Boy, the future is getting crowded.
Just as we're adjusting to the futuristic game streaming of OnLive and different, but still pretty astounding Gaikai, we have to welcome the new kid. PC game streamer Happy Cloud will officially launch on the 18th of this month.
Where services like OnLive stream video of your gameplay from a remote server, Happy Cloud is actually bringing the full game to your computer. You download just the files you need to get started and then, as you play, you download the rest of the required files in the background until you have the entire game on your hard drive. Notable advantage: Offline play!
If Happy Cloud has a hurdle (and it's a big one) it's the severely limited selection. There are currently fewer than 10 titles on offer, though others like Cities in Motion and Europa Universalis will arrive soon. The company told us more games are on the way, but, for the moment, Happy Cloud's game selection seems like it's desperately in need of a silver lining.

I think the strain of downloading files during a multiplayer game would cause too much lag to enjoy the game. There is a reason steam preemptively pauses your downloads when you want to start a game.

I'm interested.
Onlive requires a pretty speedy and stable connection which can limit certain gamers.
Glad there are options.

@Dhexodus OnLive will soon be upgrading their algorithms. Once they do, the speed requirements will be reduced to around 2mbps to use the service. The speed requirements will be even smaller for mobile devices, about 1 mbps for tablets and around 500k for smartphones.

You are a new breed.
OnLive Elitist?
We are a long way from having something like this work well, and it will likely take programmers coding specificially for the service to overcome latency issues that you cannot just wish away.
Calling a realist an elitist is all well and good for you ego, but it does nothing to solve the very real problems posed by a real-time interactive medium. This isn't remote desktop, the latency IS an issue.
OnLive specifically has other issues relating to image quality, running games on the lowest settings, etc, that have more to do with the low quality of the service than anything else. They may overcome those issues, but the latency problem isn't going away.

I was a paying subscriber up until just recently (end of June) with OnLive on my cable connection which is 30Mb/10Mb. It's reasonably fast and I'm able to watch Netflix and game on Xbox Live simultaneously without lag. The same can't be said for OnLive at all and that is the honest truth. Even when running by itself, it is still prone to ugly artifacts that detract from the experience of playing normally good looking games.
While I agree this sort of tech may well be where the future is headed, I don't think you can generalize by saying anyone that wants to run a game at 60+ FPS at a decent resolution (ie: HD @ 1280x720) makes them a "PC elitist". It's just the way things have always been ... and OnLive just isn't ready for prime time at the moment. You make it sound like people who bought into BluRay are idiots because the extra definition isn't necessary... laughable.

Interesting, but there may be one major flaw. It can only support certain games. After all, how would a game like Unreal Tournament work on it where you can pick any level from the start?
The only solution is for game developers to limit their games to allowing the player to only play one level when they start a game. And make the players wait until the download is done to play the rest.

I'd much rather use OnLive because then I don't have to worry about HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS for the game I want to play. I also don't have to worry about if i'm running the game on a Mac PC or the Microconsole. So there. That's why I love OnLive.

Poor job of trolling dude..it works just fine on a steady fast connection. The visuals are fine also for anyone but PC elitists. I have played more then a dozen games on the service and it works for me right now because I have no way to upgrade my PC until Christmas.

what is this PC elitist BS being passed around anymore? how about just people that don't like macrovision blocks in their video if it can be avoided?
and lag. lag lag lag lag. Has nothing to do with where you game, Onlive is full of latency that can't be overcome without coding specifically for the service, and even then you won't be able to time things to the precision required for somethig like splosion man.

Cool concept. With disk space and faster and less bandwidth restricted internet access becoming more prevalent and cheaper all the time though, the difficulty of downloading whole games is dissipating (if it hasn't already) for what I would assume is most gamers. Could really take off in the casual space though.

I love the juxtaposition of "Happy Cloud" and angry, vengeful, orphaned Batman.
It's like...cheer up Batman, look at those clouds. Your parents may be dead, but you've still got Alfred, you know? You're also rich Bruce. Filthy rich.

