If you have to pay at least $14 then it's not pay what you want.

@hdhrant Its more like, buy this T shirt for $14 but if you have too much money on your hands we will gladly charge you more.

@hdhrant That's the thing about physical goods, they cost a lot more money to produce, replicate, and ship about the world. They're trying to at least break even, since its a fundraiser, not a free t-shirt for entitled nerds. $14 is a fair price for what is offered.

@SurlyDuff I agree with what you wrote. They should have avoided the deceptive headline with "pay what you want" (even with the asterisk), and just said "Support Monaco development and get a t-shirt" or something like that.

@hdhrant They should call it pay want you want as long as you want to pay over $14.

@hdhrant Hey all, I assume no one is too angry over this, it's not like I saved the 14 minimum until the checkout page ;)

But yeah, it's the same concept as pay what you want, in that you can pay as much over the minimum cost of goods and shipping. With digital goods that's 0$ :)

Not to be a cynic or anything, but...

"Pay what you want" at 14 is really missing the point. It would be better titled:

"Pay $14 (or more if you feel like it for some strange reason) for a Monaco shirt."

@Acosta02

For a physical good coming from a company of about 1 to 2 guys, who are also trying to finish a game, getting a publishing/console/distribution deal, I'll give them a break. This isn't some huge ass marketing campaign like Homefront's in San Fran basically giving free goods away. Same reason I haven't done the Indie Humble Bundle just recently. I don't have enough money to adequately give for charity and developers alike.

Why is the art on the belly area? I play too many video games and not enough exercise. I don't want to accent the belly area.

I paid nothing and got exactly what I wanted, which was not owning a Monaco shirt. So it's really win win.

Hey alol, yeah, it's a cheeky headline, but the point of the minimum is that it actually COSTS US SOMETHING to make and ship the shirts, unlike digital goods which cost zero dollars to distribute. The shirts cost us 8 dollars to print, 3 dollars for the packaging, and on average 3 dollars to ship. So for everyone that buys it at the lowest price, we make no profit (on average, me might make 50 cents on some, lose 50 cents on others).

We've had a nubmer of people ask for ways to donate to the project, and I never felt comfortable taking straight donations in the past, I wanted to actually give something in return, so this is how we're doing it! If you don't want to support development, don't buy a shirt! No skin off my back... :)

@AndySchatz

Andy,

Good luck getting money for your project. I look forward to maybe playing a demo or reading reviews to see if your game would be of interest to me. I think people are weary about giving money to a group of people who are unknown and unproven. People, who believe the pay what you want model will actually work, don't want to admit that it only works for established artists like Radiohead and not the up and coming artists which is sad because the developing artist is the one who needs it the most.
Asking for money without proving anything yet kinda of comes off as panhandling. I don't mean to be insulting and I know it must be hard to find funds but I just thought I would provide my reasoning on why there are so many negative comments.

Good luck! Hope you get the game finished.

BTW - I am buying a T-shirt.

@FriedConsole Thanks for buying a shirt!

Actually, I understand the negative comments... if you just read the headline and then you get ambushed by the minimum charge, it would seem dishonest.

I suppose it's a bit like panhandling, but considering that I try to actually offer something of value (devlogs) during development, I see it more like being a street musician. If you like what we're doing, chip in a few bucks and wear a shirt that helps promote the game! I don't get angry at people that listen to the music and don't pay anything... it's just an option for those that feel like contributing.

And if you don't feel like contributing or you can't afford to contribute extra cash, buy a shirt for the minimum price! That's what it's there for! 8 bucks plus shipping and handling is a pretty darn good deal I think :)

So... with that said, thanks for contributing! It means a lot to me and the team that people are willing to be generous! Every sale puts a smile on our face.

if you were uncomfortable with donations, why not just sell pre-orders for digitally delivered copies as a means to generate capital? a pay now, get it when it's done model.

i'm quite looking forward to the game though.

lol..bullshit.

The Humble Bundle is "pay what you want"...as in, you can pay as low as $1 to $1000 if you so desire(I think), but this is complete and utter non-sense. It's not pay what you want, it's pay $14 for a bloody t-shirt. Lame.
