Why is it that every time the PS3 gets an update, you all make it seem like a bad thing? You make it seem as though spending 10 minutes to update the service and a get whole bunch of new features is a bad thing.

Regardless... This is pretty sweet. Too bad most of the goodies go to playstation plus members but, still useful.

This is the first time in 2 years (unless you count the one last year that added 3D a major update) that has provided any new features...and it's only for Plus members.

@MW4560 its a bad thing when it adds little to no features to me, the end user, something that was all too common for awhile.

and i get why antipiracy updates ect. are done, but it dosent make me any less angry that i'm stuck in the crossfire between sony and the pirates

It takes forever sometimes to update your console. It is like the thing downloads the whole OS and installs it instead of downloading the file changes.

Updating games is also bad....

@MW4560 - Because the majority of us aren't Playstation Plus members so we're spending 10 minutes to update our system for no reason whatsoever.

Because Sony screwed themselves back when every update took over 30 minutes, sometimes hours to install. People dont forget crap like that and are reasonably scared of PS3 updates even though lately they have taken a regular amount of time. The longest PS3 update took me 3.5 hours to download and install.

Good grief. It's easy to forget when that stuff never happened to a majority of people. You need to get your internet service checked or something.

Usually takes way longer than 10 minutes. I just don't like the fact it locks your system down but doesn't automatically do the update when it turns on. It just doesn't make sense.

@MW4560 because it's bullshit. A lot of people dont use their PS3 for just games and don't use it everyday. So one night you turn it on to watch a bluray or something and everyone is waiting around, you then have to wait 10 to 30 minutes for it to update. It kills the mode and needs to be fixed.

@MW4560 - I'll save the comment space for just a link to exactly how I feel:

http://destroyedcontroller.blogspot.com/2011/08/sony-updates-ps3-to-37-restricts-new.html

tl;dr = Forcing you to pay for console functionality (not features; big difference) is absolute horseshit. What Sony is having you pay for, Microsoft lets you do for free (or, in the case of cloud saves, /will/ let you do for free later this year), and what Sony lets you have for free that Microsoft makes you pay for (you know what it is) is laggy and unstable.

When the new features don't effect the vast majority?

The Majority of Updates add NOTHING of value yet we are forced to do them.

Because Microsoft can get their Patching System working right, being able to patch even the most major update in under minute, when Sony can't seem to get theirs right?

I can't remember the last Update (other than this one) that added something of Value to ME the consumer.

I can go on and on, but those are a few reasons why we hate them

Also, Lagy and unstable? how can you make a statment (and pass it as fact) when you never personally gamed on a PS3... i have... and the online structure is STABLE AND LAG FREE... i swear, a fanboy war in 2011 is sooooo pathetic and sad. @mahouneko - And I quote what I linked to:

"Yes, I'm fully aware that Sony doles out free multiplayer, but has anyone had a truly fun experience while playing online on a PS3? I've had absolute garbage service while playing online*. At least on my 360, my updates come few and far between, but they come with shit worth the update, downloads in seconds, and installs in seconds, without paying extra.

And my multiplayer is stable."

*As an addendum, both my Xbox and PS3 operate on the same wireless network, both sitting next to each other, directly below the Airport Extreme router that sits one floor above. All of my other wireless devices (MacBook Pro, iPhone, 3DS, PSP, Wii, and the 360 included) operate just fine on Wi-Fi, but the PS3 has the worst - absolute /worst/ - wireless networking speeds, in that the connections are slow, unstable and shoddy, at best. Sure, a powerline adapter would be nice, but spending $100+ on one that would get ~200Mbps for a system I hardly use outside of exclusives (prior to Infamous 2, it was Dead Nation because it was free, and Killzone 3, hoping for redemption for KZ2 that never came) isn't worth it.

Thats your first problem. Once I moved on from using Time Capsule as my wireless router performance on all my devices (including two Mac's, Apple TV & 4 iPhones) increased by a lot. The one Apple product I regretted buying is Time Capsule. Slingbox has worked like a dream since I went with a Cisco router.