MMOs like Guild Wars and World of Warcraft already do this.
Also, this type of installation exists in disc form. It was one of Microsoft's toted game features for Vista, being able to play a game before it was fully installed from the disc. afaik, only one game has used it: Halo 2.

So this is kinda like steam? Although it reminds me of WoW's trial program where you download the starting area's, play and the game downloads and installs when you play. Neat.

If they added the capability to make your own gaming cloud by putting games on a powerful computer and streaming to other devices, I'd be interested.
As it is, it doesn't really seem like a cloud.

Id still prefer Onlive, its great theres competition for Onlive meaning it will need to up its service, but the ability to just stream the game and not have it use up any of my hard drive is too good.

Im with Ordeith on this one. I pay a lot of money for my games. If anyone dared giving the game in low resolution, choppy, and laggy presentation I wouldn't pay for it.
Its not a question of being a "pc elitist" but someone who demands quality in the products and services they pay hard-earned money for. You can't compare a "movie camera in low res video" because most of the time those are illegally recorded and you're getting it for free.
Right now, OnLive is a great idea but a crappy service that needs to develop and gain an interesting library before anybody should be paying attention to it.

Why do we have to be trolling?
Maybe its the fact that from where you guys have had bad experiences you either have A)Packet loss issues, B) a Distance Issue to one of the datacenters or C) Low quality internet services to begin with?
Why is it okay for you to continually bash the service, but its trolling when people who actually use it on a daily basis and have GOOD experiences with it refute your claims of it being "low resolution garbage"?
In fact, I challenge ANYONE to try OnLive now that hasn't tried it in the past or had tried it even recently. They just updated the client to support lower bandwidth ISPs and many people who found it unplayable before are finding it to be working just fine now.
Bottom line is this: Don't just read and believe any hate on ANY service, especially when one like OnLive is FREE to sign up for and download and to go in and demo 30 minutes of any game on the service is open to anybody. Why don't you stop being a sheep and form your own opinion on things like this by trying them with your own hardware, with your own eyes, and form your OWN opinions.

So its trolling when 10 people say they love onlive and one idiot says its garbage? im pretty sure its the other way around buddy.
@The Only Girl
Well i hate to tell you this but unlike you people have lives, they have familys to support, they have schools to pay for. There are 100 times more people that would rathar save 600$ for one lower resolution setting because thats and im sorry to say this to you but that would be SMARTER. Im sorry that word might be too big for you try dictionary.com they explain it good.
Here's a question why do we pay 700$ for a console or a high end pc? its to play the game so if we were able to play these games (maxed out in most cases) without the hardware wouldnt that be the future because the end goal is the game not the hardware, the hardware is just marketing. Onlive has long ways to go but they just lowered their requirement from 3mbps to 2mbps and soon itll be even lower so Ordeith yes the LAG will come to a stop and believe it or not the LAG is UR fault for being too poor to get a good internet for a guy that wants to spend more money on hardware you should try internet. Its not all about the speed its the quality (Packet loss, jitter etc.)
If you have never tried Onlive TRY it its 100% free to make an account and try 99% of their games for 30 mins for free no credit card info required. Unlike services like this where u gotta pay before you find out if it works. Its risk free Doesnt work well move on but Onlive isnt here to steal ur money they just want u to enjoy games thats what i love about Onlive they are genuine.

"Quit a bit laggy to, though it seems their small fanbase can get used to it"
I love that onlive is 18+ so we get people who can spell. As for the fanbase get a calculator and count how many times you got bashed.
With the exception of FEAR 2 all the onlive games are MAXED OUT. It may not be maxed out for you because of your internet but thats a testament of the technology that can reduce quality for performance automatically. I would recommend you get off your couch, go upstairs form ur basement and tell your mommy to buy you better internte or yell it out which ever your more used to doing :).
