Last year, we spoke with Crystal Dynamics' global brand director Karl Stewart, about the studio's new three team structure: the "pillar" team was hard at work on the new Tomb Raider reboot, one of the highlights of this year's E3; the experimental team was working on smaller games under the "Lara Croft" banner; and the brand team, which looks after the lucrative Tomb Raider brand and, ostensibly, oversees projects like the upcoming movie.
At that time, Stewart told us, "The experimental team is basically just looking at the IP going forward and how we can take Lara to new and exciting places." The first and, as it turns out likely the last, place they took her was last year's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, an excellent isometric downloadable co-op game. So is Crystal Dynamics still looking to take Lara to new and exciting places? Outside of the reboot, it sounds like the answer to that question is in the negative.
"We're not making a second one," Stewart told me.
"Not yet, or just not?" I asked.
"Oh no, we're not making a second Lara. For us, that Lara Croft was, in a way, it was sort of the furthest possible extension of that iteration of Lara. Once we finished Guardian of Light, obviously we knew we were making this version of Tomb Raider," Stewart told us, referring to the reboot they were showing off during our interview.
Stewart was clear that the game performed well financially. "In business terms, it was very successful," he told me. What was less successful was the implementation of its online co-op feature. "In terms of issues, the one issue that plagued us all the way through, which looking back we would've changed our minds to do other things, was definitely the online," Stewart lamented. "I wish if we had the ability and had the information, we could've been a bit more transparent."
While the studio isn't pursuing the experimental Lara Croft series, it does recognize it as a successful "creative side endeavor" for the studio. In fact, Stewart told us that Daniel Neuberger, game director on Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, is now the game director of the new Tomb Raider.
[Update 6/12 6:20pm: Stewart reached out to Joystiq to say clarify that CrystalD isn't "'Currently' working on a new version of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light in the near future" and to note that he "didn't use the word 'Never.'" He adds, "We don't currently have plans on the table, but it was an exciting project and you just never know." We've asked Stewart to clarify whether or not the "experimental team" is still in operation in the above-mentioned three group structure.]

@Papa Neorev Exactly the same situation here. So many games have online multi-player but fewer are designed to be as good in an offline multiplayer and even fewer for coop.
We had a ton of fun.

good. Guardian of Light was terrible and it felt like Lara was just dropped into it at the last minute. If it means more games like that upcoming one of theirs - then that's an even bigger GOOD.

The core experience itself was fine, but just like the CD person says in the article, the whole way they handled releasing co-op was complete garbage, not to mention the co-op itself when it finally was released turned out to be garbage. CD lost a customer after that fiasco.

So - it was critically acclaimed AND profitable. What exactly does a game have to do these days to warrant a sequel then? Truth be told I would rather see entirely new concepts, but Guardian of Light was excellent and honestly revived the otherwise stagnant Tomb Raider experience for me. The new one (unimaginative title and all) seems set on doing the same. When I saw the presentation, I thought Tomb Raider survival horror - and I rather like that idea.

I honestly cant think of anything beyond "market like crazy" to make #6 true. This is one of the stupidest things ever to come out of a company spokesperons's food hole.

That's too bad. That was just about the best $15 I have spent on an XBLA game next to Shadow Complex. Plus, it's one of the best co-op experiences that my brother-in-law and I have played in awhile. When we finished the game we both said that there needs to be another one.

If the game performed well financially and they know now about things like online and such that they didnt before it just doesnt make sense that they would totally shut down the idea of a sequel.
I understand being focused on the next big installment of the TR franchise but it almost seems fishy that they would just close off the idea of a sequel.

Okay, are some people in the industry just that disconnected from actual gamers? LC:GoL was simply a terrific game, and brought in tons of people who had no interest in Tomb Raider into the franchise, me being one of them.

Guardians of light was the first time I liked Tomb raider since the second one. If they don't make a sequel wish they'd make use of another character with the gameplay type. I bought all those DLC character packs for it.

I think I can sort of understand why they would do this. Having 2 separate story-lines going at the same time for 1 character creates a bit of a disconnect and can sometimes confuse/alienate players. Or even having the story set up across different platforms(looking at you Kingdom Hearts >.>) including the difference between downloadable and physical disc. Not saying I wouldn't like to have another, but it just sorta makes sense.

Who knows? Maybe they'll make another GoL style game, only without Lara as the lead. Kain and Raziel? Gex? What other IPs do they have that they could use? They already put a ton of effort towards perfecting that style of game. I seriously doubt they're abandoning it, completely,

It was the only Laura Croft game I've ever liked, and one of my absolute favorite games. Perhaps this reboot will bring the same level of quality and fun.

They missed a great opportunity to finally shed the Tomb Raider title and call the New game "Lara Croft", which would have made more sense since it's focused more on her as a character than it is her boob size, but they just had to give that name away to a one off online game that they'll never continue... that's sad. Even if the new game is "better" it'll still have that stupid name that makes it feel out of place if she does anything other than tomb raiding.

GotL was great fun for me as a gamer but also accessible enough that my wife could play it with me. We had a blast going through it together.
It really is my favorite XBLA or PSN game by a huge margin. In fact, the other day we were playing through the Dungeon Siege 3 demo and we really enjoyed that as well. But then I got to thinking, why is this game a $60 retail release and GotL was a $15 XBLA game? DS3 really just felt like a fun but still crappier version of GotL, and that's not a knock on DS3 so much as it is a testament to GotL.
Not only was GotL the best arcade game I've played this gen, it was better than most retail games. I really wish they were making a sequel. It was profitable and everyone seemed to love it. I don't know why that's something that wouldn't be pursued further.

When Tomb Raider first came out, I was under the impression that her name in the games title, you know Lara Crofts tomb raider, it seemed like it was an idea to make her a video game character that could be in other games, like Mario, but not Mario. Anyways I always had thought thats what she was but it never happened till this game, though not a stretch but this game was damn fun. They coulda down a reboot of tomb raider staring some other chick like Lara but not her since shes off uh doing the GoL thing.
I dont know, I just liked the co op in this game, I hope they at least revisit the game and maybe make a more spiritual sequel or something.

I think this is a stupid move not to try another. They admitted it was very successful and so what if the co op didn't go well? Sure when I first heard about the game, the co op is what intrigued me and I did get a little bummed the feature wasn't going to be there immediately when I first purchased the game. You know what though? I played GoL anyway ALONE and it was a blast on its own. Maybe it was just meant to be played solo and the AI never gave me heartache because I was still in complete control and everything was responsive. Whatever mistakes happened in game was my own fault.

In a reboot, you tell the fans of Tomb Raider that everything they've played before is to be erased and here is the new Lara Croft and all that she's about. If you know any Lara Croft backstory, then just erase that from your mind.
If it's a prequel, you tell fans that this is how Lara became the Tomb Raider, a sort of untold story of her past, but it will fit in with the continuity of the series.
In the event this is a prequel, this could potentially be a jumping off point for new gamers to enjoy this new Tomb Raider game, and then play the rest of the series. However, since this is a reboot, you're almost saying don't bother playing the other Tomb Raider games.

@Axcalibur Because the old TRs have a lot of baggage associated with them, good and bad. The franchise has stagnated, and many people dismiss it. Why would they want to stay associated with a continuity that no one outside of hardcore fans care about? This is their chance to remake things from the ground up and create a vision for TR that's their own and not something inherited from a studio that nearly ran the franchise into the ground.

Shame. Guardian of Light was the best TombRaider game I played since the PS1. Unlike other tomb-based treasure-grabbing games, these puzzles seemed like proper puzzles, not just 'Jump to platform, pull lever, go through opened gate'.
