with one.

Still a day one purchase. Gotta get my Uncharted Vita fix.

I really dont get the hate for the name, sure it sounds meaningless but does that really make it such a horrible name? They could have called it worse, I mean at least PSvita is easy to say as opposed to...oh hell ANYTHING they could have chosen.

The proposed name does noticably (and disturbingly) fit their font styling. Plus it has the bonus that it cannot be abbreviated much, which was one of the reasons the "Wii" name existed.

But Sony moving away from the oh so generic (but expected) chronological numbering method? No, no way... Are the teams that make Sony Erricsons' in charge of the naming now?

@Red Deer The "vita" part of the font is actually wrong IMHO. The P and S are the PS3 font, but the VITA is something new, and just doesn't fit.

I understand where your going there, but the point in the "Wii" being called the "Wii" was because it could be refered to without the branding of "Nintendo" infront of it (everyone at one point would know what you're talking about), It couldn't be abbreviated. Plus the "Wii" thing was pronounced like "We" which fitted Nintendo's strategy to go after family gaming.

The reason which the "Revolution" codename didn't stay is because it could be abbreviated into the "Rev" etc etc, whilst the name managed to perfectly portray exactly what the Wii did to gaming industry it was one of the reasons the codename was ditched; for (at the time) a very silly console name. I believe it was all in a 'Iwata Asks' interview.

C'mere Sony, we need to talk.

You're really bad with names, and I'm starting to worry about you. I like some of your other brand names, but the whole ''Q'' thing and now this. It's just not working out. Why don't you sit down for a while and really think about it. There's still time left.

If this is true, this will be the first time Sony actually names a PlayStation product, instead of incrementing the number (PS2, PS3) or stating the obvious (Portable).

I'm fully expecting Kevin Butler to walk on stage with a video for PS Vita playing. Then, suddenly, the video stops and he starts giving a well rehearsed (in a good way) laugh and proclaims, "Ha! Oh man I had you guys going didn't I? Can you imagine if we actually called it that? Now, here to talk more about the PSP2 is..."

Yeah I have recurring nightmares when they announced the new Nintendo console was going to be called the "Wii". I mean seriously? This name is a little better in my opinion but it hardly describes the technological marvel that is the NGP.

'Vita' is another way of putting Beta (the pronunciation I believe), the second letter of the Greek alphabet. Second, being 2.

I'm still all for naming it the "Playstation Better_than_your_Handheld"
PBH for short.

Beta is also a stage of development, where an unfinished product is already usable but needs some more working around. So no, it's not that.