I have a live enables Xbox and a PS3. I do all my online gaming on the PS3. I have no lag whatsoever, no matter what game I play. They both use the same internet. I don't find live to be a better experience at all. It isn't worse either. They're pretty much the same. Also, both services have differentiating features but cross game chat does not make live hands down better.

Considering that you pay a yearly subscription service to Microsoft for the privilege of online multiplayer that is entirely peer-to-peer based, I'd say that you're getting ripped off for what should have been a free service, especially on PCs.

Furthermore, your Live subscription does absolutely nothing to mitigate the amount of advertising you receive from Microsoft which is ubiquitous to the entire experience on that system as opposed to being compartmentalized.

Lastly, I use a WiFi connection with my PS3 and I've played MAG games without any problems. Most of my problems with my connection are largely related to my shitty Netgear router. Ever since I replaced that with a Cisco 851W router, I haven't had any issues with my connection.

@MW4560 The "features" that they're giving to playstation plus users aren't features you should have to pay for. I'm not paying for cross game chat, automatic trophy syncing and auto cloud saves. The first two would be nice, considering my xbox on live silver can do the same thing. They know they aren't getting shit from people signing up for playstation plus so I'm sure by time the PS4 comes out PSN will resemble Live in terms of free access compared to paid access. They could just find something worth paying $50 a year for if they think lettin people play multiplayer online for free is what makes them stand out from their competitors. I'm not a big Microsoft fan, I know Sony couldn't give us cross game chat for a long time because Microsoft held the rights to it, but now they're clearly providing it, and you have to pay $50 a year for it.

I read your article on your blog, it's horrible. I would stop reviewing things if I were you.

0 comments because your bias just abounds. Horrible review. Sony is trying to entice people to pay for a service that they don't have to. As a result, they are adding features that are unique and SHOULD be exclusive for people who would like to pay for those features. I think it's crap that you just have to pay to play a game on-line with your friends, when you already pay internet. F' that. Counter-strike and steam have it right. And I have something called a computer, which can play netflix and hulu (BETTER) than the xbox or PS3. Stop being a homer. Both offer different features and you don't have to have them if you don't want to pay. Stop acting like paying for one is better than paying for another when they are essentially doing the same thing. Oh, and auto-saving your games on the cloud (no matter what service) is a feature, not a functionality, it's a total BS that you say that they are going to give game saves to the cloud network for silver users. You know that you HAVE to have GOLD in order to get that feature (which means paying, something you said you don't have to to do). Your so lame. Learn that both systems offer something good and unique and both are trying to advance gaming into areas we have yet to travel

you said that xbox has stable servers? how about everytime a new call of duty game comes out it crashes? or how about this RECENT article in joystiq?

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/03/xbox-live-experiencing-service-outages-including-black-ops-and/

oh and on a side note, PS3 have something called a web browser, which can pretty much connect to facebook, twitter, or whatever the xbox does, and you can do that without paying an extra dime. What a horrible review, you should get out of the game, your lame.

It downloaded a demo once or twice for me (I think the top down Tomb Raider game was one), but it almost never does usually. I think I read that it would download what is recommended for you, but I'm guessing if that actually means anything, it would be what Sony decides to send to everyone.

I've never had it download anything but the first episode of The Tester either. If you have an internet cap or something you might not want to keep it on, but if you don't then just turn it on. It downloads patches for games every once in a while for me. Most of the time it doesn't do anything though.

Honestly, automatic download rarely even does anything for me.

I'm actually surprised when I turn on my PS3 and it says it downloaded patches for games, because I've had to update games many times manually, even though I have automatic download on lol.

It depends on the content I guess that gets pushed through it. It's typically just patches for AAA titles (Like Kill Zone 3 has been pushed through it for me more than once) and FW updates. However, FW updates don't automatically install, just download, since you have to accept the license agreement.

Whenever you are logged in, your PS3 will always attempt to sync trophies either when you view them, or when you look at your PSN profile (or someone else's). If you do this often, it usually only takes a few seconds even on a slow connection, but it's still something you have to sit through.
