Torchlight 2 priced at $20, final class revealed

Torchlight 2, the cooperation-friendly sequel to the million-selling dungeon crawler, has been officially priced at $20 by Runic Games. That's the same price as the original Torchlight. which had a far lower profile.
"Everyone who wants to play Torchlight 2 will be able to comfortably afford to do so, and they'll be able to play with their friend online or via a LAN, or play single player offline, all with no further purchase," said Max Schaefer, CEO of Runic Games.
Runic also revealed the fourth and final class in the game, the Embermage, who will join the Berserker, Outlander and Engineer on an obsessive quest for better loot. We're sure they'll save the world along the way or whatever, but it's the loot that's important.
Torchlight 2 is still targeting a 2011 launch.

Going to be funny when this game comes out and D3 still hasn't made it to beta...

Funny how a $20 game will offer more than Diablo 3 ever could. Unless Blizzard miraculously announce offline single player.
Runic, you've made a sale here today. I'd happily pay more for this game, $20 is a bargain.

I like Torchlight and will be getting the second one..but you're pretty bold to say that TL2 will have more than D3 solely because it has offline single player.
The year is 2011...nobody is offline anymore. If you are you're a minority and the reason they make it so you stay online is because of pirating.

Yup piracy that's the reason and good on D3 for requiring the game be always connected. Otherwise everyone on teh internetz would be stealin' their game. CURSE YOU INTRANETZ!
Honestly I can almost let D3 slide because odds are I would never have played it offline myself ........ but I also realize that there are people out there who would have, either by choice or circumstance.

Hello. In just a week, I move to a new apartment where I won't have internet hooked up for two and a half weeks.
You know what I won't be playing? Games with always on DRM.
You know what I will be playing? Torchlight.
Just because "everyone" is online doesn't mean having the option to play offline is unnecessary. Sometimes you just don't have internet.

Yeah definitely the Auction House. If they didn't require an online connection you could just duplicate all the weapons. Duplication really ruins loot games. I'm real tire of people bitching about having to be online. Grow up, we are all online now. If you can't get online then get a job and support yourself. Jeesh.

@maxxgold When you get your paycheck would you be ok with your employer telling you how to spend your money and when to use your money? This is what blizzard is doing with d3. "Hey buy our 60 dollar game but you can only play it while your online. Internet is down? Go play a 99 cent app game. Going on a road trip? Play a 99 cent app game" If you support that you are a sheep.

Sure, I get it. But why not have the ability to make an offline character that can never play multiplayer, with no ability to go online or buy from the auction house for those times when you don't have internet. Sure people could dupe on their single player character, but who would care?
Oh wait, then it would be easy to pirate, and Blizzard would get less people using the RMT auction house, which mens less profits. Oh well.

@Scuffles I never played Diablo 2 offline once... that was in 2000... If you are playing offline you aren't doing it right.

Its not even that. Its the simple fact that I'm paying $60 to OWN a game, not rent it. Renting can have all the terms and conditions you want. But if I OWN something, I intend to use it when, where, and however the hell I please. Its that simple.
The argument that a person already has internet is tangent at best, strawman at worst. The point is about ownership.
In all honesty, if this is really the route Blizzard is taking, DIII should be f2p with a monthly sub hybrid option (ala LOTRO or AoC). Then always-on is justified. Otherwise, they can suck it. My money will happily go elsewhere.

So, playing single player on a laptop out of wifi range is "not doing it right?"
Playing offline in a game that deletes your character after 2 weeks of inactivity is "not doing it right?"
If playing Diablo alone on the go is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Where does an XBLA/PSN release stand for this? I could totally get my wife to play this with me but it will be a much easier sell on a console/couch.

@Vcize I'm pretty sure they've discussed an XBLA/PSN port, but at the moment they're focusing on getting the PC version out with the OSX version not too far behind. Torchlight 2 was already delayed with its predecessor's console ports.

Kind of excited for this. I didn't care for Diablo or D2 at all-- for the most part the whole "loot-based RPG" thing never really struck a chord with me. But playing through Torchlight (it was one of my first purchases when Steam hit the Mac), I found that I could see what people like about it. It lets you get into the game and enjoy the gameplay without having to worry about whether or not you're doing something egregiously wrong.
I'll second the request for info on when TL2 hits the 360, and add a question as to whether the Mac version will be a simultaneous release with the PC version.

I will playing this instead of Diablo3, Blizzard has ruined the Diablo frachise for me with their poor choice of always on DRM. Thank you Runic for the first Torchlight which was amazing, and now following it up with what looks to be a great next step.
As Apsac said, $20 is a steal for this game, looking forward to many hours playing with friends.

No, you're right. The staggering amount of content provided by D3 and the item marketplace (which is a legitimate reason for a persistent online connection so you cant dupe items) won't match up to T2. Unless of course you count the content itself. Then yes. By a wide margin will D3 offer more value and gameplay. But you have to be online. They made the same mistake with WoW. Can't believe you need to be online to play that game...

I LOVE Torchlight. i have about 100 hours into it. Just keep playing unlimited Dungeon. Can't wait for TL2 . Awesome game. $20 is Incredible. Day 1 purchase. Steam will eventually have it for $10. That's what I got teh 1st one for.

Ok, lets put this whole offline/always on thing into perspective:
Yes, many people that buy D3 will require to have an internet connection, and yes, many people in the U.S. and Canada have internet. So this part is nto really a problem. What is a problem is this: SC2 requires a constant connection to Battle.Net. I can count numerous times I wanted to play the campaign and Battle.Net was down for maintenence, so no single-player for me, had to play something else until b.net was back online the next morning. That part sucks. I like to play my RPG's alone first, then join in on the Multiplayer. You can bet your @$$ that B.Net will go down for maintenance a lot when D3 is out.
So, good on you Runic for making offline single-player. Sale! However, I will also get D3 when it comes out in a year or two (called it!).

Given that it won't come out for XBLA anyway (due to size restrictions), I'll be preordering on Steam as soon as it comes up.

Posted: Aug 26th 2011 12:42PM CountNoobula said
@Torticoli I would make the argument that D3 might be a 'better quality game'. Have you seen the rune system? Looks nuts. However, I know where your coming from with Blizzards Deuchebaggery tactics as of late.
This game at $20 is a steal, and I will buy and play the crap out of it. But D3 will sell due to it being Diablo, and Blizzard does make good games, aside from acting like ass-hats.

I was going to buy it regardless. I think I picked up the first one for either $5 or $10 on a sale, but I wouldn't mind paying full price for this one.
Of course in 3 or 4 months when it's on sale for 50% off I'll probably be kicking myself...
