Joystiq has been busy lately. Seems like a new review every six hours.

In any case - and it might be just me - the reviewers should still assume the reader doesn't know anything about the 4th installment of a not-so-popular franchise before spitting information about the game. Just a little background check wouldn't hurt. I can assume that Tropico 4 is somewhat like SimCity, but I'm gonna have to hit wikipedia for conformation. This review, summarized: "Joke, joke, joke, it adds x, y and z to the Tropico formula". Yeaaaah... And what that formula would be?

Quality over quantity. Remember that motto? Should be appliable to Joystiq reviews as well.

"Tropico 4 (...) is a construction and management simulation video game, which focuses around a city building simulation."
From wikipedia.

There, I fixed it.

@TheShaper Where you getting not-so-popular franchise from? Must be popular enough to be up to number 4.

It's no Resident Evil or Halo... Of course, it's not like I've never heard of it but a little introduction to the core mechanics wouldn't hurt, the whole review was written based on the assumption that the reader played the previous installment.

Interestingly enough, the same review says "For new players to the series, Tropico 4 is a great place to start".

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I was the only one who thought that. I was pretty confused.

@TheShaper Yes, it's an unpopular franchise because its on its fourth game. Tropico is a pretty damn beloved franchise man. Most PC gamers know about it. Just because you aren't a PC gamer and you haven't heard of it doesn't mean its obscure.

The entire review is hilarious. It's one of the most creative reviews they've put out. This is the perfect example of quality over quantity.

The Steam version comes with two more islands. Isla Nublar, and something else.

I want to know how they worked THAT out. For those who don't know, Isla Nublar is the name of the island in Jurassic Park.

@Rain

Generally speaking, trademarked names aren't used without money being involved.

And seeing as this is a president/ruler themed sim with a tropical setting with no other connections, this seemed an odd thing.

And I don't know if the video game rights to Jurassic Park currently being at TellTale Games has anything to do with it.

I'll pick this up when it's one sale, just like I did with Tropico 3.

It'll be hard to hold off, though, because I loved T3 and despite T4 being very similar, I played and enjoyed the demo far more than I thought I would have.

I really liked T3, and I found myself enjoying the demo of T4 far more than I thought I would have. The changes are subtle and minor, but whatever they did the game feels far more fun and cohesive then the third game.

I don't know if it's just me, but for some reason the graphics in Tropico 3 look better than T4.

I would also like to add that Tropico 4 is a great game, but truly feels like a re-skinned Tropico 3 with a few more features.

I loved Tropico 3 and put dozens of hours of it, but I just couldn't get into the campaign. This time around, all I want to play is the campaign because it feels so polished. Even though it's not terribly new, everything works so well and that's what matters, I'd say.

So... I played and liked Tropico and Tropico 2. I've been meaning to play 3, but because of this should I just skip it and go straight to 4?

Yes, 4 is basically 3.5. It's almost exactly like Absolute power expansion.

Joystick confused me. It's actually "Revolución." No wonder, I had no idea what that meant.
