Maybe it's just me, but this review just doesn't sound like Ludwig. On topic, totally getting this.

It's not just you. I was wondering if it was originally written in Afrikaans and then "localized" for North America.

It's actually the product of some software they're writing to replace me. It needs some adjustment, apparently.

Would agree. While I'm sure they're all solid titles, this does feel like the weakest grouping to date.

Going into this review as someone who had never heard of the game before, I'm still going to have to Google it to figure out just what the heck it is.

That said, it sounds very interesting.

Couldn't disagree more.

Other than Fruit Ninja, which I just have no interest in, this is probably the best for me. There've been some great games in past promotions, games that I was very interested in, but mostly games I didn't really care about until after I played them and fell in love. But three games this time around are probably my most anticipated of the year (Bastion, From Dust, and especially ITSP). Will they be better than BCR, Braid, Castle Crashers, GeoWars 2,Trials, 'Splosion Man, or Shadow Complex? Who knows. The only way this would have been better for me is if they replaced Fruit Ninja with Fez, hands down my most wanted title this year.

Forgot Limbo and Guardian of Light in that list of excellence, with Limbo probably being the exception. I couldn't wait to play that.

Do want, but sad it's not the AAA-indie I was hoping for. Tempted to wait til it's 800, or has a DotW, but I'll be getting all the others, so I might as well to get that sweet dungeon-crawler game..

Guess I'll be seeing the kid tomorrow. :)

Me thinks confused you are. Insanely twisted shadow planet alone makes this summer arcade lineup worth it. Bastion looks promising. you should probably go play call of duty to mend your soul.

What else do you need to know? Coming out of the review you know it's an action RPG with great graphics, decent combat, excellent music, likable characters and a cool story.

I'm surprised to see so many comments about this being the worst Summer of Arcade lineup because IMO it's probably the best since 2008 with last year being the worst.

Obviously it all comes down to the kinds of games you like to play but Bastion, From Dust and ITSP are all unique original titles that have my interest piqued in the way that only Limbo did last year. I plan on picking up Bastion tomorrow, the first time I've paid full price for an XBLA game in years, and the first time I've ever paid $15.

actually, it does. check out the "Bastion Info" section on the right. it gives a brief description of the game, the developer and publisher info., the price, the release date, the ESRB rating, and the genre: which is listed as "Action RPG". might want to be a little more thorough, next time ;)

Well this was a fun review, it was almost like a demo for the game's narration. A charming game is more than enough to make me happy right now, and it sounds like this game will absolutely deliver.

@Electrium "charming"...

You know, I've become extremely fond of low-budget, low-personnel indie games lately. I've described them as unique, innovative, back-to-basics. Somehow "charming" has eluded me thus far. You, my friend, have hit the proverbial nail on the head (possibly with a golden hammer). This game, like Limbo and Braid, is charming.

This game deserves our support. I always look forward to the summer of arcade. I am loving all these great new indie/arcade games released each year.

All quality XBLA titles deserve our support. They are a breath of fresh air amongst the stale and stagnant yearly rehash fps shooter franchises.

Been following the development via GB's site, I'm not gaga for it but I think I'll pick it up at full price. Between the Steam Sale, the PSN Sale, and Summer of Arcade, it's hard to justify the price sometimes (everything gets a sale eventually, right?) but I think I'll enjoy it.

@VideoGameConnection To play devil's advocate here, this is the first Summer of Arcade I haven't been tempted into buying games I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Partially due to the weak lineup, but mostly due to the all-or-nothing "deal" of a free game if you get all 5.

I don't own a Kinect, nor do I have any desire to. Even if I did, I'd never get Fruit Ninja. Suddenly every game on the list has to be carried by its own merits. Half of the games I was excited about didn't even make it into the Summer of Arcade (Trenched and Ms.Splosion Man). The Army Men series has permanently turned me off from any game featuring little green plastic soldiers. 3 games left in Summer of Arcade, and now I'm just considering waiting until they're on sale.

So yes, this probably is the worst Summer of Arcade, but it's no fault of Bastion's. If I only get one title from it, it'll be Bastion.

@FuzzyPierce Right up along the top of the page, in the gray bar where it says "Bastion" on the left, it also says has the XBOX and PC tag boxes on the right. Also, at the bottom of the review and in the fine print, it states it will be available on XBLA and Steam later in the summer. It also has the Summer of Arcade tag at the bottom of the review, which is kind of a Microsoft thing.

I was going to say that I agree this line-up is weak, but I checked out Toy Soldiers 2 and it actually looks pretty darn cool. I tried the demo of the first one and was pretty unimpressed, but this one looks to turn things up a notch. So with that game looking interesting, I'd say this year is no worse than 2009, when we* were duped into buying TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled.

*My friends and I were so excited for this... how did they mess up? How?!

I agree -- getting a Kinect just to get Fruit Ninja so that you can get a free game is rather pointless. I'm excited about Bastion, From Dust, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet & Toy Soldiers 2, but I think I'll wait until a XBL Gold deal for them (if it's not before the end of the year).

Bastion looks great, sounds fun and rewarding. Nice to see it with a solid 4.
I am looking forward to this years SoA, it is nice to see an XBLA Kinect game being offered. However, I understand those without a Kinect being riled up at its inclusion. From Dust, ITSP, Toy Soldiers, and Bastion all seem to be games with great potential to be fun, and I can't wait. And, I have read that Fruit Ninja Kinect is going to be the most disabled friendly Kinect game released thus far, and I hope that is true.

I'm assuming this is on the XBLA, possibly only there and no where else? You guys should consider adding Platform info to your little Info Sidebar. Just make it quick and easy to see for dweebs like me who don't know what systems a game might be available for.

There are several "what platform" comments a day. While *I* know that info is in tiny text under the stars, why would it be so difficult to put that info where it seems more naturally suitable (The right-hand information box)? When so many people can't find the info, perhaps it's not just them being "stupid," maybe it's just poor info design? If enough people complain about where the vents are on their Camry, they move the vents.

To everyone: I know before entering an article normally, you can see on the side the systems. But when "top articles" or whatever are posted at the very top of the page for viewing, that info doesn't appear.

To ironneko, I see know what you're talking about as well, and will now look there from now on. Thanks.

i think it's on par with previous years. there's never been more than one or two games i'm interested in during any of the sales of any particular year. as far as exclusives go, some years there's nothing i'm interested in. this year has Bastion, and that's it. in the past, they've had Castle Crashers, Limbo, Geometry Wars 2... and not much else that couldn't be found elsewhere. some folks loved Braid, but i thought it was pretty lame. and often times, they included games that launched simultaneously on other platforms, like Bionic Commando Rearmed and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (so i don't really count them as special "Summer of Arcade" classics). just my opinion, but i've never really been impressed by any Summer of Arcade line-up, so i don't think this one is any better or worse than the line-ups of years past.

Honestly, I'd only see Ms. Explosion Man being a good enough title for the Sumer of Arcade out of that list. Insanely Twisted Planet, From Dust, and Bastion all look amazing.

Crimson Alliance is the reward for buying all of these, which I plan to do.
