21 year olds screaming at kids? Is that really a thing? I'm not a fan of CoD so I've never played anything other than split screen with "bros" in a dorm room, but I'm an avid Halo player and stuff like that is pretty much unheard of.

I hear kids once in a while, but most people actually just let them do their thing on mic.

@Electrium I find that sort of encounter more often than any other. The little kids still do their thing, but then they get put down, often with even filthier and cruel remarks, by guys with voices deeper than Sam Elliot.

Any time I've played Halo online, it's almost never without someone spouting curses at someone or other... usually with a racist or anti-gay slant.

This kind of thing is why I don't play multiplayer. Most people are complete douchebags if you give them any measure of anonymity, and unless I know the people I'm playing with, my annoyance level quickly overcomes any enjoyment I might be having. The last time I played multiplayer and had fun was a Legendary run on Halo 3.

To me, and millions of others, Halo is the hallmark of modern shooters. It was the first game to truly take the 1st person shooter genre to the next level.

It was, and still is one of the smoothest, most satisfying series I've ever played. All the guns, the vehicles, and movement feel just so right, and there have been so few games that even came close to that.

One of the best franchises of all time, no doubt.

"30 seconds of fun"

Repetition at it's finest. Stretching 30 seconds of fun into a full blown 7-hour (or more) game is overkill. I'd rather have a variety of things to do to break up the action.

Look at Smash Bros. (Melee and Brawl) and Zelda. Both series have plenty of things to do outside of fighting and dungeon exploring (respectively).

And then you mention Smash Bros? You're complaining about repetition and you bring up a fighter? Nothing against fighters, but they are the very definition of repetition.

@aristokrat

The reason I brought up Smash Bros. Brawl is because it has variety. There are plenty of things to do in Brawl besides basic fighting:

Break the Targets
Home Run Contest
All-Star mode
Stage Builder
Boss Battles
Multi-Man Brawl
Trophy and sticker collecting
Subspace Emissary
Spectator mode
"Events" mode
Coin Launcher to get more trophies and stickers
Completing the dozens of challenges, some of which are borderline impossible.
etc. etc.

Smash Bros. Brawl is more than a simple fighting game. There is so much stuff to do, unlock, discover, that I never get bored playing it. It's the main reason I have a Wii (along with the Virtual Console games).

I could literally make the same argument for Halo's different modes

Campaign
Capture the Flag
Invasion
Oddball
Slayer
SWAT
Zombies
Headhunter
Race
Arena

All different modes, all containing *much* more depth than the coin launcher game in Brawl.

Halo is so much more than a shooting game. There is so much story to watch, armor to unlock, constantly updated playlists to compete on, that I never get bored of playing it.

@tendoboy1984 Maybe you haven't heard, but Halo is one of the single-most customizable console FPS' to ever exist. If you can imagine a gametype, I guarantee you it can be made.

People have already created skeeball, bowling, football, tag, hide-and-seek, pinball, racing, you name it. Hell, you can re-create Goldeneye's Golden Gun mode. This isn't even the tip of the iceberg. There is literally a plethora-and-a-half of gametypes and maps that have been and will be created.

And I haven't even mentioned the slew of competitive modes to satisfy a more conventional FPS fan.

All of these features as well as a theatre mode great for machinima, a fantastic campaign with one of the best soundtracks, and polish for miles.

You can't honestly tell me there isn't any variety in Halo.

@tendoboy1984 Halo has a whole bunch of ways to play the game, too. Just in the campaign, there's standard gunplay, driving, car combat, tank combat, aerial combat, jetpacking, sniping, stealth, space combat, rail shooting, turret sections, exploration, and all sorts of other sorts of encounters.

In multiplayer, there are myriad standard gametypes with all sorts of ways to tweak the experience. Slayer, zombies, invasion, CTF, king of the hill, race, oddball, hockey, and so much more. There's even a chess gametype, the unique sport of grifball. Heck, you can download all sorts of maps if you're in the mood for some platforming.

You don't know anything about Halo if you think it lacks variety.

Geoff put it quite well in the first episode of Acheivement Hunter (look up the later ones, they're great)"

"...this is the stuff that makes Halo the best game of all time... At some point you get tired of killing people, right? You're like, well I've beat the campaign six times, and I don't really feel like playing matchmaking, what else--I guess I'll shelve Halo and play somethin'--No, no I won't, because I'll just create a new f*ckin' game."

Truly awesome interview! I realize he's no longer with Bungie but reading this just made me even more excited for whatever Bungie has next. They get it on so many levels.

Of course, the same applies to Sucker Punch as well. Although, both companies could benefit from better writers!

Halo had its time long ago, and hasnt moved much since then

Also who wouldve thought Sucker Punch creator of Infamous had a philosophy of repeating things
[Yes i know it was in relation to Bungie but it seemed to have caught on]

Also the whole AI sitting back waiting for you, Not exactly a wonderful achievement but bravo making it sound like a feature.

Firstly I think you really didn't grab how this 30 second AI thing works, secondly I don't care if the hanging back thing is unrealistic because Halo has always felt all the more fun for it.

The halo series has never done much for me in terms of technical ability but it has always felt brilliant which is what this interview has been about and I respect whatever they did to get there regardless of realism.

Hm... Odd.. I couldn't agree more that 'Halo', as a whole, is a gimmick built game and really relies on that '30 seconds' of worthwhile gaming being repeated over and over and over and over... those games are all just so samey and boring... but.. to each his own I guess....

it's a game with a formula. every game has a formula. the only difference is that sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't. the way you talk, it could be said that every game ever created is "samey and boring".

lol I went to highschool with this dude... he was short skinny had freckles and looked sickly all the time. People used to tease him and asked what was wrong with him, and he would say "I have grape disease"...and they would leave him alone. That resonated with me because thats when I learned that the weak have to be smart to survive...there is no such thing as grape disease, but that wit and his nerdy ass went straight to the top with that..still looks weird though lol

Halo rocks. I've loved it since I started playing it, I still love it today, and I'll still love it in the future.

With that out of the way, the rest of you (you know who you are): if you don't like Halo, one, why the hell are you reading an article about Halo, and two, why are you commenting? I guess it could be the whole troll thing, but I tend not to devote any of my mental processes to such creatures. Oh, internet.
