Science picks Dead Space 2 as 360's scariest game
71
You could rely on your friends, game critics or helpful GameStop sales associates to tell you which games are scary, but that's so two-thousand-and-late. We're sticking with science, thanks to this helpful feature from Gamasutra, which used player feedback and biometric data to rate not only the most frightening games, but their most horrifying moments. [Update: The study itself was conducted by Vertical Slice, so if you're looking for dream jobs in the research field, that's where we'd start.)
A victor was picked, but some of the study's other conclusions were more interesting. For instance: The threat of combat was typically scarier than combat itself. Also, gore, while provocative, wasn't, particularly frightening. The game that understood those concepts the best? Well, that would be Dead Space 2, which took the brass ring over Condemned, Alan Wake and Resident Evil 5.
Presumably, Sherlock Holmes: Nemesis was not in the running.

I thought the original Dead Space was scarier personally. That one necromorph on Chapter 5 (not giving spoilers) freaked the hell out of me, even on my fourth play through.

@APCMice I agree. It really wasn't that scary, more jumpy than anything else.

I had a game night with my buddies a few months back and we chose Dead Space 1 as our game of choice. I'm a baby when it comes to scary things, so it was interesting for me to play :P
When we got to the necromorph in Chapter 5 you mentioned, we made my friend Rob play because none of us wanted to do it. He had to do the part where you're stuck in the room with it about 15 times over before the got out xD

Good to know. I'll be avoiding this game for the sake of my undies. Friends have said the FEAR games are pretty scary, too. I'm not brave enough to check.

@FlashJS Try F3AR less scary more combat but still scary enough. Great online to

FEAR 1 - Scary and balls-out awesome
FEAR 2 - Fun, but not as scary (still had its moments).
I'm jonesing to give FEAR 3 a spin

@FuriousMailman None of the FEAR games were scary. Pretty much the only game in the last few years that legitimately deserves to be called scary is Amnesia.

I saw it coming when I read RE5's flair text:
"YOU DON'T HAVE TO FACE FEAR ALONE"
...Uh, pretty sure you do, RE5. That's kinda what makes it scary.

I honestly didn't find Dead Space 1 or 2 scary. Don't get me wrong I loved the hell out of them and thought they were great action games, I just didn't find them scary.
I think I've been spoiled by playing Amnesia before I got around to Dead Space. That game set the bar too high for horror games for me.

Too many jump scares for my liking, and sadly that was the only scary thing about it. I prefer the creepy anticipatory atmosphere scares.

Bioshock scared the crap out of me for a while, but eventually i got over it (around the point where you get the ability to sense where the Houdini's will appear), and didn't even flinch for the rest of the game.

RE5? Yeah, right. They lost all credibility even offering up that game.
But out of the list, Condemned 1.

I have played Dead Space 1&2 and Alan Wake. Personally, I thought both
Dead Spaces were equally scary, and I would have been surprised if Dead Space 2 had not won.
P.S. the Sherlock Holmes video was 100000000000x more scary then Dead Space 2

I know it's a joke but I think Ilomilo or Viva Pinata would have made better punchlines considering they actually are 360 games.
And I would be better off not making smart-ass comments.

but Dead Space isn't not even a horror series. -.-
This is what happens when a genre isn't supported enough. You have to pick out games from other genres to fill in the Horror line.
Thank The Gaming God for Indie Developers. Just wished high-end developers would support the horror genre as well.

Man, Condemned was way scarier. People didn't even wanna be in the same room when I was playing it, you're just constantly paranoid that you're about to get beaten over the head from behind.
Posted: Sep 8th 2011 9:03PM Talisman said
@ouenwoof While I'd say Amnesia is the scariest game made to date, Condemned should have beaten out Dead Space 2 EASILY on that study. And I wholeheartedly believe it would have, had they done any of the levels in the second half of the game, and not the first, which has NOTHING on the later levels.

@ouenwoof That was my first game for the 360 and is still to me the scariest game I have ever played, even after almost 6 years of playing it... I still have moments in my life remember parts of the game that just messes with me. I only played it in the dark, by myself and with 5.1. ( probably why I won't play another scary game) =-P

Well Dead Space 2 had the most squeamish scene I have played in years, directing the needle into the eye is pretty harrowing. In terms of the most scary game on 360 I would have gone with Condemned since Amnesia: The Dark Descent isn't on 360.

Alan Wake captivated me start to finish. Probably the best game I've ever played in terms of keeping me interested start to finish. That said, I wouldn't have even thought about putting it in a "scariest game" competition.

Pikmin 1 was scarier for me at ten years old because you only had a limited amount of days. Rushing back to the spaceship at night, trying to wager how much loot you can get away with without leaving innocent pikmin behind to get murdered. Very tense.

No way... what a shame. I think DS games in general tried too hard to be scary, and it just wasn't. Especially t hose parts in 2 where his girlfriend "haunts" him. That was ridiculously annoying "HEAR ME TALK IN A RASPY LOUD VOICE TALKING ABOUT PAIN AND PAST". It just didn't work. Condemned would have been a much better choice (heck even Deadly Premonition was scarier). Dead Space is a fine action game... but it's just not that scary.

@Foetoid I know its not a game, but Kinect should have won. Then again it seems many weren't afraid to spend $149 on a dance central apparatus :)
On a serious note, I think people found the first one scarier since the second was much more action packed.
