THQ confirms co-op for Space Marine, but may be DLC
25
We've seen Warhammer 40k: Space Marine a few times now, but the one mode we still haven't heard about is a possible co-op mode. That feature appears to have been outed, however, in a Gamestop promotion that appeared last week. Promised in a pre-order bonus, among a few other things, is a "5-player co-op: Bonus FREE game mode (Day 30 DLC)." The problem is, the game's fanbase isn't quite sure how to take that – does that mean you get co-op only as a DLC mode that's paid for everyone but Gamestop pre-orders, or is it free for everyone? "8 vs 8 online MP" is also listed on the card, and we already know that's included on the game disc.
A community manager on the game's official forums posted over the weekend in what appeared to be an attempt to clarify things that the co-op mode had indeed been delayed by 30 days post-launch, but that it would be free to those who purchased the game "brand new." That suggests an online pass-style setup, not a new trick for THQ. But that forum post was itself deleted (cache here), suggesting that it too wasn't the real story.
So we went to ask THQ ourselves, and the official word from the company to Joystiq is this: "Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will have co-op. We are looking forward to announcing more details later this month!" There you go. Co-op confirmed. As to how it will be implemented, we'll all have to wait and find out.

I hope this isn't true. I'm sure that EA will probably do this as well

Remember when games used to be complete highly polished experiences? People that wait and play games months after they come out are guaranteed to have a better time nowadays.

Seriously. This is a pretty big load of crap. I'm okay with games like Rockband offering day one DLC songs and what have you, but entire game modes, especially ones as significant as co-op should be included, no questions asked.
Everything has the potential to set a precedence. This is not a good one.

I don't know about you but myself and many friends were planning on buying this as a single-player experience. The only thing that was appealing about the multiplayer was the level of customization being similar to painting your own miniatures.
Relic Entertainment has never done the Warhammer brand wrong and they have Games Workshop looming over them for consultation. I think you are getting all bent out of shape for nothing. The game looks incredible.

I don't actually. I remember a ton of games have bugs and glitches all through them and they never got patched.

Stuff like this makes me regret pre-ordering titles.
I want the title. The full title. I KNOW you aren't programming co-op into the game in the 30 days between the initial release and when co-op finally comes out. Why not give it to me right away?
This is why I'm always skeptical about pre-orders, as devs try to pull stunts like this.

So, not only do you know the inner workings of Relic Entertainment, but you also pre-ordered a game based on a feature that wasn't advertised?

Not sure what understanding the inner workings of Relic has to do with anything. I can assure you though, no studio of any size is magically creating an entire co-op element into their title, only 30 days after it launches.
Also, I didn't pre-order based on content that was not advertised. I pre-ordered it with trust that they would deliver a finished, and polished product. I put my faith in them, and their team, that they would deliver.
Trying to nickle and dime me with content is no way to win fans over, or keep ones who are already there. Remember when you bought a game and it was actually a complete title?
I'm all for DLC, in fact I love it. But removing a major gameplay mechanic just so I have to buy it from you 30 days later is not DLC.

It's pretty obvious that Relic was like "Oh, crap people keep bitchin about co-op mode, lets throw together a DLC horde mode so we won't miss our launch window". Pushing the release day back a month or two would put the smack dab in the middle of some bigger releases guaranteeing failure.
And now people are upset that the company listened to fans and is adding more to the game (most likely for free).

They commented in their forums that it will be free if you buy the game new at any point in time, and that the reasoning was that they wanted to make sure it was as polished as it possibly could be before releasing it.

Joystiq... This shits getting ridiculous, to the point where I stop reading a comment section as soon as I read the first ad. At the very least I would like to know something is proactively being done to put a stop to it.

Am I right in saying that versus comes as standard but co-op only via DLC later? If so...ouch. This could easily be something that other companies mimic.

They already lost my money for this game by pulling this Online Pass crap/buy brand new crap. I'll wait until this winter when the game is $20 - $25 on Steam, unless they don't have dedicated servers. Then I just won't buy the piece of trash at all. I was really looking forward to this, but they're pulling a full-on EA with this.
I am so freaking sick of them pulling features out of the effing games and calling it Day 1 DLC. It's NOT Day 1 DLC, all you did was STRIP SOMETHING OUT OF THE GAME, THEN SELL IT BACK TO US!

Can't stand DLC. Either delay the game until it's finished, or lower the price down to reflect an incomplete game. Too many companies are doing this and it's ruining the industry. I was planning on playing CoOp with a friend the day of release. Not really looking for a single player Warhammer experience when the entire point of Warhammer is MULTIPLAYER.
Maybe with some luck Games Workshop will pull their 40k license for ruining this franchise.

At what point did the games industry decide they are different from every other industry on earth and had the right to harm/destroy/modify the experience for used game sales?

I love how all of you are misinterpreting the article, you're all just complaining because the person who wrote this article worded it horribly. No,this isn't day 1 content, but it is free to whoever buys a new copy of the game. (Which is better IMO since the devs get some money instead of it all going to Gamestop). They're delaying it a month because they want to polish it and make it work properly.
