From what i'm hearing, this is looking to be just about as cumbersome as the DSiware Store.

As much as I love Nintendo's games...I still feel like they don't "Get it" from a hardware perspective. They just don't understand modern hardware/online services....

What do you mean? They do a great job with hardware/industrial design. They've just been weak about online services. But from the 3DS it looks like they're learning.

@Timjoy Hardware, they're learning.. leap from DS to 3DS is very, very significant.

Online, this is a step-up from the footage I saw. Much better than tapping through a mass amount of pages on dsiware with 2 apps to a page while browsing. And they load.

So Nintendo's obsession with using aged and underpowered hardware that cripples its systems' potential is your idea of Ninty doing a great job with hardware design? Puh-leeze!

Wait, they're actually trying to make a user-friendly store interface and improve Internet functions?

Nintendo, welcome to 2011!

@Red Runner No, welcome to 2001 - Nintendo is still years behind any and all of its competitors when it comes to online functionality. You need to be ahead of the curve, and Nintendo's approach has been tepid at best.

I was trying to give 'em some credit, but you're right. I still don't get Nintendo's aversion to online functionality, because there was no excuse for the Wii's incredibly limp and limited online play. Unfortunately, some devs are still using only local co-op on 3DS when it has the power to do so much more. (SSFIV matches on it are always lag free! C'mon people, use what you have!)

Looking pretty solid so far, that rating system sounds good for all of the little kids who thinks it's funny just to one star every game, I don't go off of ratings myself but for the people who do I would hate to see MML3 prototype go badly in the shop because of a bs rating system.

@Captaindrek1 Except for the fact that you need to purchase and play the game before the rating option even appears. It would've been stupid of Nintendo to allow ratings to be entered, regardless of purchase and playtime.

The ratings system (play for an hour before giving a rating) is so exciting that Nintendo implemented it into the Wii's Nintendo Channel years ago. :p

I'm happy with the way it'll be. The 1 hour play time requirement for reviews is absolutely perfect. People won't be able to spam games with low or high ratings.

Also, who the hell is going to spend $1000 on eContent in a month?

"I don't think there is going to be $1,000 worth of content available in the first 7 months.
There isn't even $1,000 worth of 3DS games to buy on stores shelves right now."

Since when has a console ever had $1,000 worth of games to buy on store shelves on its first month of release?

@GiantGamer This is what I came here to post. In the years since the DSi shop went up, has $1000 worth of content even been released? I have a hard time believing that the 3DS shop would be too different in this regard.

@creid8 Isn't there going to be a portable Virtual Console? That could easily become $1000.

Doesnt sound too cucumbersome to me tbh. Unless the sliding of 20 windows is slow.

Using the PSN store i have to go through an average of 3 windows before i get my content. Same applies here tbh.

The PS Store is a mess. I don't go in there much, but I wanted to get some 3D demos last night, and it really is a pain the way everything is set up.

This eShop layout isn't bad, it could be better, but I'll take it.

Making players play the game before they review is a great idea!
Now if they can figure out a way to make reviewers finish games...

Seems to me like Nintendo don't really get the whole idea of setting up a purdy and still usable interface for their stuff (this eShop and the Wii for example).

To be honest I agree that the interface is crap, even if they've improved it slightly.

But

and it's a big but, so let me do that again

BUT

I have never had trouble buying anything from the WiiWare shop. And it doesn't require too many clicks. You go to the shop, click into wiiware, click into recent titles, and there it is. Or if it's an old game you can click the search and type in the first few letters.

Maybe the shop is not great at showing you what you could be buying but I do not need a shop to do that. They send out a press release every week which is covered on Joystiq for instance, and then there are fairly decent review sites out there as well. So all I need the shop to do is sell me things, and that part seems to work okay.

Basically I think there are obvious problems with Nintendo online services (especially before 3ds, which at least has the single friend code) but the shop isn't one of them.

And neither has Microsoft. Shopping for games on the 360 is clunky and isn't really that much better than the Wiiware or DSiware shops.

As for their other online features, they certainly have a ways to go. But even Sony, who has the online experience, still has problems. In a couple of respects, in fact, Sony's problems have made me appreciate that Nintendo doesn't store credit card information.

eShop is a HUGE improvement over the DSi Shop and seems like it's going to do just fine to me. We're all probably spoiled by 3G/4G/Wi-Fi/persistent online connectivity in our pockets via smartphones and tablet-like devices so it's understandable why Nintendo catches a lot of flack for their timid attitude toward better online. But the 3DS isn't an iPhone, Android device, Galaxy Tab, or whatever: it's a portable gaming handheld first and foremost. And I'd rather the 3DS do one thing great (gaming) instead of doing multiple things okay.

I still don't get why we need to buy totally different point cards for the the 3DS eShop. Even in that regard Nintendo seems off the track.

Good to see them finally getting aggressive in that space, though honestly i likely won't use the service enough to appreciate if its much better than Shop Channel, which i also didn't use much. I just don't like spending much money on downloadable games (though i'll have my sights set on a few classics and at least Cave Story and Shantae since i never got a DSi)

Should be nice.

Any improvement over the DSi shop is nice, it might have some decent games but scrolling through the game lists was a pain. I ended up just googling for lists of games to figure out what I should buy.

Try to have a shop system similar to Steam.

I think Wii Shop has definitely improved since release. Their highlighting top games or hardcore games when you go into the channel is a start.

If they would recommend games based on games already downloaded, that would be good.

And, who the hell spends $250 a month on any online gaming, or gaming at all (except a business like IGN or Joystiq etc maybe who need all games). If you have that much free time for gaming, you probably don't have the income to allow that much spent on gaming every month.
