It turns out that Walmart's "rollback" of the Xbox 360 4GB Kinect bundle, dropping it to $249 ($50 off its current price), was an error. A notice posted by Walmart acknowledges "the price was mistakenly labeled as a rollback," a term the retailer uses for permanent price drops.
The silver lining here is that Walmart will honor the $249 price at retail until Monday, September 5, or while supplies last. There will be no rainchecks on the offer.
Microsoft informed us last week that it does not discuss pricing plans in advance, but that "Walmart made an independent decision to implement this temporary price cut."
[Thanks, Todd.]

I always wonder if these "mistakes" are actually marketing tactics.

Funny, they dropped the 3DS before it officially dropped, now this.

Of course they are. Wal-Mart has those adverts printed 4-6 months in advance.

Speaking from someone who does ads for a major retailer, circulars actually are only made about 3 weeks in advance. Basically, print and delivery time is about a 2 week process if not quicker (especially during 4th quarter). Signs that are placed in the store that accompany the ad are made just 2 weeks prior, with about 2-3 days to print, and 3 days to be sent to stores.
If it sounds crazy and frantic, trust me it is.

Ah, good times. One of my first real jobs was creating flyers for a large hardware chain. Crazy and frantic are not even strong enough words to describe the stress and insane deadlines!

I still find it really hard for me to justify that amount of money on a console with only 4GB of storage space. An extra hundred dollars for a 250GB hard drive is more than worth it if this is the minimum spec. Especially for how much Microsoft sells the drives separately.

Shop around. The $50 savings can go to a 250 GB drive on Amazon:

You could always put them on a USB flash drive and transfer.

@badr Just buy a normal Xbox 360 transfer cable, it's compatible with the S model and you don't even need the software disc. Thats what I did when I got mine.

It's not an Apple product. You don't throw the old system into a burning vat of oil when the new one comes out.
THE FUTURE IS NOW!

I picked up the 250gb this weekend at best buy and it came with a $75. gift card. Tough to beat that deal

This is decent of them to honor this price. They could have just as easily called it a price mistake and said "too bad so sad".

Knowing that this is a time-limited thing makes me want to go get one now, sort of ($99 Touchpad conditioning at work!). When a Kinect sensor alone is $150, this makes some degree of sense, even for a guy who doesn't really *need* another Xbox...
But I will probably just find a refurb/open box Kinect somewhere instead; no matter how much I like the design of the new consoles (and I do, very much)-- it sill plays the same games and does the same stuff as my old Elite.

Hang in there, 320 HD systems are floating about... and past history shows it will most likely soon be a new standard. Also if anybody wants to exchange their brains with a pygmy goat and see what life is like through that perspective, let me know.

Sorry, I'm tired of RROD. No more Xbox for me. I almost won't even take one for free - maybe I'll take one just cause I still have games collecting dust on my shelf because I can't play them.
Posted: Aug 29th 2011 12:30PM Rawrnosaurous said
@nossy Yea if you don't want them send them my way, the 360 is really kind of essential to me gaming wise. It feels a lot like the ps2 did last gen, if you played videogames you inherently had to have a ps2 because so many games were brought to that system. It's why whenever my 360 dies or whatever I will run out and buy a new one, sure I could get pissed that it died but considering how much time I use it, and how many different games and stuff I use it for. I'm pretty sure it's worth a second or third buy.

I know motion control tech might not appeal to a guy named "fatguy", but this price is actually quite reasonable for the hardware being offered, and people interested in moving body appendages to have fun will appreciate the mistake.

Screw Wal-Mart. They only want you to think it is a 'mistake' and a super great deal so you will spend money at that anti-American store. You can get a 360 cheaper all over this week and without claiming it was a 'mistake' in YOUR favor.
All from Sunday's Ads
Target - Kinect 4GB 360 for $299 + 60 GC
Best Buy - 250 GB 360 for $299 + $75 GC

It's still a ripoff without a hard drive. :(
160GB PS3 - $249
4GB Xbox 360 with Kinect - $249
Hey Microsoft, good luck convincing your consumers to buy an extra $100 hard drive just to play certain games.
