Story? Did you play Ninja Gaiden 2? If you thought there was a story there then I just don't even know what to tell you. Also, you have one step too many.

I don't know anything about the NG series, but if before you sliced down on someone's shoulder and their arm came off, and now it doesn't, isn't that less realistic? I played a little of the first game, and if I flailed at real people wildly with a katana, I would expect parts of them to detach.

For reference, I reached adulthood quite awhile ago.

I do believe he said LESS realistic...

A ninja fighting a gigantic war machines with a sword and summoning dark powers within his arm is still more realistic than a ninja fighting a gigantic war machines with a sword and summoning dark powers within his arm wielding an extremely sharp blade that cuts through everything except human flesh and bone...

Oh for sure, if the game has 20 weapons but they're all some variant of the Katana and look and feel and play the same, then yes, still the same problem. But the NG series has some of the best combat with a diverse set of weapons, sure some of the larger ones have played similar, but having the option of cutting someone down with an Unlabored Flawlessness and never using it is better than not having the option at all.

You clearly are not a NG(S) fan\player...the best parts of NG is getting to own fools with different weapons. As a person who platinum NGS2 I can tell you that it did have a story, but that took the back seat on a long ride where ass kicking is the reason you got the game to begin with.

On the topic of soldiers pleading for their lives...who gives a shit. They were big bad men with balls of steel shooting at Ryu from a distance and getting a sucker-punch in where they could, but as soon as Ryu has focus on them its all shitty draws and sad stories? Ha! Well here is a big FUUU to you and your sad story buddy....who's next? There will be death before dishonour when I get my hands on NG3. He is a Ninja... a NINJA!! this is what he does and this is why we're here. I wish they make a taunt for Ryu that say "cool story bro" right before an OT.

Did you just use getting platinum trophies as some kind of credential? Okay ...

And, sure, Ninja Gaiden 2 had a story. You know, in the same way that the act of making your bed is a story. Because everything we do is at least a metaphorical narrative that ascribes meaning and culture and a story to everything in our lives, even those things that don't really have any kind of story at all. So in that way, that not actually having anything cohesive or intelligible to say way, yeah, Ninja Gaiden 2 definitely had a "story".

It really was foolish of them to show soldiers that crawl AWAY from Ryu as the first enemy type. Because THAT's what fans like to see.

NG2 had kamikaze enemies in the game, sheer difficulty is what fans like. The great the risk, the sweeter the reward.

I'm the biggest Ninja Gaiden fanboy I know, and I'm feeling less and less easy about this game all the time.

If every single soldier I fight starts begging for their life the moment the Dragon Sword comes out, it's going to be one long and annoying game.

I'd also like to see another weapon besides the DS.

Yeah, that last bit annoyed the hell out of me too. Throughout the whole demo gameplay all I ever heard was "DON'T KILL ME!" or "I don't want to die!"...

If you don't want to die, then what in bloody hell are you doing in the army in the first place? Or fighting a god-dang super ninja?

Agreed as a protagonist in any video game. If you come at me with a weapon or in a threatening manner you essentually wave your right to live. Hell sometimes just being in the game around me they wave their right to live.

I won't have any sympathy for polygons who wanted to kill me a minute earlier.

Because the phrase "more unrealistic" doesn't make sense. Let's say that the word "realistic" has a finite value, while the word "unrealistic" does not. Now, you can increase or decrease the value of realism using difficulty as a modifier, but you can't change the value of unrealistic. If something is unreal it's unreal. Nothing is more or less unreal than anything else unreal. Used properly, at least.

From the gameplay videos I've seen, color me disinterested. The kunai climbing mechanic looks horribly slow, the new "ultimate moves" is nothing more than a repetitive screen-clearer like you'd have in any schmup game, with the added annoyance of zooming in on everything. Plus, there is no real sense of power in it. You get the idea its supposed to be some ungodly one-slice-one-kill attack, but it doesn't look or feel like it. They just spray a little blood and that's it.

Plus, the utter lack of details on everything but the stupid katana is more than enough to not sell me on the game. I don't know about everyone else, but my favorite weapon always was the lunar staff.

And, just saying, but how can you get the feeling of "cutting through bone" when nothing falls off? I mean, does the dragon sword cut through, then heal the bone? When did the dragon sword become such a little bee-yotch like that?

Also, just adding this onto my post (no edit button), but Hayashi is full of shit. IF I ever play the game, I'm going to be muting whatever I can because I won't feel guilty, I'll just be getting annoyed.

Also, best logic ever. "If you cut the limbs off someone, they go from a living thing to just a thing". I guess if anything, you cut a guys arm off it ain't really murder anymore right?

I don't care about dismemberment! You're getting quicktime in my Ninja Gaiden!

The videos I've seen slow down combat to an unimpressive level.

Not to mention, Ryu is supposed to be a ninja. If I'm not mistaken, Ninja's traditionally avoided killing hundreds of people in order to stealthily kill a few. If he's not gonna follow that rule he should just go all the way, limbs and all.

And "real human beings"? What about the dinosaurs, bugs, dogs, demons, birds, and ghost fish I've killed!?

You just bought up the issue I've been having with this game. They're been putting a lot of emphasis on "killing another human being" and it seems that only humans are going make up the enemies. That means there won't be any fiends in NG3. And if that's the case, then the game itself will be easier because anyone who's played Ninja Gaiden knows that the fiends were WAY more different than the human characters (especially the greater fiends).

Also there might not be a lot of weapon variety since they want to put such an emphasis on the 'katana'. It seems we'll probably wind up with the dragon sword, blade of the archfiend, dual katanas, and probably two other weapons and that's it. I don't want to judge this game yet, but I'm already concerned about it's outcome...

Even if someone says "They take out the button prompts after the tutorial", time still slows down in that Steel on Bone move, and you have to press the corresponding button in order to not be punished.

That's the very definition of a QTE.

Actually, more recent videos from Tokyo Game Show 2011 show the combat going by a little faster without the button prompts and when the player knows what and when to press.

It still seems unnecessary, but by the time the game is released I may be over that complaint. They have time to fine tune the steel-on-bone mechanic (if its not gonna go away), I hope that time is used efficiently.

Okay, I see what he's going for. But seriously? You can't like, cut a dude's arm off and have him try to scamper away all frightened and dying?

It's not like when you dismember something the limb explodes and fireworks come out. You can dismember and still feel like you're REALLY KILLING SOMETHING WITH A SOUL.

Maybe I didn't read it right. But no limb severing seems... not bad, but not good... you know?

Oh hey, remember that game Blood Rayne?
You could dismember people AND they would scream and plead and beg.
You didn't even have to kill them, you could cut off a leg and move on.
I think I'll just play that instead, getting sick of bad lip syncing, non-nonsensical stories, and "inactive during dialogue" heroes who stand around and let bad things happen, because if you had control of them during the cut-scene you'd resolve the story in three or four button presses.
Japanese writers and devs need to move forward. If they want a "Dark Hero", just give the player choice. It works!
