If anyone can do something awesome with this incredibly strange new Nintendo device, it's probably Valve.

I've been leaning against getting a Wii 2, but depending on what Valve does, I might have to re-evaluate that stance.

Just curious...

Was I down-voted because I wasn't planning on immediately throwing my money at Nintendo?
Or was it because seeing Valve interested made me re-evaluate my thought process?

Probably a little of both. I read it as "Pfft, Nintendo won't get a cent of my money, because they're Nintendo. Who cares if its 2 - 3 times more powerful than the Ps3, and they've got a shitload of excellent devs on board, no way, the word Nintendo conjures up imagines of shitty console specs and casual gam.........OH WAIT ITS VALVE"

Shouldn't your judgement on the purchase of an entire console, worth i would estimate US$349-$399, be based on a little more than 1 developer?

Ah, I see... and actually it's not that at all. I've owned every home console Nintendo's put out since the NES, and bought the GC and Wii on launch day. More than anything I'm a fanboy of Nintendo and have defended against the "casual gamer" gripe to anyone who mentioned it to me. But I just wasn't so impressed with the E3 press conference to think that it was something I had to have as soon as it came out.

To answer your question, I judge the worth of a console on the games themselves and whether they look like they would be fun to play. Not the 'power' of the console. Many of the developers you mention didn't have any Wii U demo footage to show, which was one of my concerns. Another was that there wasn't even a mention of a price range for the console. I hope you're right that it's under $400, but I really have no idea on what it will end up being.

However, since a 3rd party developer that publicly bashed the Wii multiple times being positive about the Wii U makes me think maybe they're seeing something I'm not, which is entirely possible since we've seen very little of the Wii U. Which leads to me re-examining my thought process. It wasn't that it was Valve specifically, just that it was a well respected developer having a different attitude towards the next version of the console.

I don't see why.
30 million people bought a Nintendo 64 pretty much just to play games from Nintendo and Rare.

Give it time, eventually Nintendo will do something he doesn't like and he'll flop and say it's a "disaster" or needs a "do-over".

Don't get me wrong. I respect the work Valve has done, but he is not the second coming and I don't hang on his every opinion. Valve as the highest known potential to do something with the platform, but I've got to see it first. My developers claimed what they could do with the Wii and nothing significant was realized. Either way, much luck to Valve.

One developer making promises dosent exactly fill one with hope, even if they make good on it there's still a whole industry to convince.

There was a time when developers loved the PSP too you know.

Just wondering ... What are you talking about now? WiiU will be like 6-7 years after the PS360's released. It goes without saying that its expected it to be capable of more from a visual fidelity standpoint. However, at this point we don't know how much more.

Nintendo should make Steam the WiiU's online experience. Port the whole thing over and have everything from friends lists, online shopping, downloads, matchmaking, trophies / achievements to updates (etc) running Steam. That way Nintendo can focus on making games ... not trying to build a network infrastructure with modern online functionality.

The thing that get's me is that he seems to be liking the system because of it's increased power but we're still over a year away from launch and by then there will most likely be new MS and Sony systems right on it's heels with even more power.

I'm with You nintendo needs to stick to making games. If they turned this into a PC hardware that was supported by steam as an infrastructure I would make it my only console.

The problem is they would be giving total control of their platform to a 3rd party. I think it'd be a brilliant move but knowing how egomaniacal these companies are in general and how these online systems are a massive chunk of revenue I just can't see them doing it. They'd be giving control and undoubtedly massive profit sharing when they figure they can just do it themselves. I think Sony should expand on steam integration that was introduced with Portal 2.

Here's hoping Nintendo can keep adding some 3rd party support, and nothing is bigger to me than Valve.

I could totally see in some Portal iteration Glados on the Wii U smaller controller making fun of you!

most likely a port of Portal 2 with a GLADoS feed will be all they bother to do game wise, maybe the ability to target with your finger on the touch screen but really who wants to do that?

This is a much better gimmick than motion controls. There's lots of totally obvious things that devs can do with an auxilary touchscreen in the controller that makes the game better.

Been saying this since I saw it. Devs will actually WANT to use this controller to add to their games instead of being shoehorned in somewhere. Motion and waggle was never my thing. I bought my Wii strictly for Nintendo games and not the waggle feature. I don't own a Kinect or PS move controllers. If that's your thing I can totally understand it though.

It's a HD DSi, You're not going to see anything different than what they're already doing with that. Oh hey here are some extra button on your touch screen, Oh a second screen for your inventory. When it gets right down to the nitty gritty the number of developers that are actually going to spend the money to do anything more than port 360 code and graphics over to it you can probably count on one hand. Reality is going to set in quick and sink any real ambitions for doing anything particularly different.

So VALVe games with the near-precision of a mouse... on consoles...

This is quite interesting. Not exciting, since I already have a great gaming PC, but interesting.

I wish that one of the manufacturers put out a decent game updating system similar to Steam. It's so nice to have updates pulled down in the background, rather than having to launch the game or pay to subscribe to a service. If Nintendo want to break ground with the Wii U and online features this would be a great egg to crack - background downloads with no update limits.

Personally I have no problem with either PC or consoles. I respect that PC's have better potential for graphics and processing capabilities; you'd have to be blind, deaf and dumb to think otherwise. They also have the widest selection of controller options. On my gaming PC I have Xbox controllers, a good keyboard and better mouse, midi equipment, graphics tablets, bluetooth mini joypads. All usable for games.
But consoles are great too because, though not exclusively, they're generally in more comfortable environments than a typical PC, much easier to use/less fuss and cheaper.

I'm elitist only to those who say one side is definitely better than the other. Which looks like you 2.

actually if you want to see how well a console will do, dont listen to anyone but yourself. Wait for the thing to actually BE BUILT, see what developers put on it and don't buy out of pure anticipation like a sheep. Developers are really good at promises but their ability to deliver should always be judged case by case.
