PSA: Plants vs. Zombies free on Android today
57
Time is already passing, and you're not downloading Plants vs. Zombies on your Android device -- for zero dollars! Frankly, that seems really silly to us. Sure, Popcap already released the game on just about every other piece of electronics you own, but that doesn't make it any less wonderful and addicting. Did we mention it's free? Maybe we should point that out again, 'cause it's totally free.

Only in America... unfortunately. I guess they figure the frost up here in the north kills the plants and keeps the zombies at bay.

I'm in the UK and was able to muddle my way through:
1; create a new throwaway email address (gmail etc) - you might need to specify that your location is USA when setting it up
2; create a new account at amazon.com using your new email address
3; go to "1-click settings" and fill out the details using any random US address and a credit card number from fakenamegenerator.com
4; install the Amazon Appstore app on your phone, login with your new 'US' account and you should then be able to access all the free apps
Note: I tried this a couple of times on my laptop and it didn't work. Tried today on my phone using 3G (not wifi) and it worked first time - not sure if that's coincidence though

Perhaps you could edit this to make it clearer that this is via Amazon Marketplace and not the Android Market?

@Leivan And with a warning that older phones are going to need to clear ALOT of space for this sucker: 80 MB is more free space than my Droid would have after uninstalling Flash.

I've been kind of frustrated by the release... It doesn't work on Motorola's DROID phone, but there are other ones it doesn't work on either such the myTouch 3G Slide.
I was able to purchase it on Amazon.com though, so I guess I'll get to play it whenever I replace my phone.

I don't think he represents a majority by any means. I've had a Droid Incredible for a year now and have had no compatibility issues.

I realize that I too do not represent a majority, but (at least) a lot of the people with my phone/OS seem to complain about other things... such as random shutdowns; not really that Android apps won't work.

Crap like this? What crap? You mean how new phones are released every year with better hardware in them?
Kind of like the iPhone?

Every year? New Android phones are released every month!
Anyway, I was referring to the incompatibility on certain devices. I wish there was an easier way to know what games/apps you can or cannot use. Also if your phone is only a year or two old, you shouldn't suddenly be locked out of the latest apps.

You can bypass the incompatibility error the amazon app store gives you by buying it from your computer, going into your purchased apps, and then download it to your phone.

Ok sorry this is off topic but does anyone know why Gamecenter has added 6 achievments for the game that can't be earned because they are for game modes not in the iphone version? They are listed under Gamecenter but not in the game itself. Does the iPad version have these modes and therefor able to get the achievments and thats why they are in Gamecenter?

Question: I might get an Android phone in the near future, but I don't have one right now. Is there anyway to get the game now so I can download it to my future phone when I get it? I have an Amazon account and all, and it would be nice to have it when the phone is purchased and all.
Posted: May 31st 2011 6:12PM leobebes said
@ThePotato
All downloaded apps get tied to the email account that is tied into your android phone. So if you buy a new phone you can always go to the market and press menu>my apps. That should give you a listing of all the apps you have purchased or downloaded. Then you can re-download them if you have to if they are not on your old SD card.

I've given up on the amazon market for android. The service totally hosed my Droid, dragging down the performance to a crawl, plus updates from the normal market stopped showing up properly, and eventually my phone just stopped receiving any sort of OTA updates or phone calls despite showing as on network, which I didn't figure out until I tried to make a call but couldn't. I killed the amazon market service and all my performance problems were gone immediately, so I uninstalled it and it's been reliable as ever been since.
Even if it wasn't for that, I don't like the fact that the apps will only run if you have the amazon service on your phone, and the added update notifications are a pain. I'd rather spend a couple bucks on supporting developers to keep my phone stable and fast, and my apps free of added DRM.

@devwild Wow, the Amazon Marketplace + Droid X is truly a fail. I should not have to go through all of these steps just so I can get this free game. It's such a hassle I have canceled and given up. It just leaves a bad feeling in my mouth that all this crap was installed and info sent over to Amazon. SUX

Holy god. Addicting and addictive do not share a definition. This is a scourge upon Internet English.

The use of addicting in this article is fine. Addictive is always used as an adjective:
This soda is very addictive.
However, addicting can be used as a verb or an adjective:
This soda is addicting me to its delicious flavor. (transitive verb)
This soda is very addicting. (present participle adjective)
It's safer to just use addictive in this case though, so people don't start calling you out about it.

Was trying to get this on my phone, but you gotta jump through a lot of hoops to actually install the app.

Side Note: The amazon marketplace is actually solid if you can get it set up. They have been throwing some really good apps for you for free (10$ ones)
So if you set it up today for this, I'm SURE you will download like 15 other apps as well.
