Here's to hoping they changed up the songs that play in the background of each menu and game.

I really hated those songs.

@bullmunky4 And that's why I'll stream music from my computer while playing. Yes, Foo Fighters isn't exactly "Magic-material", but if it's better than the actual music, I'm not going to argue.

...well, what I want is full deck building... guess I'll have to wait for part 3.

The new game modes does sound nice though.

Yes there is a way. Go here: http://www.magicworkstation.com/
Note that this is not a game, but an application to display the cards. Meaning that the players must follow etiquette. There is nothing stopping you from drawing your ENTIRE deck on Turn 1, Hell there aren't even turns.

Alternately, you could play the 1997 version of Duels of the Planeswalkers - not as pretty, but allows full deck customization.

@Xoonaka Magic Online is just that. Insane amount of cards and there's some really cool deck building tools. There's modes that limit which cards you can use, but there's also modes that allow you to use even the very old cards and create silly combos.

The only problem is that it's so expensive to be competitive at it, just like in the real MTG.

I've spent too much money on it, but I believe 50% of the fun in MTG comes from planning, building and optimizing your deck. It's great to figure out crazy synergies between cards and try them.

Duels is just a bunch of dull, pre-made decks.

MTG: Online is just as expensive (if not moreso) then the live game, so I'd like to avoid that.

I thought that Workstation app had been shut down hard by Wizard lawyers? Regardless, I'd prefer a nice polished product.

It's a little silly, but I'd love to play a game with a progression of unlocking cards and slowing gaining the ability to craft better decks... akin to Culdecept Saga. That's a fun experience for me, and having AI to play against is a huge plus.

1997 version though? That sounds like it'd be a winner. Although I hope it has all the cards I love... I don't remember when some of my favorites came out. But it might have Ice Age!

From this review, the deck customization sounds exactly like the "deck customization" available in the first game. We unlock cards for the deck, and then get to customize it by deciding whether or not to use those unlocked cards.

Is that the same system in play here? Or is it something different than it's been made to sound?

In the first game, though, you couldn't customize any of the original cards. In 2012, you can mess with everything save for the lands.

Hope that helps!

Deck creation isn't the point of this game, this game is intended to have 'focused' decks where emphasis is placed on strategy over how many B.S. cards you can load into a single deck.

did you ever actually play the original card game? a lot of strategy goes into planning a deck; it's not just about throwing in powerful cards.

In the first game, Two-Headed Giant could only be played on TWO consoles. You had to have two controllers on a side on one console. What I really wanted to do was team up with a friend on a different console and match up with other people. Is that in this version of the game?

Because there's no incentive to include that in the game; they already have M:TG Online. The point of DotP is that the decks are (in theory/hopefully) balanced; the trade-off being that you can't free build. If you want to build a deck you're going to have to shell out some cash to WotC.

I understand that to deliver a challenging gameplay experience etc, to keep things somewhat balanced in multiplayer etc, you can't just give people access to everything and let them do whatever they want... THAT'S WHY YOU PUT IN A FREE-PLAY \ SANDBOX MODE! You can keep the other game modes limited to what makes sense for them, but surely what MTG fans really want is just a comprehensive digital representation of the game that is flexible enough to experiment when you're not laddering online or whatever.

I bought the first in the hope that it was a pretty flexible MTG game that let me build decks and try things out. Arbitrary limitations? Paid DLC unlocks? Sorry, not interested. I hate tightly controlled digital experiences. Computers are powerful. The digital realm is one of freedom. You can write a program to do anything you can imagine. If I'm going to play MTG on a computer I want to use that digital flexibility.

Release the Chessmaster 9000 of MTG and I'll buy it... but sorry, I'm not going to keep buying arbitrarily limited yearly iterations of this thing just so they can dangle DLC under my nose in an attempt to take advantage of my desire for a complete MTG game.

Isn't playing a TCG exactly like playing a game with a constant stream of tiny DLC packs?

I guess the difference is that you have to buy multiple booster packs until you get the DLC you want.

@Acosta02 The difference is that in one you get physical cards that have an actual value as opposed to digital ones that mean nothing to anyone and can't be traded in any way. And occasionally you even get lucky and get that one card that's worth more than everything you've ever spent on the game.

