I like it. Microsoft is unifying all of their products into one interface. Thats smart because it will help to create a "Microsoft" design philosophy / identity like Apple has done with huge success.

@R Planteer I gotta say, as far as design goes, metro UI looks awesome, maybe a bit too extra rainbow-y on windows 8 stuff, but the simplicy and block colours looks awesome.
I really like the look of this dashboard :)

I'm thinking the same. I understand the idea of trimming things down into a more sleek appearance, but what is the sense in THAT much negative area.
It seems counterproductive to minimize menu images. That just means irritation and people me wishing they could just go up to the screen and pull on a corner to maximize what I am looking at lol. and I can see perfectly fine!

I love the PS3 one. I also love how easy it is to get custom ones for FREE. I have a Fallout 3 Pip-Boy one.

At least you can customize your PS3 menu with a cool theme. This is just white everywhere. I'm not trying to start a PS3 vs 360 menu debate, but at least there are visual options for the PS3 even though the layout will be the same.
I think the layouts for the 360 and PS3 are both just fine. It's usually pretty easy to find what you're looking for on both systems if you're familiar with it. I can't say I'm thrilled for this to be the new standard for the 360 though...

I wasn't very thrilled to learn that the dasboard will be revamped again. I like what it is like right now. But, hope I get used to soon after.

it doesn't really need a redesign so soon but what it does show is how bloody old the PS3 XMB is. That's not been touched in five years and it shows. It looks archaic compared to interfaces on other devices.
And don't bring up the "it ain't broke ..." argument or "because it works ... " there's always a better design solution and there's definitely a way to make the XMB look better besides having to buy themes to change icons.

There are plenty of free themes that change the background and icon.

And they are the same variations of static suckiness.
Ooh, a background picture. Ooh the icons have gone angular.
They do nothing to radically change the same tired look the XMB has. Only the dynamic themes make any effort to do that and those you have to pay for.

No, it's a whole new interface that also happens to now have full Kinect compatibility unlike the current setup that has a short separate Kinect menu. I'm glad, because I don't use Kinect for menu navigation, but I probably will now.

That's pretty awful.
Sparse, in that each screen looks empty.
Irregular - did you see how the main category bar seems to drift up and down on each screen?
Cluttered - make a block of 6 or 8 squares to represent different games or features, then squeeze them all into the center %20 of the screen.
Boring - Dashboard Themes will still be totally obscured.
Ad-heavy - now every page is shilling for the marketplace. You cannot escape!
So long as the guide button still brings up the old blades, at least I'll never have to try to actually use this hideous wretch.

A mock-up might explain the wandering category bar, but the other issues are still valid.
Since mock-ups like this serve as the end goal for the real software to aspire to, I think it's safe to say that if the mock-ups look like crap the real deal will smell like poop.
