NintendoWare Weekly: Kirby's Dreamland, Final Fantasy III

One game each on two Virtual Consoles feels like a windfall, especially when both games are worth the time it takes to play them. The Wii's Virtual Console brings us Final Fantasy III, the SNES role-playing game that introduced us to Terra, Shadow, Kefka, and other beloved characters, while the 3DS Virtual Console brings Kirby's Dream Land, which introduced us to ... Kirby.

WiiWare

Big Town Shoot Out (Performance Designed Products, 1-4 players, 500 Wii Points): Wild-West themed arcade shooting.

Virtual Console

Final Fantasy III (SNES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This is the one that was released here as Final Fantasy III on SNES -- it was called Final Fantasy VI in Japan. It's the one with Espers and MagiTek and stuff.

3DS eShop

Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy) (Nintendo, 1 player, $3.99): The very first Kirby game features a lot of familiar elements, but not the "copy" ability yet. Basically, Kirby has an eating disorder.

DSiWare

Moto eXtreme (Chillingo, 1 player, $7.99/800 DSi Points): Do awesome bike stunts, and design tracks from which to do those stunts with the stylus.
The Lost Town - The Dust (Circle Entertainment, 1 player, $4.99/500 DSi Points): A military facility explodes in an isolated small town, and you must find survivors and protect them from mysterious creatures while you await rescue.
Boardwalk Ball Toss (Skyworks Interactive, 1 player, $1.99/200 DSi Points): Try to knock over pins. Hopefully this isn't as unfair as the real carnival game.
Hearts Spades Euchre (Cosmigo, 1-4 players, 500 DSi Points): Hearts, Spades, and Euchre.

Because it's the "virtual console, and FFIII is what that particular release of the game, on that console at that time, was called. End of story. You don't go around scribbling on old SNES carts, changing the III to a VI, do you?

Doesn't matter what it WAS called, it's what it IS. Which is Final Fantasy VI. Also, when you quote something, you generally have a finishing quote... You know... To show that you're ending said quote.

It's the Virtual Console - as in a virtual representation of what the console was. It was FFIII when it was on the SNES. End of discussion.

There are seriously hundreds of things more important to worry and argue about than a game title. It was FF III when the SNES cart was released, you'll only see the name FF III once each time you fire up the game to play, if once is too much then don't buy it.

Apparently the PSOne Classic version was released on the Japanese PSN store on 4/20/11. No notice/scheduled timeframe for release here in North America.

The version on PSN (In Japan only, I believe) is the PS1 Anthology version which is pretty much the same as SNES, but formally renamed to Final Fantasy VI.

This doesn't make up for Xenoblade, The Last Story or Pandora's Tower, but it'll do.

Take notes, young'ins... this is FINAL FANTASY back when the series was worth a damn, and released within a respectable time. Now go get pop-pop a Wii Points card so he can ignore you for 50+ hours of pure JRPG gaming bliss!

True, but all they would do is try to compare it to CoD or Halo, eventually figure out that it actually requires reading, get pissed off with it, and say the graphics suck.

Oh, if only the Wii VC could be downloaded on the 3DS. I would have such a large debt.

Oh look, it's the last good mainline (I haven't forgotten about you, Tactics) Final Fantasy game. My SNES is across the country so I guess I should buy this, just in case.

@gordeaux No, it isn't. I enjoy FFVI, sure, but having played FFVII and IX recently they're both better, FFX is also better from memory and FFXII is utterly fantastic once you get in the groove. Admittedly, I didn't like FFVIII as much and FFXIII was a bit of a mess, but to say FFVI is the last good mainline FF game is just being inaccurate at best.

Oh right, sprite is right! Polygons are polywrong! Blah blah old school BS.

Again I say to square I don't care where is my FFT for iOS / iPad

It would be *highly* welcomed... FFT was my fav' of the entire series too. The only thing that worries me is the possible price ... the other FF games, including the first one are $9 and up($16 for FFIII(not VI)? j00 crazy, Squ'enix!).

YEEEEESS, I was just humming the KDL second world music last week, and I realized that it might come to eShop. Its like Nintendo read my brain. Oh, and FF3, I guess.

I remember first playing Kirby's Dreamland, reading in the instructions that you could swallow things by pressing down, and I thought "forefeit a long-range projectile? what's the bloody point of that?" Then next game they gave it a bloody point and it became the main focus of the series.

Good times.

The meh is strong again this week. *sticks to Ocarina Of Time, Super Mario Land and Dr Mario Express*

Beh, I have it for GBA (damn you, GameStop!), so I'll go with that. THen again, I'm a stickler for "new translation, gaiz!", especially on RPGs.

You know, when this game was released on PS1 in english a long time ago, it removed this "III" Bullshit.

Besides, there´s FFIII on nintendo DS already, the REAL III

@Koming it's a direct port of the SNES version, not really a new edition or anything, so I think they can keep the numbering the way it originally appeared in the states.

@Koming Annoying as it may be, VC is archival releases. They are pretty much untouched from their original release. Which is a shame, since FFVI is not only the real title, but has a nicer title screen.

I don't own a Wii anymore, but I may buy another for FFVI...

Maybe I should sell my DVD player cause there aren't any movies coming out that I want.

The eshop is a joke still, I bought a 3DS so far for 1 game. And that game is Zelda OOT, and game from years ago. Do new games that get released to the DSi store automatically become available on the eshop? I would assume no. Seriously Nintendo has no idea still how to maximize their online experience.
