Yeah, the second game really pushed the shooter part, it was streamlined to the hilt. But the narrative and characters is what keeps me coming back.

I remember going car shopping. When I went out for a test drive with the salesman, for whatever reason this dude was absolutely in love with the voice control system. He kept on using the voice controls to do things like turn the air conditioner up or down two degrees, or turn on the stereo.

Just like how Kinect requires you to say "Xbox", pause, and then say the command, this guy would have to signal the voice control system, pause, and issue his command. If he could remember the right phrase. Then he frequently had to repeat it once or twice to get the system to register what he said.

In short, he was frequently taking 10 seconds to accomplish what he could have done in half a second using a control knob or a touchscreen. And he kept doing it over and over. Politely but firmly, I finally had to tell this guy to cut it out.

I have no interest in using voice controls to play Mass Effect 3.

I am not cool with the omni-blade. I thought omni-tools were just holographs. This seems like an unnecessary stretch.

@A Sandwich Maybe, though Tech Armor and Drones clearly have some capacity to interact with the physical world. "Hard" Light constructs ain't just for Green Lanterns it seems.

@A Sandwich

why would you think theyre just holograms? joker uses hard light to driv the normandy, you regularly push buttons on your omni tool to cast abilities and interact with the world, and you use hard light in several flavors for protection. not to mention lasers and biotic powers are little more than a ranged version of weaponized hard light.

i want my hard light transforming mech suit, with jump jets glide wheels and dual swords, gundam style! jkjk

if anything you should be wondering why the game didnt weaponize hard light for melee combat sooner.

@Gabriel is
Mass Effect Codex states that Haptic Adaptive Interfaces are not hard-light constructs.
http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Codex/Technology
The Omni-Tool section does say that it is capable of 'assembling small three-dimensional objects,' but it still doesn't really fly with the laser-sword idea. Though it is a stretch as Mr. Sandwich said, chances are they will find a way to justify it, the same they did with omni-gel disappearing.

They found a way to justify ammo in the 2nd game, I'm sorry "heat sinks". Wouldn't mind getting back one of those infinite ammo guns from ME1.

(I know those guns really contain a block of metal that gets small pieces shaved off not making it infinite but you get the point)

Gears of War is fun when you want a mindless shooter. Both of them are great when played in co-op with a friend.

But if I want to play GoW, I play GoW. I don't play Mass Effect.

So far they have exactly two new RPG mechanics: evolving powers more than once and weapon customization. Evolving powers multiple times is a good thing, too bad they will still use the absolutely horrible ME2 skill system. Boo hoo, more than four skills gives their new CoD audience headaches? And it's so ridiculous that they're taking a straight shooter mechanic and acting like it's an RPG mechanic. No, being able to make decisions once in a while does not make a game an RPG.

ME1 was about 55% shooter and 45% RPG. ME2 was about 80% shooter and 20% RPG. ME3 keeps taking two steps backwards for every step forwards when it comes to being an RPG.

The Bioware way: remove rather than improve. And their new target audience is stupid enough to be happy when they removed the inventory instead of fixing it. Grenades? Hard to use, so let's remove them instead of fixing them (but at least we're back to CoD grenades in ME3, what an improvement!). Mako exploration wasn't perfect? Don't improve it, remove exploration completely. Too many similar weapons? Don't fix it, just give them two or three weapon in each category, many of which are DLC or locked until a specific point in the game. Any skills that aren't directly linked to combat? Delete delete delete.

It's the very definition of dumbing down, and morons praise it for trying to be yet another shooter that the market is drowning in already. These people sicken me.

@Mehbah I wouldn't go so far, but I agree that eliminating rather than reworking seemed to be very prevalent in ME3. The promises made about ME3 appear to be obvious proof that it wasn't uniformly favored at least.

We'll see.

@Mehbah This preview was specifically for a section of the game that showed combat only. As I said in the preview above, BioWare also wants to increase the "RPG" elements of the game. Stay tuned for more on those later on this week.

I'm very worried about certain combat elements I've seen so far, particularly the (instakill?) omni-blade, the turret/reaper stage, and now the ability to use the Cerberus mech, which I assume from the screenshots to be a big walking gun. I know it may be a bit too early to say, but these new introductions seem to imply that the devs are pushing a much more destructive and less refined style of fighting, opting simply for 'max firepower' to take down enemies rather than a more strategic use of squadmates, biotic/tech powers, and handheld weaponry that was required for the greater part of ME1 and 2.

Again, I might be being a little too judgemental (and I hope I am), but I really want to see that they've been working on more to add to the gameplay than just flashy baubles.

@eatmyasia I asked if the Omniblade was instakill, and got a sort of apathetic nod, which usually means there's something there that isn't supposed to be revealed to the press yet. My guess (guess!) is that it is instakill for most early enemies, but later enemies will have qualities that make strong melee attacks difficult sometimes.

@eatmyasia I'm sure the turret and mech sections are just cool parts designed to shake players up when things might be getting stagnant. Especially considering they're being used against a reaper and big targets, it's not like careful coordination and strategy would really do much anyway

Hears hoping that all these "adding back RPG" elements Bioware says their putting in ME3, they'll do the same for DAIII. I was so disappointed after playing DA: Origins for the first time in March (Loved the game so much I did 2 playthroughs for each race) in anticipation for DAII and got a completely different, saddening game.

Bioware, keep the way mages fought in DAII and make DAIII like Origins and you've got me.

We occupy a dismal space where every thread about RPG invariably devolves into a "discussion" about the demise of "true" RPGs, with no one able to clearly explain what the hell defines an RPG in the first place.

For me, it's about story and character interaction, with the ability to upgrade my own character stats. Staring at inventory or playing clunky combat does not make a game an RPG, it just makes it shitty.

They can refine and tweak the combat all they want - how does it make the game any less of an RPG?

@matrices couldn't agree more my man, Mass Effect lets you play a role of your character better than just about any games. There really should be a different kind of acronym for these things, that way people could complain it's not a SPG( Stat Progression Game) rather than RPG. I understand, and agree with wanting a good inventory and lots of customization, but I don't find that helps me connect with the character or story any deeper. Having played a lot of D&D in my time, I don't mind saying that it was the DMs descriptions or the players interactions that made me feel like I was part of a story, not having +3 defense on my belt.
