This game is good, but, like most of Suda 51's games, I wish the gameplay was better. Even working with Shinji Mikawhatever Resident Evil 4 Guy didn't help much. But it's definitley worth playing

This and Alice Madness Returns are my two favorite games of 2011 so far. It's a shame EA didn't do diddly to market them. 'Partners' seems like a loose term.

The game's been surprising people with high reviews.

EA only likes to market games without established fanbases...like dead space, mass effect, and battlefield.

This and Dungeon Siege 3 came out of nowhere for me!

"Johnson is a floating, disembodied demon skull with a lusty outlook on life [...] Knowledgeable about the ins and outs of Hell, Johnson also acts as a tour guide of sorts, offering color commentary and helpful underworld information."

Sounds a lot like Morte from the RPG classic Planescape: Torment. Coincidence?

Completely agree. As I was reading this I had to double check who wrote the review because I wanted to say what a great job (Jeremy) they did, but you already mentioned it, so I'll just latch on to your comment and give kudos as well.

Because DNF left off the "kind of wonderful" part and replaced it with "kind of embarrassing for everyone involved."

What's great is that Punisher M1911's comment is probably a hands-down, more betterer illustration of what all the reviews were trying to say in regards to humor in DNF and the lousy character of it.

You are kinda proving the point about DNF being immature crap. There are proper methods for being mature in your content and there are immature methods, like those you are employing here.

@Seasqwaa Weeell, based on the review it does sorta seem like it's just a tad trapped in the past, only it's the past circa RE4 gameplay-wise and the past circa From Dusk 'Till Dawn sensibility-wise. Which I can totally get behind, if you know what I'm saying (I'm saying that I think the game sounds entertaining).

@Mutagenaric

So because the creator of Resident Evil is involved it's automatically like RE4? So what about Gears of War? Is that like RE4? Dead Space? Just because a control scheme similar to a game is used doesn't mean the games are similar.

Now if the protagonist had a sweet haircut and was trying desperately to rescue someone that was kidnapped... wait.

I never played God Hand but RE4 is one of my favorites. This looks way more Suda than Shinji tho, which means I'll probably play it... but I can wait until it hits the $15-$20 price tier.

@baby sea tuna - I was hoping it would be NMH meets Vanquish, because those were two of my favourite games from last year. If anything, though, this doesn't sound Suda ENOUGH for me. His puerile stuff has always kind of served a satiric purpose, whereas here, it kind of just sounds like a celebration of puerility. Which is unfortunate.

Note: if you're not the kind of person who considers Killer7, Flower, Sun, and Rain or Contact as some of your favourite games of all time, you can disregard the above.

Thank goodness the game came out good. I had high hopes for it, considering all the superstar Japanese talent involved, not to mention they weren't shackled by Japanese gaming standards to make it(Japan is KILLING its industry and burying its creators). I'm dying to see Keiji Inafune make the jump across the pond and make some games with American support, too.

But no mention of the soundtrack? Akira Yamaoka made it, so it MUST be good, right?

I wanted to mention Yamaoka but it didn't really flow with the rest of the review. Long story short, the loading screens have better music than some entire games. I'm actually using one of the tracks as my ringtone now.

So I'm just curious. In DNF the immaturity and the profanity were a negative, but here they are a positive, please explain.

Also, in DNF the old style "dumb" gameplay was also highlighted as a negative, while here the "tired and true" gameplay was at worst disregarded as something you can overlook. What's up with that?

Mind you, I'm not defending DNF, and taken together, DNF could surely be a worse game. However, there seems to be somewhat of a double standard going on here.

Not all crude humor is the same. Would you call the South Park movie and the Scary Movie series the same thing?

Having played neither games, the problem I've noted with DNF is context. The way the humor comes off in DNF is hateful, narcissistic, and misogynistic. Not just that, but it's also lazy writing. Spouting dated references and catch phrases is nothing. When Duke isn't quoting ten yer old+ catch phrases (sometimes incorrectly), he's usually berating somebody in the most simplistic thoughtless manner.

From what I've seen in this game, Garcia only seems to berate demons, and isn't making any sweeping vague insults that cover an entire lifestyle or gender. He's out to save the girl, assumingly for reasons beyond sex. Yes there are childish puns related to body parts in the game, some even eye-rolling; but none seem to offend on a level of bigotry.

SoTD seems to be grade school humor, while DNF is truck stop redneck humor.

I assume this is because RE4 is still less than a decade old, while DNF is still stuck in the Quake era in many ways. At worst, SoTD gameplay feels stale and predictable to someone who has played every Gears, RE, and Dead Space game in the last 5 years. The next level of 3rd person action shooter has not arrived yet. DNF, on the other hand, has been left in the dust ages ago.

I've read multiple reviews, heard podcast discussion, and seen game footage. I also prefaced what I said with "from what I've read (or seen)"

Would you like to share any information about the game that disproves any of what was in my post?
