This is the lowest and bitchiest review I've seen yet, other reviews I've seen so far are as follows;
8,8,8,8.5, and 9.

@Cletus VanDamme Key words "may have". It's an opinion from one person, so you shouldn't write the game off so quickly.

Reviews are opinion, we should expect them to vary. No review is right or wrong, but hopefully the review should help you decide if the game is right or wrong *for you*.

I wish I didn't have to constantly explain that to the gaming world. No one gets it!

Seems like a great concept that's just been poorly done and is hampered by bugs.

@SpanWolf How is it "bitchy"? When you read a review you are establishing a relationship with the reviewer. Most of them here at Joystiq have similar taste as I do so it usually informs me rather well. You don't like the review who cares, no problem, find another outlet to trust but they aren't going to change the review because you say it's "bitchy" frankly I think it was a fair assesment of the game based on the observations of THIS reviewer. Man, you sound like the kind of guy who whined when he didn't get cookies with his milk.

Much better Review at IGN

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/119/1192319p1.html

Apparently this game is hard and you have to play together so it's no surprise that joysitq didn't give it a good review. Remember these were the same people that blasted L4D for being to hard. If a game is challenging then Joystiq gets easily frustrated. The new school of gamers don't like challenges they like to follow an arrow around and have everything spoon fed to them. While I do agree with most Joysitq reviews the reviewer was way to hard on this game.

New school of gamers? Justin is around 30 and, like me, among the first generation to grow up with a gaming console in the house for their entire lives. If you want to tell me that the original NES games that I was playing as a small child were easy, with conventions like going all the way back to the beginning of the game if you died, then I would hate to hear of the kind of games you played!

IMHO, I think most of the uproar in this comment thread is just due to a lot of people getting sucked in by the promise that this game was showing. He specifically points out that the game literally broke on several occasions. If this happens in a game you've developed in 2011, you. are. doing. it. wrong.

While I share Justin's distaste for the style of inventory management that this game apparently employs, I will concede that this is subjective and their are probably plenty of people out there who love the OCD-itching nature of constantly picking up new stuff and comparing it all.

One last point, concerning the need to work together with someone else for this game (and some others) to be fun: If a company is selling a game with a single player mode, it needs to function properly and be fun in single player mode. Likewise, a company should assume that the reviewer will opt to play the single player campaign solo, thus its quality will be reflected in the review. If your game sucks in single player mode, why not sell it as a multi-player only game, so that all reviews are reflecting the co-op that is apparently so fantastic?

The problem, IMO, isn't that Joystiq is too hard on games - it's that some people are just too easy on games that don't work as promised.

To be honest i NEVER follow what the reviews of joystick said, and 95% i find out i was right..... i don´t know what happens with joystick but they always give scores that are waaaaaaay too low to games that end up being not as bad as they said, the two biggest examples that i remember right now are duke nuke em which i had a good amount of fun with, and velvet assassin, a game that joystick said they couldn´t finish it because it was sooo bad, well i finished the game and i can said that it´s not a masterpiece but it wasn´t as bad as joystick said, so this one well, i´ll follow my past experience and i´ll go to steam right now.... let´s see if it´s another one that fits the "if joystick hates it buy it it´ll be fun" rule.

@Hunter141072 Joystiq. Also, Velvet Assassin was horrible from a gameplay perspective. Absolutely horrible. Joystiq and I are not the only ones to think so. Plenty of terrible reviews.

This is just an opinion though. You are certainly within your rights to have a different one. I just don't understand the "this review is WRONG!" mentality.

It was L4D2 and that game was horseshit on consoles. My friends and I played the original on 360 and completed all but one of the campaigns on expert. We picked up L4D2 one weekend and the first level we play there's a boomer, a smoker, and a spitter waiting right outside the safehouse and no more than 10 steps later a horde spawns and then a tank comes. That was on normal.

Well, maybe because that´s the same that they said of duke nukem and guess what?? i enjoyed it too, and i was not the only one, duke was on the top charts, we can argue alll day long about the game if it was old if the only reason why people buy it was because of the delay-legacy it had, the point is i enjoy it a lot, and a lot of people did, velvet as i said it was not a good game, that´s true but many of the flaws that it had are flaws that games like splinter cell have up to this day, and saying that they couldn´t finish it for me it was more the result of laziness than a good review, it´s not attitude dude, it´s a fact so far... but don´t take my word for granted let´s check dead island, or at least I will, if it happens again then something is very weird with the reviews of joystick....upss!!!! sorry!!! i mean JOYSTIQ, sorry some purists get really made for that. :D

Personally, when McElroy whines about something I know I'll think the opposite and really enjoy whatever it is he's carping about.

Simply pre-order from a third party such as Greenman Gaming instead. You save money (I got Deus Ex 3 for $28 from them) and, if the game is shit, you simply resell the key that they send you without activating it.

@freaparn I haven't read the L4D2 review but this one doesn't simply make a vague statement like "it's too hard". It specifically goes into issues with the game. Now, maybe these don't bother you, maybe you even like spending 20 minutes digging through every container and shuffling your inventory, but the reviewer obviously doesn't and he's got every right to. And how do you excuse bad AI and pathfinding? Or is that something you enjoy as well.

Here is the Left 4 Dead 2 review. They gave it a 3/5 by Chris Grant, the Editor in Cheif here. They gave this game a score after they implemented the Star rating so it wasn't there with the original review. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/review-left-4-dead-2/

I was planning on renting either way, since it seemed like it may end up being a love it or hate it game. The reviews are pretty much confirming that thought. 13 positive, 11 mixed, 1 negative on Metacritic right now.
