FThreeAR (Fuh-Three-Are). Go on! Do a public service and only refer to the game by its actual name to your friends and family.

You can do the same with 5ive and Scre4m.

What a shame...I was really looking forward to playing it this weekend and getting some good stuff in...the school in FEAR 2 had some good moments in it. I might just rent this now.

@sammo21 Yeah, I too was anticipating this game but when I heard they changed the game developer i kind of felt that it was not going to be as good as the previous iterations. Monolith produced great games in the past and i hope it will continue doing that. But this was developed by Day 1 Studios (developers of Fracture) which sucked big time and looked like it was a budget game. I don't even know why i even bothered and beat that game.

I'd recommend anyone who likes FPS games to play the first FEAR because to me at least it still has some of the best enemy AI I've seen in a game.

"those scares never come. For better and for worse, the franchise's latest outing has eschewed the horror classification in favor of a more action-packed, score-centric experience."

That makes me reluctant.

"Alma will randomly show up during a wave, hurling any player who looks at her for too long to the opposite end of the map, separating them from the relative safety of their allies and stronghold."

That's a pretty cool idea. A nice tweak to the horde-like game modes out there.

while pretty much almost none of the horror elements are nip to non-existed its still a pretty fun game epically in coop and Fu*king Run.

They've been doing that a lot lately. The text sounds liked a mixed bag, and then it'll end up with a better scored than it would have seemed.

GameFly amazingly sent me this on release day, so I've been playing it. The review is right about the less scares, but the action is fantastic. There's a hell of a lot more story now with cutscenes since Paxton is sort of "haunting" point man and leading him to his destination with "mother".

I think the feeling of not being alone is what brings down the fright factor, it used to be just a voice on the headset and a faceless protagonist, but now he speaks(rarely) and is constantly bothered by his brother. So that no longer are you heading down that bloodsoaked hallway by yourself.

Overall though, I am liking this more than 2 I think. Although I have yet to be raped in this one......so far.

It's kind of funny how alot of people in this comments section (including myself), have never played any of the FEAR games. The first game was rather popular on the PC, but seemingly underadvertised for the consoles.

I picked up 1 and 2 cheap, but never played them yet (2 I picked up on a black friday sale a year or two ago).

I played through the first game and wasn't overly impressed. Seemed like the bulk of the game was warehouses, offices, and building maintence areas. I tried the FEAR files or whatever that expansion was called and it the same thing. Just got bored with it. Never bothered with the second game.

Noooo kidding. If you didn't like 2, then you will hate 3. Now in 3 the only melee you can do is knife. oh and the "Supa-dupa" combat slide. No more roundhouse kicks or jump kicks. Come to think of it, FEAR3 kind of has a Condemned 2 vibe going on with some Black Ops.

I might Gamefly this after I finish Donkey Kong Country Returns. Yup, dusted off the Wii. Finished Mario Galaxy 1 finally after having it since release and currently playing SMG2 and DKCR.

IGN gave this pretty good reviews as well so Ill probably Q it up.

This game may be a blast to play when in action; but it's entire presentation is just... No offense to anyone who likes it. Free to like what you like, and all, but I'm gonna rant a bit with the free time I have...

I think this is probably the dumbest videogame franchises around today. Firstly, SWAT/special forces and "scary" stuff just do not go together. I usually love mixing genres, but having The Ring girl show up in the middle of your countrerstrike game is more silly and perplexing than horrifying. You can't create a supernatural horror atmosphere with lots of padded armor and a high powered sniper rifle. When the GI Joes start showing up in Condemned 2, that game went off the rails too. I don't know what Monolith's fascination is with this stuff in horror.

Whoever they got to advertise this game pretends that characters like "The Point Man" and "Paxton Fettel" (really?) have Mario sized recognition. I mean... I understand playing to your fanbase, but watching trailers for this game was like watching a Mexican soap opera. It's trying to be detailed and dramatic, but to me was a big hilarious mess. Watch the Uncharted 2 and 3 trailer for a good balance of fan service and introduction to newcomers.

Not trying to pick a fight or anything. Every time I see this game, the only thing that comes to mind is "Really? There have been three of these?"

Thanks, I didn't have to try and think of a dumber franchise because you already said it. Uncharted is the "dumbest" videogame franchise. While I appreciate a video game attempting to be an interactive movie, I have to say, Uncharted brings on a whole cast of lame characters and one long, dull story. "Cough" Tomb Raider. So i'd have to say that those franchises are in the same boat. But I guess at least Uncharted didn't change it's play style to be similar to Call of Duty. (FEAR 3!!!!) Don't get me wrong though, I "liked" playing all these games and Im not a fan, but when you say that FEAR is the "dumbest" hell no, there's worse out. They should have stopped at the first FEAR. That's the only one I actually enjoyed. I guess Uncharted 2 was better than one, I just can't stand the lame ass stories. Anyway, like you said, it's all preference.

I guess, I didn't realize FEAR 1 was anything other than just creepy. People really got scared by FEAR 1? Let me clarify, I loved FEAR 1, but I didn't get scared. I mean the entire game you've got super powerful near future, fully automatic, weapons. And Alma can literally never hurt you in the game except for 2 places. So, while I found the game fun, exciting, and creepy. Definitely didn't find it scary.

I'm losing faith in your reviews Joystiq. I understand that the game is better than some typical FPS cash-ins, but this game as a game of the F.E.A.R series is an atrocity. It's nothing like the other games other than the bland character placement, and the slow motion. The game has none of the original appeal, BARELY follows any semblance of the original stories, and is missing the entirety of the horror part of the series. Unfortunately if this game was not branded as a F.E.A.R game then it probably would have deserved that score, but since it was branded I think you might have been over gracious.

This game kinda snuck up on me, knew it was coming out, but really didn't have that much of an interest in it. Never played the first, but did play and beat the 2nd, which I thought was pretty good if abeit slightly uninspired. But when I read more on the co-op (and splitscreen local, huzzah!) and it's other modes, I was really intriqued and picked it up on Amazon before the $20 promotional credit disappeared.

Needless to say, I really like this game. May not have the "fear" aspect to it with the scares (I have Dead Space for that), it still is a very enjoyable shooter with good atmosphere. And those multi modes are just great! Love Soul Survivor if only cause I love those type of infection modes where you are briefly teamed up with one team before you have to switch your alliance.
