When Nintendo announced that Smash Bros. was en route to its Wii U and 3DS systems, longtime fans of the fighting series may have, in elation, momentarily forgotten how much time elapses during the announcement and launch. As creative lead Masahiro Sakurai explains in his weekly Famitsu column (translated by 1UP), the next game is "several years" away from completion.
"It makes me cringe," he laments, referring to the two game projects being added to his plate. "And I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members." Apparently all of his studio's resources are currently being poured into Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS. "We've got no plans whatsoever -- we've got two new games out there in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all."
At least with these games, Sakurai knew ahead of time. With the Wii's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Nintendo head Satoru Iwata announced the game before Sakurai even knew it was a project he would be working on. "With previous projects I had a game design document in place before forming a team, but with this I don't have the time for that. I won't be able to look at every aspect of the game and balance out all the characters by myself this time," he writes.
Before the Wii U announcement Sakurai's studio, Project Sora, "had intended to make a 3DS Smash Bros.," but doubled up after seeing the Wii U. "If we went solely for the Wii U, the HD graphics would really bump up the visual effects, but then we'd be stuck in another arms race. If we made this game another extension over the previous one, we'd have to cut out the new things we could possibly do on the 3DS hardware and compete with ourselves again over the size of the character roster and the amount of gameplay we can put in it."
If your heart stops every time Iwata takes the stage at a press conference, just imagine how Mr. Sakurai reacts.

Pokémon Console RPG, that uses the same mechanics as the handheld main-series games.
Just give us Pokémon U & 3DS, with the same differences as the traditional 'Red & Blue' setup, have them cross compatible but still tailored to take advantage of their vastly different platforms. It would even give people more incentive to buy both versions, seeing as they could communicate between their 3DS and Wii U, playing on the road or at home. PLEASE!!!!!!

One that doesn't suck, you mean.
As in, I want a full recreation of the original Pokemon Red/Green, but on a console, with 3D graphics.

Well, if the Wii U comes out next Christmas then that means Smash Bros. comes out about a year to two years into its lifecycle, which isn't too bad, really. I just wish they would apply the same character roster to Mario Kart.

That is if you assume either game will be completed in 2 years. If it was one game then yes but since its two titles on different platforms it could be more than just the two years. You also need to understand that Nintendo developers don't have any track record with working on HD games. On WiiU you also have the touch screen which will undoubtedly be used ... they have to figure out how.
This statement makes me worried:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"With previous projects I had a game design document in place before forming a team, but with this I don't have the time for that. I won't be able to look at every aspect of the game and balance out all the characters by myself this time,"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It sounds like he is saying they are basically going to wing it and fly by the seat of their pants. It also sounds like he is saying they have to get it right from the start because there won't be meaningful internal beta tests to re-balance characters.
They should hit up Capcom for some assistance in tweaking the character roster and making the game balanced.

@ColorblindMonk First I think they announced their system much too early. Second the 3DS sales have not been anywhere near as good as the DS sales were. Then they keep rehashing the same series over and over, I grew up on Metroid for Gameboy and Zelda and Mario on SNES but times have changed. My little brother, 8 years old, who owns a Wii doesn't even know who Zelda or Samus is. It's almost as if they are still targeting my generation and I honestly feel that I've grown away from that stuff. Perhaps I'm the exception.
And I don't wish for Nintendo to fail or do badly, competition is what drives this market and what will drive Sony and MS to play harder (look at move and kinect for example, without the wii these devices would not exist at all.). I just feel that perhaps I'm not seeing their central vision with the Wii U.

@KaBob799 Well seeing as Super Smash Bros Melee was my only game for the GC for about 8 months, I can tell you that having this thing ready at or around launch can only be GOOD for the platform, if you think otherwise, shoot yourself over and over. Or have Nintendo shoot you over and over instead of themselves.
There's a meme in here somewhere I think.

Maybe I wouldn't buy a Nintendo console if there is no Mario, Zelda or Metroid.
Do you know why they announced and showed the console THIS early? Because they want third parties to be involved with the console from much earlier. Maybe this time Ubisoft will offer something better than what Red Steel was for Wii, because of time.

Considering how much fan service they throw into Smash Bros. and the fact that they no doubt want some form of interaction between the Wii U and 3DS (training perhaps?) this really is only good news.
i mean, it's get a glorified port of the Wii version or wait it out for another, hopefully, epic release.

It would only be good news if he said they were holding out development to make the game perfect. He basically said they are going to rush both games to get them to market as soon as possible. There is nothing good about his statement in terms of the quality of the final product.
This is actually depressing news.

