Blizzard Dota still on the way, has undergone 'some massive overhauls'
29
Blizzard Dota, the Defense of the Ancients-style official mod that was shown off at last year's BlizzCon, is still a work in progress, according to lead producer Chris Sigaty. The other three mods shown last year were released a little while ago to the community, but the Dota mod, which pits all kinds of Blizzard franchise characters up against each other in a real-time battle, needed a little extra work, apparently.
"We basically put it back up in the shop and did some massive overhauls to some things, which I'm not going to go into specific detail about," Sigaty told Joystiq at a press event last week. "But yeah, we are working on Blizzard Dota, and we do intend to launch it at or around the time of Heart of the Swarm, but the official details will be online later."
Will the mod eventually require the upcoming Heart of the Swarm expansion to play? Sigaty's got nothing yet: "We're not even talking about the business level decision of it at this point." But rest assured that, somewhere on Blizzard's Irvine, CA campus, there are still developers fighting over who'd win in a fight, Thrall, Diablo, or Tychus Findlay.

Errr.... What about Valve's DotA 2?
This is getting confusing.

@yoshinatsu Blizzard is internally developing their own official mod to their game while the guy who made the original unofficial mod from Blizzard's game is working with Valve to release an official sequel to his unofficial mod, but not for a Blizzard game. How is that not clear as glass? :p

Oh wait... and there's League of Legends as well which is a stand alone DotA clone. Not to sure who made it.

So how is Valve going to convince me to get a $50 game when Blizzard is also releasing a free mod that's mostly the same thing for a game I already own?

Valve has yet to put a price on DOTA2. It could be free for all we know. It could end up being like LoL, free with optional microtransactions. Why do you think Valve was testing the waters with the MannCo. Store? And they have several times said that with DOTA2, they will add a lot of community functionality into the Source Engine.

I'd rather get DotA 2 than this, but there's no reason not to have BOTH, right?

I don' t think blizzard DOTA will be free. You will probably have to buy heart of the swarm or pay for it but who's not going to buy te expansion if you already have wings of liberty?

I love Blizzard and I understand their "we'll release it when it's ready" but honestly with them (and Valve as well) it feels like they are just being coy at times. I'd rather they hold their tounges until they at least have a vague idea of when it'll be released instead of the song and dance we get with these two companies. I mean three years since announcement (so like probably 5 years since start of development) and Diablo 3 is still not even a firm release date. God knows if the third party of the Half Life 2 content is going to come out at all.
This is the only industry that hypes like this and it's frustrating. The annoying thing is it's likely not to change because it gets numbers but there's a burn out point and I'm getting pretty close with a lot of Blizzard's work. That being said I'm sure the mod and the upcoming expansion as well as Diablo 3 will be awesome but it takes some of the shine of when you feel like you're saying "finally" as in "thank god this is done" and not "FINALLY" in that "finally I've got my hands on this and can't wait to get home (or for the download to finish) and play it."

@commonperson The issue is that people have played Blizz Dota (myself included) at events such as Blizzcon 2010. And I was worried because the build of it that I played did have a lot of work to be done before it could be compared to either DotA or HoN for gameplay. So hearing this is assuring to me that they didn't just scrap the project. Which was something that I was worried about after the other 3 mods came out and this one wasn't even mentioned.
But I agree it sucks that they don't have release dates but it speaks to how good the company is when people are getting hyped over the smallest details (I just got the details on Heart of the Swarm and am excited for that, but that won't be out till next year). However the reason that we have these super positive feelings towards the games is because they take their time and make a phenomenal game. They put their game through extensive QA and balancing. And yes they don't always get 100% of the bugs or 100% balanced but that's to be expected. They still release products that are much better off than many products that release. I can tell you that my expectation anymore is that the games I buy are not going to work when I try to play them day 1. However Wings of Liberty I loaded up and was playing matches an hour or so later when I stopped my campaign.

@Grimbear13 I understand that, I'd prefer a dev pull back on a product then release it half finished. Valve and Blizzard are worst offenders for just holding off but they also produce the cream of the crop with very few missteps and consistently good product. I think it's the trend of the industry as a whole that bugs me. The entire world of secrecy that's developing up around game developers just can over build hype. But I do see your point. Ah well, I'll still be in line for the games when they come out. :-)

I agree that it's frustrating when game companies seemingly lead us on and tease us with tid bits of the delicious things they're cooking up. However, this isn't the case with just games. Movies have always been marketed around building hype. Lots of entertainment and media does this. It's a paradox of sorts: people today want more and more quicker and quicker and get frustrated when they don't. In the 90's everyone was stoked when a new game came out, regardless of how long it had been teased for. We're just inundated with so many games now. I'm fine with waiting for quality games.
