Nintendo Wii U announced

Nintendo Wii U -- that's the name of Nintendo's next console ... thing. The new high-definition system and controller pair was announced during the company's E3 2011 press conference, and is due to launch sometime in 2012.

The controller features a large, touch-capable screen, paired with two circle pads, a directional pad, face buttons, a camera, a gyroscope and an accelerometer. Nintendo is positioning it as an entertainment sharing device, with video and gameplay working across the controller and your home console.

It's weird, you guys.

I actually like the controller. Like, it looks like what the dramcast could have been.

I know you're going to hate this, but it's time to put it to rest. The Dreamcast failed. It's hard to hear but it's the honest truth.

Call it bad timing, bad support, bad coorporate choices, either way Sega consoles are gone now.

THIS EXACTLY. It took me until they started showing the graphics bird example to figure out that there really was even a new console. For the first half I thought it was just a peripheral. They really should have showed the actual console. It made their presentation very confusing.

Seriously, Nintendo. Your console looks great. It really does. But you need help when it comes to naming this stuff.

They basically integrated a U-Draw Tablet officially into the Wii control system.

Where are the 360/PS3 level graphics? Is this the modern day equivalent of the 64DD??

VITA? WII U? Who thinks of names in Japan these days? I mean... even they must see that those names suck. NGP was a better name and Wii U sounds too much like something you would say when a horrible stench enters your personal domain.

Yet both look like more then capeable consoles/handhelds.

As a multi-platform user who hasn't touched his Wii in 9 months(heh)
I was really looking for something more impressive than WiiU... Too many questions like how much are WiiU controllers going to cost, would have been nice to see a demo instead of stock pc development trailer footage... it looked like they could have just put 2 sticks on the 3ds and had the same integration ala PS3 to PSVita... I was underwhelmed and not sold...

From what I could tell, the console portion looks exactly like the wii except it laid out flat and the top 2 corners of the rectangular shape are cut off

Way to vague for me to call this reveal a success. Huge let down.

i see this thing being a repeat of the Wii - core gamer excitement for a year and a half, and then disappointment and abandonment after dealing with lackluster online and 3rd party support.

the controller tech is fascinating, and has A LOT of potential, but i have enough trust in Nintendo that they will actually use it to its full potential, much less allow 3rd party to do so.

i wanna see this succeed, because i feel like it can make serious waves. but i don't think Nintendo's sheer stubbornness, combined with the fact that they seem to be content riding on their brand name a lot of the time, will let this system reach its potential.

They should release the controller now to be used alongside the Wii and the new console whenever it's ready.

If the Wii was GameCube 1.5, then this will be Wii 1.5 with a strange peripheral and HDish video. Bring on a new generation of shovelware and recycled Nintendo IPs!

Those controllers are rubbish. How am I going to clip on my fake golf club and tennis racket?

I was hoping it would be called "Wii Wii"

Or Pii U. Half Dozen Gamecubes duct taped together with a Wiimote and DS duct taped together as the controller. Not bad if it comes in under $300.
