Forbes reports that Zynga once had its eyes on PopCap Games, and offered $1 billion in cash for the company. The Forbes source says that the company would have funded the deal with a line of credit from Goldman Sachs, one of the underwriters of the 'Ville-maker's IPO.
The Forbes report reiterates some of the details from a TechCrunch report in June, which noted that China-based Tencent (which owns League of Legends dev Riot Games) was also in the mix.
In the end, PopCap Games was acquired by Electronic Arts, for $750 million and another $550 million in performance payouts.

One billion in cash for a casual game studio and they found a better offer.... I'm just not sure what to think about this.

@SisypheanLife It sounds like they cared for their employees who got them there. The performance payouts are probably linked to the employees who will remain with the company.
Thats what it read to me anyway. if so, good on them.

"up to another $550 million based on the performance of the business over the first two years after completion of the deal"
I don't know how likely it is that the employees will get much. Bonuses like that usually go to the top dogs and shareholders.

I'm glad EA bought PopCap. Pogo is a top tier crack gaming company as well. They fit perfectly. Maybe we'll see some Peggle pachinko machines...

Yeah, what a strange comment. Then again, I guess Angels are all probably a little out of touch.

Mmmmk kids, time for an finance lesson.
"In cash" means that it's just plain money, not in stock, stock options, or other investments.
Zynga would have probably just wired the money to somebody's account. They would not have exchanged tons of briefcases filled with money.

Your logic makes this scenario significantly less interesting.

Wow! Nice display of "standards", Popcap! If I had to sell-out, I too would prefer to sell-out to EA than frakking Zynga. Imagine seeing your beloved creations with that ominous dog silhouette plastered on top.

Dear Zynga,
I am an owner of a small but rapidly expanding casual games site, www.CopPap.com. I assure you we are very popular and I would happily sell you my studio for $1billion.

Bad enough they put facebook "games" in my ipod, I don't want microtransactions and ridiculous selling out of people I know to play actually interesting casual games.

Zynga would have been a much better fit for Popcap than EA in my opinion.
Mark my words, EA will find a way of messing up Popcap.
