At first, I figured it was the visor, but even his hands are way too light skinned. The guy's pretty dark. Not Wesley Snipes or Plaxico Burress-darkness, but yeah.

Wait, it's 2011. I need to stop with Chappelle jokes; save for laughs when Joystiq has an article on PEGGLE.

I'm not working for Joystiq per se, but I'm freelancing with them. I love what they do though, and if they offered me a spot, I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I do play MADDEN, and even I didn't notice significant enough changes. Not that they're expected after an engine-rework last year; but for $60, I hope for a degree more of replay value.

If you've paid the least bit attention to the Madden series for the past 5 - 6 years you'd know that roster updates occur on a weekly basis; sometimes multiple times in a given week. So when they release a game each year it's clearly not "just a roster update." This may have been true before consoles had wireless connectivity, but FAR from the case today. That's a typical response from Madden haters; a very ignorant one at that. Get the facts straight before you rip into the game like that.

@evanset6 You're right, it isn't just a roster update. This year it has PLAYBOOKS!, Slightly shinier graphics, "Better Collusion System" see also, we tweaked the physics slightly from last year. "Better AI" meaning, look our guys stand in a line and slam into your guys even better than last year.

These games are a complete copy/paste job, and if calling someone a homo on a game site is what it takes for you to feel better about essentially burning money for a game that is basically identical to the last iteration, I hope you find something more fulfilling to do with your life. People like you are the reason people who appreciate games for more then a form of mindless entertainment get a bad name. Seriously, grow up.

Madden really needs a new physics engine.

And how comes the commentary is so seemless in FIFA compared to Madden? Surely the commentary in Madden should be easier to construct? It seems so jarring whenever they mention a player's name.

About what I expected. Madden needs an overhaul. This is the same game I played two years ago. Incremental additions like minor presentation improvement and collision detection don't make me want to go out and buy Madden. In order to truly bring advancement to the game, EA needs to nail a few things:

Make the be-a-star mode more in depth. You can make all sorts of Sims spinoffs, but can't truly put the player in the shoes of a budding NFL player? Make it a role playing game, with decisions and personality defining choices. Bring the player experience into the homes of the fans, so they can live the dream.

Overhaul the phyics engine. Just do it. Take height, weight, strength, speed, angles, center of gravity, grip, etc into account and produce a solid collision physics system. I'm tired of pre-canned animations.

Give more organization options in franchise mode. Somehow retool the entire mode to make it the ultimate fantasy football engine. That should be a goal.

Any one of the aforementioned would get me to buy Madden again. As it is, I don't feel compelled to buy another retread.

The physics thing is pretty much laughable at this point. Weight and size means nothing. You can put cornerback that weighs 160 pounds at NT if you edit his stats up. I don't care how unrealistically strong a guy is, if he's that small he is NOT overpowering 320lb+ guards.

I agree about the canned animations needing to go as well. They've done a lot of work to eliminate some of the warping and sliding the past few years...but none of that would be an issue if they decided take the leap and do physics. Even though Backbreaker wasn't the greatest game in the world, the collision system worked really well. So it's not impossible, certainly not with the budget that they figure to have.

Because EA hates us. Or something.

Maybe they're afraid of remaking the game, and their traditional fanbase hating it because it's not
Madden and the fans of the original Mutant Leagues hating it because they did some tiny thing wrong.

Or maybe they just hate us.

"$60 roster update har har I'm so clever"

Seriously, no one cares about your worthless cliche'd comment that's been repeated 600 times in every Madden article, commenters.

Besides all that, if the demo is any indication, I don't see how any self respecting gamer can say this year's game is more of the same. The gameplay in the demo was very different from '11, almost like it was in hyperspeed. The game felt a lot more like NCAA 11 than it did Madden 11.

Now granted, for me at least, that's a bad thing (some other people may like it). I think the gameplay has gone downhill since '10, but to say it's just the same is wholly an indication that you don't know wtf you're talking about.

@Vcize You can never win with people who don't actually play the games on sites like Joystiq. I'm stunned by how many fans NFL 2K5 has received over the years, because it's like, yeah, if you guys bought any of those games from 2K1 - 2K5, Visual Concepts/Sega/Take2 would have had the money to make a bid at the NFL license.

Exactly. I'm still playing '10 because I think it has a better flow. It's surprising, but after you play a few dozen hours on one game, try out another edition and you can immediately tell the difference in the way things control and the overall presentation.

Honestly, I enjoy the new features and different gameplay but can't justify a full $60 so I just wait until it drops to a reasonable price.

I agree with you that anyone with a brain could see how different this Madden is from Madden 11(trash) and Madden 10(best Madden so far). I just wish the dorks that's never played Madden would not continue to promote the dumb believe that every year Madden is the same. Especially now and days where we see action title (Assassin Creed) come out with yearly titles.

Yeah, that makes sense. That's why Mass Effect, Batman Arkham Asylum, Mirror's Edge, Splinter Cell, and Bulletstorm are all basically the exact same game, right?

I mean, they all run on the same engine (Unreal Engine 3), so they must be basically the same thing.

@Vcize I'll admit I'm excited for it... the lack of suction should totally change up the gameplay, and I figure I should reward them for finally fixing up the franchise mode - this might be the first Madden for the 360/PS3 generation that has a franchise mode as good as the old one. Or so I'm hoping.

There is a reason that Madden gets pissed on and other sports games, not so much. And it's not just the popularity of Madden, as FIFA is wildly popular worldwide. The game is often good, rarely great.

I buy both titles every year and I enjoy them, but, for me, FIFA has always been a far better game and an example how to do game yearly game releases correctly, even though I like American football more than footie.

@YanDaMan Incredibly presumptuous. Exactly the attitude that ends in serious sports game coverage scoffed at.

You should know by now that sports games are not a genre, but a theme. Truly, Madden is an action RPG. I love RPGs. I love sports games. I love every kind of game possible. I play games, I don't throw them out because of their themes or their genres. There are quality experiences to be had in every regard.