@Acosta02 Sure. It makes sense to buy cards though when you're playing a physical game. In the digital world though.. all this stuff is already in the game, you're just paying for some 0 to be changed to a 1 so that the game gives you access to it. I'll never get behind that. Paying extra for content that should have been in a game is bad enough (Day 1 DLC), but paying for content that already IS in a game... Screw it. If I get desperate for a MTG game I'd rather code a bare-bones but flexible equivalent in my spare time than submit to spending money on nothing.

Of course, and I didn't buy them. All I'm saying... What I would like is a MTG game which lets me do what I want. For instance, create a custom game in which I have certain cards, playing against an AI with certain cards. So if you'd played a game IRL and lost, you could recreate that game, or even a specific point in that game, and play it out again trying different things. And so on. It would be easy to implement that functionality.

Unfortunately, this is not that game, so I won't be buying it either. All the while deck unlocks are offered as DLC they are clearly not looking to offer that kind of freedom to players. I don't see why there couldn't be a single-player only 'freeform mode' though, and leave the unlocks and DLC for the non-freeform modes and multiplayer.

Sorry, but WotC isn't going to give people a game which makes their entire lucrative card game obsolete for ten bucks.

Either try Magic Online (expensive as hell), or there are a bunch of free internet Magic programs (such as the one that guy was spamming, Magic Workstation) and some of them offer limited AI. Use that for theorycrafting.

What you are looking for is another product that already exists. It's Magic Online. DotP is not meant to take it's place. DotP is meant to be a casual & balanced "Magic experience" that both new players & experienced players can pick up & quickly/easily get into and play. You can have all the creative control your heat desires, it's just in the form of a different program.

@swooded Cheers. I realized that after reading some comments here and have looked into it. It's interesting that so many people here want deck building from these games though, and even expected it from the first one (as I assumptively did, too). It's a big part of the card game so it felt like a gaping hole in these duels games, but it makes a lot more sense in light of the existence of Magic Online.

@waterhand The currently available "Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers" seems a decent way to learn the game. I bought it having only played a few games with a friend some 10+ years ago.. I barely remembered anything, have never owned a deck etc (hardly a "Magic nerd", samjenkins), but within a short time of booting up the game I had all the basics down and was beating AI opponents and unlocking cards.

I did have a good time with it, too. Put some 15 hours into it. It's very limited, though, and all the DLC etc has rather turned me off as it seems to indicate that there will never be the flexibility and deck building etc that I would like to see.

Either or I would say. If you want to play multiplayer get this one, as I would bet that the first one is going to lose a lot of players.

Regardless, you don't need to play one or the other first.

Not really. He doesn't care about a MTG game and therefore doesn't care about what people who are interested in one want out of it... and then expects them to "get over it" and care as little as he does. AND he does it while making a crass and insulting generalization about them. No, sorry. That's a shitty comment if I ever did see one.

There's nothing wrong with people determining if a product is worthwhile purchasing based on whether or not it has the features they are looking for.

I bought it last night and so did a lot of ppl on my friends list. Everyone liked the new version with the new cards and decks.

I hope DLC (more decks/cards) come out for this soon. It just feels weird only having 7 decks (i thinks its 7) to choose from.

Just wonder when the first expansion will come out. Cuz i need more deck choices

There are 10 different ones I think. In comparison the first one only had 8 pre-DLC.

It'd be cool if the new DLCs included more than 3 decks too (maybe 4), but I don't see that happening.

Ok, I'll take back SOME of the attitude I've displayed ( :p ), after having a look at M:TG Online, seeing it mentioned in comments here. I hadn't realized there was such a thing. Yet to have a deeper look. Cheers to those who mentioned it.

I'd still love a Planeswalkers style game with A.I. etc that is more customizable, though... And on an unrelated note I'm a little surprised to see a comment calling people nerds on a gaming site getting up-voted.

@edit exactly. This is IMO just a game for WotC to get people to their "real" game. They are not ever going to allow deck customization because its of no financial benefit to them. This is a casual game, and honestly it should stay that way.
