@Rocket Raccoon The COD4 plot is suprisingly deep. It has a level of sophisticated storytelling that doesn't exist in many games. MW2 on the other hand, is rediculous. Since all of IW's main players are now at Respawn, there is no hope left.

as far as "plot" is concerned in the Call of Duty franchise, i'm pretty sure they only use it as a means to keep the action moving and make you at least feel a slight bit of attachment to the characters. the plot in Call of Duty 4 was crap, but that doesn't mean i wasn't enthralled by the atmosphere in the "Ghillies in the Mist" mission or that i didn't feel the urgency in the final mission when they launch those nukes off. still, i didn't really give a crap when everyone got wasted during the final fight on the bridge.

bottom line is, if you want plot, don't go to Call of Duty. i mean, why would you? unless movies like Shooter and Black Hawk Down pull at your heartstrings.

y'know, after i submitted that i thought about it a bit more and realized the error of my ways. i love Black Hawk Down, and it actually was a little emotional for me when that kid got shot in the artery in his leg and died. i suppose (if Joystiq had an edit button) i would go back and change it to "Shooter and Behind Enemy Lines" or something like that. :)

I couldn't because I never figured out who was who. I played through CoD4 twice, know there are reappearing characters, and actually tried to pay attention, but the characters were all basically just generic military guys (sometimes with a mustache or accent) all shouting orders at you. There's nothing really defining about any of them. Same thing with the bad guys. They're all just terrorists with funny accents and you have to kill them cause they want to take over the world.

So I just make up my own story. My guy has a compulsive need to shoot people in the nuts. Terrorist nuts are the best, but any nuts will do. If some guy starts talking to me I have to slash my knife across his face until he finally gets the picture and shuts up. He hates cars and will throw all extra grenades he has at any that look like they might explode. He also has a twin brother, but they were separated at birth and he lives on the other side of the world. Using telepathic powers he can see into his mind and control his actions and shoot as many terrorists in the balls as he can. That's the only explanation for switching between two people I could come up with.

Yeah that's about all I got. It's easier to follow than the MW plotline anyway...

Yeah I followed the story just fine, but what I didn't understand was why the hell things happened the way they did?

THat's the part that didn't make sense. Commit thousands of soldiers to get one guy out of prison and somehow you just know that the guy will be motivated to launch a nuclear assault? And then for some reason you need to kill off his entire team because...? Oh, because the general is a bad guy? Wait? but didn't the "good guy" launch nukes?

Maybe it made sense to someone at IW, but they left out all the motivation for every character in teh game.

What in the world are you talking about? If anything, you completely proved my point just now. The ultranationalists used the airport assault as a false flag attack, blaming the US and using that to justify retaliation. Your team is trying to find proof that Makarov was behind it to gain the support of the international community. Hence why only the US and the UK are involved in the conflict with Russia until Modern Warfare 3.

Price is Makarov's greatest enemy, and he knows how and can help find the proof the SAS need. Price, however, goes rogue and wants to end the war, and in doing so launches a nuke which he sets to detonate above the US so it won't actually cause any causalities. The SAS didn't want him to do that. He went rogue. When Soap was yelling at it him during that mission it was pretty obvious. Ironically, this is a false flag attack by the US which they can now blame on Russia.

I'll admit that things weren't as clear as they were in COD4, but I didn't find anything confusing or convoluted about the plot in MW2. It was just engaging enough to follow the action. I liked Price as a character, I thought Shepard was a great and ironic enemy, and the final showdown was pretty epic. That's my two cents. I just find all the hate of the plot to be driven by elitism, not unbiased criticism.

The whole "No Russian" "controversy" was incredibly contrived and forced. From the "HEY GUYS THIS IS CONTROVERSIAL YOU WANNA SKIP?" in-game warning to the unbelievably blatant use of pathos in the actual game, the only reason why the level was put in the game was precisely for viral marketing purposes. It made no sense story-wise and it really wouldn't have mattered if the level was removed altogether.

You bet your ass IW is going to try to do another contrived "controversial" level for MW3 to pull in the same kind of cheap attention. I wonder what they'll come up with. Bomb a day-care? Decapitating puppies? It's like IW is on a limbo contest with itself. How low can they go?

@PointlessPuppies Not true. The 'No Russian' series of events are what the Russians use to justify a military invasion of America, as the airport massacre was pinned on an American.

However, as so many people have pointed out, in this day and age of videos recording every where, all the time, there's no way soemthing like that would get blamed on the wrong party.

We need to get you a sippy cup for all the IW he Kool Aid you're drinking.

First off, the game is called Call of Duty. The "duty" in CoD is to country. For the game to put you in the position to gun down civilians, as an American double-agent, or whatever the heck IW cooked up as a reason, is not believable in any way, shape or form. The game left its own roots.

Second, if Russia wanted to invade America, seriously, it wouldn't need an airport massacre as a pretext. Russia could stage its own reason. To think a single act of airport terrorism could instigate a world power to invade America is the worst Tom Clancy LSD trip I've ever heard of.

The "No Russians" level justifies nothing in the real logic of life. That's why it comes off as such a shock-stunt. You can watch eight seasons of 24 and not find such a clumsy attempt to pass off massive violence, and 24 blew up a frakking nuke in L.A.!

Infinity Ward is a bunch of poseurs if they stand behind that level. And sure, your video surveillance reason for the level being a joke is also valid, but it just happens to be the twentieth reason it sucks, not the first.

Woah, you need to relax, he actually discredited the story pretense of the No Russian mission in his last paragraph.

I personally take issue with No Russian cause it works horribly as a game sequence. We're place in a situation where they don't even pretend that our actions impact anything. Whether you open fire on the civilians or not you progress through the level the same. If a stray bullet from your weapon hits one of the terrorists then your cover is "blown" (let's stop and think about that considering we find out in the end that your cover was blown anyway ) but somehow refusing to shoot any civilians is consider ok and acceptable and doesn't impact mission progress.

Overall it's a weak segment that was an attempt to be "deep" and meaningful in a game about shooting as many dudes as possible while jumping snowmobiles over massive cliffs.

How can an intelligent gamer relax, when 95% of the population thought the level was fine? Saying the level doesn't work because of security cameras is like whacking a smart person upside the head with the butt-end of an M14. The level doesn't work because it makes no logical sense in any geo-political context.

Infinity Ward has done some messed up stuff to put this level into the modern gamer's consciousness. It's a trend that could be shut down, if gamers said, enough, we don't want to be mind-screwed and manipulated so we can shoot people we shouldn't be shooting at.

Made no sense story wise? A nationalist terrorist organization has taken over Russia and starting attacking Europe. You go undercover to infiltrate their organization. To proceed with the mission you have to sit there and watch them kill people. It was a harsh reminder of the reality of war: there are causalities, and sometimes you have a chance to save them but you can't for the greater good.

No really, WHY DO YOU PEOPLE HATE ON THIS SERIES SO MUCH? Smh @ elitism/hipsterism.

Some of the greatest films of all time have some of most ridiculous and most unbelievable plots and plot points, but the experience is engaging enough that it's enjoyable regardless. That's that great thing about entertainment: it doesn't have to be non fiction or alternative fiction.

People seem to forget that video games are often a form of escapism. Just enjoy the ride. If you're entertained than you're entertained. All the people hating on COD now remind me of the people who hated on Paranormal Activity (the first one anyway).
