This will come to NA. It has to. Right? Someone tell me it's coming!

@Uncle Jesse Level 5's the one doing the actual localization, and held a poll of all their games that wished to be localized. They said the one in 1st place would definitely be localized, and the other 2 would be considered. Layton VS Phoenix is at 60% for first place with everything else in the low 20s or lower. It's going to be localized.

Rats. Now I have to get a 3DS.
Friendly tip: I usually say polygonal when I want to easily communicate the use of 3D models as opposed to use of stereoscopic visuals. But that's just me.

Worst case scenario we'll have to import, but it's pretty likely that this will get localized.

That said, CAN'T WAIT.

@DarkKingSilvers Considering the 3DS isn't region free, importing is kind of a big deal.

@DarkKingSilvers Games are region locked on 3DS. Level-5 has already been promised to localize. I wonder if they'll get Ben Judd to voice Phoenix again.

I've decided that even if I don't have a 3DS by the time this comes out, I'm going to preorder it. And own it without a 3DS.

Did the Layton games ever turn into the puzzle games I thought they were supposed to be? From what I played of the first game, it was just an interactive riddle book with only a few actual puzzles thrown in here and there.

@soniccar It has more puzzles than riddles.

If you mean you thought it was going to be like a point-click adventure, then no, it never did get like that, sorry; you were misinformed. The gameplay is entirely walking around, talking to people, clicking on things and then solving a totally unrelated puzzle to progress. Luckily, this happens to be bizarrely awesome.

(If you mean all the puzzles are riddles then you're just wrong, only a small minority are riddles. There are mazes, logic puzzles, 3d shape puzzles, annoying move-blocks-around puzzles, etc etc etc. So I'm guessing you meant the above.)

About this game - for some reason I had the impression that (a) it had already come out in Japan, and (b) was not very good. Luckily it seems like that was some kind of really bizarre bad dream... (I need to stop eating cheese just before I go to bed.)

I hope it'll be good, but I'm a bit disappointed that the characters are 3D-rendered. At least the 'Professor Layton vs' part means it's very likely to be licensed - unfortunately it seems like Phoenix Wright games don't sell any more, which is really depressing :(

If you're referring to puzzle as in the puzzle-genre like Tetris... then just get Henry Hatsworth.

I played the first game until you go searching for a cat. At that point in the game, it seemed like it was 2 riddles for every puzzle. The riddles really drained any fun I was having. Also, what the heck was up with the optical illusions that you need to measure to solve(stupid hat brim)? How did those make it in? So they never ditched the riddles?

The "riddles" that you keep mislabelling are the entire point of the goddamn franchise.

I'm not mislabeling anything. They are RIDDLES. That is what they are. In a riddle, there can be many answers, but you have to guess which the person that made it used. If that is the point of the whole franchise, as you say, then that is a very stupid franchise. It is like being in the old Adam West Batman show, trying to answer the Riddler's ridiculous riddles.

Well the first game was about a million years ago so I don't really remember it, but I think there were only a handful of riddles in it - as in, where the game tells you a riddle and you then have to write in a one-word answer using the handwriting recognition.

I looked up a walkthrough to check:

http://wikicheats.gametrailers.com/Professor_Layton_and_the_Curious_Village_%28DS%29/Walkthrough

Of the first 20 puzzles, it looks like one (010) is a riddle. I think the ratio overall, and for newer games, is probably less than one in twenty (but I'm certainly not going to research it). Don't actually remember any riddles in the last game but there may have been some...

Can't wait for this but let me get in my requisite bitching, regardless:

Why make a somewhat crappy 3D engine for 2D characters? So it can be more "3D" GREAT! do it freaking right. The 3DS certainly could make these characters more polished.

Or, you know, do something CRAZY and keep it 2D art that's just high res. CRAZY! I know!

I mean it still seems just dialog driven so I see no need to use barely adequate 3D graphics for for traditionally 2D games.

Hmm, nope still feels like bitching for the sake of it and I'd take it on 3DS over DS purely because I was already suckered in to the 3DS.

For goodness' sake, when are we finally going to get Professor Layton on PS3? It would be awesome to see the drawing/animation style in 1080p!

The PS3 doesn't really suit the gameplay of Professor Layton.

Even so, you can experience the amazing animation style in 1080p in the form of the (rather good) Professor Layton film that was released over here next year.

I believe it's due out in the United States next month.

Phoenix is in your 3DS, poking out your eyeballs.

Blah, I hope the 3D is confined to the exploration/trial parts. Part of the reason why I liked the Professor Layton games was because of the gorgeous animated cutscenes, if they made those 3D then it would only hurt it.
