Since this is the internet, most of you are probably aware that Japan produces a lot of games for genres that don't necessarily exist in other parts of the world. These games can get a little ridiculous at times, sure, but Aksys believes that the "otome" sub-genre of JRPGs is worth bringing to the western hemisphere.
Idea Factory's historical RPG Hakuoki: Demon Of The Fleeting Blossom will be North America's first widely available "otome." The game follows the story of Chizuru Yukimura, who encounters the Shinsengumi samurai clan while traveling through Edo-period Japan on a quest to find her missing father. As luck would have it, the Shinsengumi are also searching for her father, and together they to travel to the city of Hakuoki, which contains "supernatural secrets." (Read: ghosts or something.)
So, sounds like a JRPG, right? Why does this game land in the otome sub-genre, while others don't? Put simply, the "otome" (or "maiden") game is a romance novel for you PSP. In order to be considered an otome, a game must A) have a female protagonist, and B) also make obtaining the affections of a love interest as important as other main story goals. Unlike male-targeted dating sims, otome games contain little to no sexuality, as they are generally intended for female gamers in the pre-teen/tween/teenage demographic.
Aksys plans on bringing big-haired samurai lovin' to any PSP owner interested in that sort of thing sometime during the first quarter of 2012. Who knows, maybe this will finally pave the way for that When Harry Met Sally game we've always wanted from Telltale.
Aksys bringing 'otome' genre stateside with Hakuoki: Demon Of The Fleeting Blossom

Hmm, sounds interesting. Even though I'm not a girl, I'd think about getting this.

Dating games like this don't contain much sexuality because Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo don't allow it on their systems. The PC versions of these types of games usually contain stronger content like homosexual anal rape scenes or other violence but very few have been released in the west.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzai:_Falsely_Accused is one of the few that's been translated.
Boy Love/yaoi/otome stuff is very homo-erotic and it's very popular among Japanese girls but I really don't think theres a market for it on the PSP in the west.

There is a huge western BL/yaoi fanbase. *puts on Elder Fangirl hat* I remember when it was impossible to get any of that stuff over here translated (and in the few cases where it was, it was either a big deal or genders were switched where character designs made it possible present it as heterosexual romance). Now a comparative ton of BL manga and anime have gotten released stateside, because companies started to realize how many female fans were willing to spend money on it.

I dunno...according to my elder brother, he didn't know the anime was targetted torwards girls until he saw the wikipedia. I suppose the romance in a bit more mature and not "doki doki kawaii desu ne" creepo shoujo style.
The anime has been translated by fans and is widely posted around the internet. If you're interested, just google "hakuouki shinsegumi kitan english sub episode 1". Definetly worth it if not for the historical value but for the great story and animation.

Boonga Boonga is not Japanese, it's Korean. Why we still need to point this out ten years later, I'll never know. You even link to the Wikipedia article where it says it's Korean in the first sentence.

I was actually excited when I read "Samurai clan" , "Edo-period Japan" and "supernatural" ... but it all went to hell when i got to the romance part.
Still, I wish Aksys luck in their venture. It's a bold move to bring a game of that genre to the west.

There's like hardly any real romance in this. It's all military manly romance.

I have a feeling that it is going to be voice acting that will stand in the way of success for these types of titles outside Japan. All of these recent titles are full voice.
Japan has a strong voice acting industry, with a lot of very skilled voice actors and actresses. If any of the dubs and game voice overs I have had the misfortune to encounter are anything to go by, there are maybe 2 good voice actors, 2 good voice actresses, and about 5 "anime cliche" sounding people who are passed around... The rest are absolutely awful.
In a game where dialog is 99% of the activity, and the goal is for players to "like" the characters - poor voice acting can really kill a game. They may do better off just removing the voices altogether, as it would have less a negative effect than someone sounding like they have are reading in a monotone.
As to the game itself - it was a huge hit in Japan... But I didn`t really like it. It seemed to hinge on cheapening the efforts and aspirations of various historical figures. Instead of wanting to better Japan or anything noble like that, the real reason was out of love for the heroine, etc... I couldn`t stop my eye rolling enough to actually get into the story.
Love the artist though.