Not really. All that comes off more as PR speak. Fans of the series are rabid and as long as they don't absolutely need a quick selling IP, relative care will be made with it.
That said, what else could you add to smash bros. besides a few more characters and another mode or two?
Not much.

@Mmmmz On the negative side the Wii U version will be dumbed down just so the 3DS can catch up. So he he's already saying they're not going to push the graphics or character roster for the Wii U so the two platforms will work together. Hopefully it won't be a glorified port of the Wii version but it's looking that way so far. Then again we have several years till release so who knows.

@Mmmmz You tow the company line. He's trying to tamp down expectations from the start. Anything that is said right now is to be taken as a grain of salt. Basically if everything he says happens, he can say I told you so, if not he can come out on top looking like a savior. Again, PR speak. It doesn't just come from PR persons.
I'm not saying it will be "epic" but at the same time I doubt everything he says will be accurate by the time it's released. It all depends on time and how the development goes and where the platforms are when the time comes.

Well, yeah that's how I meant it. I can see how mentioning PR speak would point otherwise.
I mean, yeah he's being honest but at the same time he's being honest to tamp down expectations. However, knowing his work, if he has time he will do more if he can. And that time depends on how long Nintendo feels it can wait it out which in turn depends on how the market is treating the two platforms and what other games are available.
If it needs a killer IP and none are closer, than definitely, this will be rushed and neutered.

I guess what I'm saying is no matter how it's defined I would never consider his comments about smash bros as PR speak. He gave specific and detailed info ... On his own no less. I actually think it's a disservice to call it PR speak. No soft peddling or back peddling. Just ... Honesty.
Pulled this off the web ...
http://prbreakfastclub.com/2011/03/22/defining-pr/
Here is how I would define PR: “The practice of safeguarding a client’s reputation. Public relations can also be the driving force behind obtaining positive and effective publicity for an event or product.”
I think it's kind of funny / ironic I'm actually backing the developer and what he said verbatim and you are kind of trying to spin it. Just seems backwards.

@Mmmmz I'm viewing the situation realistically from a viewpoint that may, or may not happen.
Actions speak louder than words and only the future will say where it ends up but I don't hang on anyone's words. Especially developers/publishers. I go by precedence and likelihood
Devs say a lot of things and not much of it ends up happening as planned. For better and for worse.
Smash Bros has rabid fans. They wouldn't really tolerate a half-assed game except maybe on the 3DS because they're lusting over one so badly. And Nintendo depends on those fans a little more for the series than their other games.
Again, it all depends on how pressed Nintendo feels during the game's final stages.
So let's just wait and see what happens, shall we? No point in splitting hairs on future predictions that we have absolutely no control over.

You are spinning again and you are actually taking his words out of context. First, go by his own pedigree and past performances rather than a generic look at the industry as a whole. The man has a sparkling reputation. Perhaps he will work even better with his feet to the fire. Just because he says there is a truncated schedule doesn't mean the game will be half assed. It should give some cause for concern and be worrisome but it feels to me that you are trying to spin what he's saying as to make it seem like he is just being a drama queen. In fact, what you have said is more in line with PR speak than what he was actually saying.
Give some relevant examples of this "precedence" you keep harping on. You make it sound like your interpretation is somehow more important / relevant than what the guy MAKING the game is saying.
It just looks like you are trying to make this out as a non issue ... This is the guy making the gaming going out of his way to talk about the upcoming process of developing these two titles simultaneously on two separate & new platforms.
In a weird way you are being both overly dismissive & extremely defensive. No one ever said the games would suck or be half baked so you don't need to try and explain away a position no one has taken.
Go off the facts not assumptions based on speculation.

I have no idea where you think I come off as overly defensive but whatever (truly since you seem hell bent on arguing over every little detail, existent or not. Uh oh, was that defensive? =O...Nah =P). Like I said, time will tell and you're taking a comment far too seriously. Not that I was joking but it's not like I'm reporting anything or writing an academic paper on a very simple opinion.
Are you one of those rabid fans I speak of?
Anyhow, I'm done having fun with you on this topic since, again, there's no argument to be had. It's all postulations. Perhaps you're in a debating mood but I have no interest in going in circles with you, even while we're giggling hysterically.
Meet me up on a more serious matter and we'll be sure to have a fun debate, should we not meet eye to eye on that future subject. And no, I'm no avoiding anything I just spent more time on this simple comment that I ever intended to and it doesn't matter to me. If I'm wrong nothing changes because it was just an opinion. If I'm right, in my original assertion, we all win.
