Silent Hill Collection will be on PlayStation 3 only, this fall [Update: PS3 exclusive for 'right now']
74
Konami didn't have much to say about the newly HD-ified Silent Hill Collection when it was announced during the company's pre-E3, but a short listing in a recent email revealed some more details. As we knew already, the Collection includes only Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 with new, high-definition graphics. What we didn't know is that the Silent Hill Collection will be available on PlayStation 3 only, unlike the Zone of the Enders HD Collection and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, both of which will also make it to Xbox 360.
That PlayStation 3 release brings with it the requisite trophy support, "all-new voice acting directed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, and a fall 2011 release window.
Update: In an interview with Joystiq, Silent Hill producer Tom Hulett stated that the Silent Hill Collection is PS3 exclusive "right now." According to Hulett, "It's always been a primarily Sony platform series. So, right now we're just aiming at a Sony exclusive, which isn't to say [that] in the future it won't be available anywhere else, but right now it's a Sony exclusive. Keep those multiplatform fingers crossed!

As long as the ZOE and MGS collections come to 360, I'm happy.

I wonder what the trophies will be like.
Hopefully they'll be interesting, and get people to explore the settings, and not just generic "Kill X amount of Y" and "Beat the game on every difficulty ever". I understand them being a couple of trophies like that, but not when the whole list is made up of them.
It's unfortunate 360 folk won't get the package too. Seems like a bit of a dick move, but probably has something to do with licensing or some other stupid crap.

What's up with not including the first game in all the collection? (SH 1, MGS 1)

Well, can you imagine trying to upgrade SH1 or MGS1 to HD? You can already almost count the pixels. Changing the resolution would really highlight those old polygons.
Also, Konami put them both on the PSN. So it's not like they're unavailable.

It's probably because MGS1 and SH1 were both initially released on the PS1.
However, not sure why they couldn't have just used the GameCube version of MGS1 in this collection. But I do like the idea of playing MGS: Peace Walker on PS3.

I don't buy the 'too old argument' as that only leaves them more open to smoothing and filtering options on the newer hardware. I mean just look at PS1 emulators on the PC and how crisp and clean they manage to display those old games.

@darrenF619 The Gamecube version was made by another developer and published with the help of Nintendo.

"I mean just look at PS1 emulators on the PC and how crisp and clean they manage to display those old games. "
So crisp and clean that it blinds you to the fact that the twelve polygons that make up each character are now stretched half across the screen, in your face, completely ruining the artwork.
I'll never get you people. You'll apparently drool all over a crude vector drawing of a turd, as long as it's all sharp and high res on your expensive HD set.
PSX graphics belong on a PSX, at 320x240 resolution, on a small CRT TV. That's what the art was tailored to look best on, and it does (same goes for other retro consoles). If you can't see that then there's just something wrong with the way you look at graphics.

I guess the fact that both games are PSOne available hasn't settled in yet.
If they can charge a higher primium for games without any reprogramming, the software will not be re-mastered.
Example in the reverse: The Super Mario Bros. Anniversary disc for the WIi. It could have been an $8 VC game, but instead it became a $30 disc with zero additions.

"People" should stop hiding behind that word, "opinion".
Also if you properly read what I typed, I'm saying it's -not- an improvement, in fact it completely shits all over any graphical beauty these games still have.
Yet some still want this only for the sake of their sharp lines. It's one of those things that's just inherently wrong on a very basic level.

New voice acting? Interesting. That was one of the weakest links of the Team Silent SH games, 2 especially with the exception of James' wife (who has one of the most agonizing and emotional monologues I've ever heard in a game). I thought the female characters in 3 were done well, but the men were terrible.

That was the first thing that jumped out at me, too,
In fact, the new voice acting is more important to me than the HD remastering.
Awesome.
Though I still don't understand why SH4: The Room isn't included.
Sure, it's the worst in the series, and yeah, so it wasn't even originally intended to be a Silent Hill game...but it's by no means a bad game, and it would certainly round out the collection.

Well, that's a little disappointing. I was kind of ignoring this because I'm stressing about the ZOE collection, but I've always heard that SH2 is one of the all-time greats. Thankfully it's not quite as RARE as ZOE.... I guess I'll pick this up when I get a PS3!
Now back to stressing over ZOE.

Because both MGS and SH1 work on PS3 out right and are both on PSN and neither is expensive, I understand their exclusion although it would be nice if they were not. If nobody noticed somehow that all the games in these collections are PS2/PSP games, well there you have it.
SH1 is also only $6 on PSN, and when the cheapest copy on Amazon is $140 new and $20 used, I think its a pretty good deal.

@SecondTomorrow You don't go to Amazon for collectible PS1 games anyway. You go to eBay.

Oh no, this is terrible. Come on Konami, there are SH fans on the Xbox too!! The only reason I got an Xbox over the PS3 is because it was cheaper >.<

@c86 You seem to believe I bought it just because of the price. From my point of view, they both had great games, but PS3 had a few more I wanted. Just because I chose the Xbox doesn't mean I hated it.

All new voice acting? Interesting. I actually grew quite fond of the acting in Silent Hill 2, but I understand the reasons for the change. I have much faith in McGlynn.
Also, why not Silent Hill 4?

I'm excited I'll finally get to play MG Snake Eater, and peace walker I heard was good. This silent hil BS is a little frustrating as I never got to play either of these. I look forward to replaying through MGS2 again. Gave up hope on it hitting the backwards compatible xbox games a long time ago.

Well, I think it's an odd choice not to include an Xbox 360 version, seeing how SH2 and SH4 were on Xbox (though not 3 for some reason... but it was on Windows).
Furthermore, to call it a collection, and yet it contains only two games from the series... seems... odd to me.

I liked the original voice acting. I'm a big David Lynch fan, who tends to have his actors speaking in clipped, awkward ways on purpose. It was hyperrealism, and in the Silent Hill universe it worked great most of the time.
I bet the real reason is more technical- original audio quality isn't up to snuff- as well as a matter of not being able to find many voice actors to pay royalties or some such. Also, the Detective in 3 died shortly after that game released.
BUT, I look forward to the new voice work, as it's a good reason for me to get yet another copy of the games. I already have three different copies of 2...

No silent Hill 4? It wasn't all that great but this all seem silly. No MGS1, no Silent Hill 1, and no Silent hill 4. This isn't what I would call a collection. Hell they could re-master Twin Snakes, I don't care how silly it was, the game-play was solid. And...Give us Shattered Memories if you can't give us the first game, or something!
I still got the all but I don't like to use my psp...-_-
