Very unexpected. My interest in this game, in a manner similar to the games described plot, just went from zero to extreme in five minutes.

Thanks for putting this game on my radar Jordan. I wouldn't have given it a second glance if not for your review.

Now to find my wallet...

Very unexpected because they're complete off about the driving in this game. Seriously they through realism out the window with the coma concept so why hang on to it for the driving so much that it makes handling the cars infuriatingly BAD? The Nitro boost is nearly useless for it's intended purpose too.

Sure it's pretty, but a bad game is still bad.

No truer words have . . . well you know what I mean.

Both Driver:SF and Space Marines are two games that I have spent the entire year thinking they were going to suck . . . and then I played the demos, and was completely blown away by both. They literally shot from zero to 'must buy', in the time it took me to go through the demos.

Factor in Resistance 3, Gears 3, Crimson Alliance, and the Team Ico Collection, this is the best September in almost a decade.

They're not off in the least. The game is loads of fun, and reminiscent of what made the first on the series great. Not perfect, but this reviewer indeed "gets it."

If the publisher is Ubisoft, run away.

If the publisher is EA, read the fine print it may be reasonable.

If the publisher is anyone else, read the fine print.

So, get it for the PS3 since the PC version is likely to have shit in your face DRM and be a shoddy port.

Driver is going to have the Online to Launch DRM.
Not as annoying as Always-Online DRM. I didn't have problem with it in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood.

I would say with the way things have been going lately, don't even consider getting Ubisoft games on the PC.

And isn't the PC version delayed anyways? For "technical issues"...

Is Joystiq trying to make people broke? A good review for Driver: San Fran, Resistance 3 and Dead Island....maybe good ones for Warhammer 40K Space Marine & Disgaea 4.

Is it the end of the year yet?

3 Stars is good, not great, not awful. Certainly not run away.

3 Stars, I.E average means RTFA and UYFB (Use Your Fing Brain) to decide if that game falls into your liking or not.

I agree with you completely. I'm tired of 3 stars, a 60 or 70, etc. being shit on by the elitist gaming populace. This isn't grade school, you aren't a total and utter failure if you reach or barely exceed a mid-range score. I've had plenty of fun with games that didn't reach enormous critical acclaim - you gotta try the games, man, not just peep the score and move on.

Yeah, 3 stars doesn't mean the game's bad. If you stay away from the PC version, it might actually be great.

What I'm hearing about the game is basically it's "Fallout 3 + zombies + game-breaking bugs" so Techland really freakin' loved Fallout 3.

Well, good for them. Driver has never been my type of game, but it's nice to see that they can come up with something as ridiculous as "Shifting" and pull it off.

I disagree with the fundamentals being so strong if the demo is any indication. The general handling in the demo was terrible & turning was pretty difficult.

That said, the demos were still quite a bit of fun, especially the multiplayer demo. I don't really have the money so I'm debating whether or not to pick this up but I definitely would like to.

Thanks you for saying it too. The handling is ATROCIOUS. Listen People don't take a single person or review's word for it. Try the DEMO first, dont let a review trick you into buying something you may very well hate.

Tried the demo, never had a bit of trouble turning my car. Maybe I'm just used to playing a variety of different types of racing games, but after a few mins, I got the feel for it, and it was fun.

@Osmium

It has nothing to do with being on the high horse. I'm guessing he's referring to their PC treatment (they seem to treat console gamers fine). But if that's the case, then I ABSOLUTELY understand his not wanting to buy this game. Have you played a Ubisoft game on the PC in the last few years? Constant internet connection, poor optimization, bugs, awful controls (in some cases), oh, and all of that usually comes between a month to a year AFTER the console versions have been released. Seriously, have you ever played a Ubisoft PC game? It's not worth it. The amount of stuff you have to put up with (even if the game is still pretty good, which is usually the case with Ubisoft's games) just doesn't cut it. When there are games coming out pretty much every week soon (for example, this week has 4 games, so far all of which have been getting decent, to awesome reviews), spending $50-$70 on a game that is going to frustrate you is ridiculous. Save your money for the games that have been handled properly, and have been made by the people who don't want you to commit suicide.

Also most developers (unless already legally obligated or eaten up) choose their publishers. This dev obviously didn't but others do and they need to say no to Ubisoft.

If a dev chooses Ubisoft they'll have a much more difficult time making me purchase their game. If Ubisoft would just get a brain and stop using DRM, it would be lesser of an issue.

Ubisoft still cheapens out on PC ports either way. Pub or dev. So that's another reason to be leery of them.

Remember when EA was on the brink and barely made it back from madness? (They're not perfect but they were much worse) Ubisoft has jumped off that cliff, I'm afraid.

I don't see them going back anytime soon and they'll sooner ditch PC than ditch the money they SPEND on DRM that's bullshit.

@Osmium....Whoa, the guy was just delivering his opinion , there definetly is no need to start blasting him with profanity. Unless you wanted to come across like an angry d-bag. Personally, I thought the Driver SF demo was just average, the only racing/driving kick i needed this summer i got from Dirt 3, which was outstanding IMO. Between the DRM, and Ubisoft continually snubbing their North American audience, I'm pretty tired of their schtick.

I just love how the screenshot gallery is filled with homages to great '70s car chase movies and TV series -- Gone in 60 Seconds (the H.B. Halicki original!), Smokey and the Bandit, Dukes of Hazzard, Vanishing Point...wow! Combined with this review's unusually (for a Driver game) high marks, I think this just went onto my must-buy list.

The handling my not be 100%, but its pretty close to being realistic. Mash the gas in any car with power, and crank the wheel around turns, and its going to feel loose.

Demo was terrible. Everything was terrible about it. Washed out visuals? Check. Loose driving model with spotty physics? Check. Cornball story, voice acting and dialogue? Check. Avoiding this one entirely.

@KungFuChaosNinja I have to with you, and I am surprised it scored so well. But, maybe the demo is just a terrible representation of the game. The voices were the most annoying part as they keep repeating the same lines every time you crash into something.
It was moderately fun to drive I suppose, but based on the demo i would give it 2.5, I certainly wouldn't spend my money on it even after reading the review.
