Oh hey, this game looks kind of fun, let's take a look at the dev page her--

"Orson Scott Card writes for Firefall!"

NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE

Never mind!

@Nenene I had absolutely no idea who this Orson fellow was and why he could, single-handedly, stop someone from purchasing a game. Five minutes of google-fu and yeah...ok, I see the point.

I don't know if it will stop me from purchasing the game but I can understand why it might stop others. It's an interesting dilemma. Should we always stop and consider who might be recieving money from what we purchase? I think if we were to scrutinise every member of every staff team in every studio we'd always find someone whose opinions we vehemently disagree with.

What a pickle.

Orson Scott Card imo wrote one of the greatest books ever, Ender's Game. Why does the prevent you from buying the game?

@ployer It's not about the quality of the writing, it's about the controversial opinion of the author.

Kind of a pointless stance to take. If you dug deeply enough through the psyches of any of your favorite games' dev teams, I can guarantee you that you'd find at least one person (at the very least) whose political, sexual, or social views clashed with your own to the point of offending your sensibilities. People got opinions, yo.

@Nenene A direct quote from Red 5's CEO that I think is relevant: "I hope that the author of the original article on gay gamer can separate Red 5's creative work, which is the entirety of Firefall, from the contributions of one author (of two authors...his daughter is involved) to a manga about the game and some story concepts we have incorporated into Firefall."

Seriously, it's a free game, you don't have to support one person to enjoy the works of many.

Official CEO post on their stance on the subject: http://www.firefallthegame.com/community/threads/pr-issue-for-firefall.6475/page-2#post-205097

@freaparn That's the point I was trying to make: it's difficult to get pious over a single person when there are many others, in many other games, who share the outlook. I agree that it's probably pointless, but people who do react to individuals like this possibly do it for a more symbolic gesture, I don't know.

Your first mistake is at all caring about what someone in CLDS thinks. Believing in a religion based on some guy finding magical golden plates in the woods automatically discredits any opinion that person could ever have about anything real.

@freaparn The stance is not pointless when OSC openly uses his incomes to push his agendas of oppressing peoples' rights. When the biggest voice around is your dollars, you should think about where you let them be heard.
The plus is the game is F2P, so one could avoid dropping money into said pockets by side-stepping any purchases. For this I am glad, because I've had my eye on it some time, and I am looking forward to it.

So... Youre boycotting his boycott of prejudice with your own prejudice? People can be stupid and still be worth talking to, or being around. Just because he's a homophobe doesn't mean he isn't skilled or have prowess in other regards. Some people can't help thier indoctrinations too, so just remember... which is why I don't just write you off, and am actually trying to explain why I think you should reconsider.

It will be free to play yes.
While there will be some paid-for extras, those are according to the developers aesthetic such as skins, or convenience like double xp items.
The entire content will be playable for free.

For me it isn't his views, and constant push of his religion, but his writing is just horrible. I've been reading sci-fi since i was 6, and started with people like clark and asimov. This guy is just not a very good writer, or at least not to my taste of writing at all.

@(Unverified) Yeah, someone who's won multiple Hugos (in fact the ONLY writer to ever win both the Hugo and Nebula in consecutive years) is clearly a bad writer.
You might dislike him as a person, you might even dislike him as a writer, but the opinions of those that care most about science fiction writing would disagree with you.

Most games end up focusing on PVP eventually when their well of content runs dry. Just like most F2P games who claim their Cash shop won't effect game play usually break that promise and then claim they said no such thing.....

Such is the way of the world.

The world "boss" sounds great, but I would like to see that in Firefall also in dungeons or instances, not only in the open world. The game is going to expand a lot in the future, so it's probably to early to say what's going to happen (and also, they keep secrets very well at Red5). I know it's not an MMO, but they do have elements from MMOs.

Very nice preview, thanks! By the way, beta is just a few days ago and all you have to do is signup at www.firefallthegame.com to be selected to test the game in the future!

Oh boy some things around here I would have hoped not to run into again. Well anyway what has drawn me to Firefall was mostly in the gameplay itself and from what is read, Red 5, who are the ones making this game, is trying hard to ensure that there is never a dull moment with the open-world gameplay.

Overlooking OSC is going to be hard? What do you think, half the missions will be kill and hunt down some gays? -_-
Seriously, I have several gay friends who'll be playing this game just as much as I will. If you don't agree with OSC, write him a post card instead of not trying out a free to play game. He helped with the lore. Nowhere in the lore is gay marriage covered, mmmmkay? -_-

Back on topic: very good write-up, sad to see it semi go to waste on half of these comments...

I have never seen so omnipresent a "booth" at PAX than Firefall. They damn near dominated the entire area before the sky bridge between the two main publisher/demo hubs on the 4th floor. I think their set-up for this single game was bigger than either Microsoft's or Sony's. Ads everywhere too, even in lights swirling around your feet on the floor. There must be some serious bank behind this game.

Its not like Orson is going to shove his political agenda down your throat in Firefall, don't ruin an awesome game for yourself just because you disagree with the person who penned the story. This gameplay just seems amazing though I'm looking forward to having a try at it soon.

Nice article, sounds like a great experience.

"It has class-based shooting, customizable loadouts, loot, strategy, a [dynamic] persistent [open] world, character creation and a focus on co-op, PvE gameplay. " add to this that it's skill and team based, free to play with no power-gear or game changing mechanics in the cash shop, a community active and oriented development team, jetpacks for that vertical dimension of combat and PvP tournaments for the more hardcore gamer you have about 15 reasons why this is the game I'm most excited for.

And if you guys want to piss all that away because the story writer has "weird" political views or you didn't like his writing style, I laugh, and then pity you, for it must really suck never being happy.

I personally have really enjoyed what the Firefall story has shown so far and I'm excited to hear more.

So, cartoony graphics + shooting = Borderlands? If that's the case, then Borderlands is just ripping off XIII. Someone alert David Duchovny!

Or, is it the loot that makes it a Borderlands ripoff?

The comparisons are super slim, unless I somehow overlooked the resource gathering and jetpack portions of Borderlands.

If anything, this is Tribes + Warhammer Online.

But seriously. Tried that game at PAX, they literally had an employee pretending to be a rabid fan telling whoever would listen how great the game was.

It's a pretty mediocre game that somehow got an enormous marketing budget.

Discounting thousands of hours of work from the team over one writers actions (and who really cares what writers do) seems really silly.

The gameplay is so inspired by Borderlands that I could almost forget which game I'm watching a video for, and that's exactly what I want. Borderlands had mmo-gunplay down pat, and I'm dying to give firefall a spin.

If it sucks, so be it, but I'm willing to throw money at them just to TRY it, and if it's free, what have I got to lose.

The Chosen invasions is one of the particular points of this game that i find most alluring. As well as the Thumper defense missions. Back when i played wow, this was the factor that was missing. large scale fights defending against hoards of foes! Not going into a cave and pulling one enemy at a time for hours on end... thats why i quit that game before i got to level 40. Firefall looks to be a massive adrenaline rush and i cant wait!
