I have another theory. Consumers have become so attached to their mega-hit games, that they won't take the risk of spending a good amount of money on a new IP.

It would take a huge sum of marketing funds to convince the majority, to try this game. The problem is, those who can afford that huge marketing budget are pumping out established IPs AND pushing that marketing budget for those IPs. Leaving the new guy with nothing but hope.

A new-generation might help in this regard. More people will try out a new IP if that is one of a few games out for the platform at that time. Dead Rising was succesful, mostly because it had little compeition at its time of release. Good game though.

Dark Void was pure shit. I put 10hrs into that game before finally giving up and shipping it back to Gamefly.

@xiLeShadow Well no. New IPs still sell amazingly if the product is well-received and has a very strong marketing push. Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire are perfect examples.

@xiLeShadow Why not just call a cigar a cigar? Nerds don't like to move out of their comfort bubbles so they're scared to try new things. It's why we get the same Call of Duty every year and 80 million SF rehashes.

Red Dead Redemption wasn't an entirely new IP considering it is the successor to Red Dead Revolver

My view isn't going against Ianfune's. I see and understand his view, and totally agree with.

Mine is more of a supplement. There are a lot of good games being released that are being ignored because of no/little marketing and/or its not an established IP.

Dark Void was okay. The controls were solid and the rocketpack was fun. There was a lot of satisfaction to be had once I upgraded the grenade launcher. Just fly around, zero in on an enemy, hover in front of him, pull the trigger and watch him explode, then fly away cackling maniacally to myself.

New IPs still do exceedingly well. The problem is that companies far too often try to compare it to sales of other games, or established franchises, to bar who well it sold. Dragon Age: Origins has sold over 3M copies. That's pretty good by most standards. But Bioware lately has taken the view that they, in their own words, "want Call of Duty's audience" and made the huge mistakes that led to the downfall of Dragon Age 2. DAO was a new IP, and a fairly hardcore audience aimed one, and it still did phenomenally well.

But, with all things, greed foregos all reason. Why make a good game that'll earn you 10M, when you can make a derivative game for less that'll make 15M? As with all media these days, it's a serious problem that entertainment has become more about business than creators getting their dreams out there.

@SirUrza And that's the question. Why did those games turn out so bad. I think it takes more than a talented development team. It takes inspiration and if the development staff doesn't have it for what the boss puts on the table then the boss should reevaluate.

@xiLeShadow - I'll admit that I probably buy more sequels than I do new IPs. It's not that I don't like new things, but unless we're talking about one of the superstar publisher/developer teams (like Rockstar, Valve, Blizzard, etc) new IPs are (GENERALLY SPEAKING) not quite as polished or feature rich as the sequels they generate.

Of course a new IP has to sell to be able to warrant a sequel, so I realize that's on me. But at the same time, I'm not made of money, so while I'd like to support a new IP which is rough around the edges (and not Dark Void, god no), at $120 nz dollars it's just unlikely to happen. If the game industry could knock that price down I'd be much more receptive to trying new things

Capcom. A company with so many good franchises. But also unfortunately a company that is led by manatees.

It shouldn't be so hard to make a lot of money, just give the fans what they want:

- A Resident Evil game that goes back to it's horror roots.
- A PS3/360 Monster Hunter game.
- A new Mega Man game.
- A new Onimusha game. (please let this happen!)
- A Lost Planet that fixes all the issues players had with the first two games.
- A new Dino Crisis. (you might not admit this publicly, but you know you want this)
- A new Ducktales game.

@Pure Black World Tendency TPS Resident Evil sells a hell of a lot better than Survival Horror Resident Evil ever did. 360 Monster Hunter would bomb horribly unless it was an exclusive. Nobody gives a crap about Onimusha. I'm starting to think that maybe, just maybe, you wouldn't be much better than the manatees at running Capcom.

Out of all those things you listed, I'd want a new Onimusha more than anything. Don't get me wrong, it's a great list, I just can't put how I feel about the Onimusha series in to words. Also, new Monster Hunter on PS3/360. Make it happen, Capcom.

"A PS3/360 Monster Hunter game."

Gee, let me guess why you want to see this happen. Because the Wii Monster Hunter isn't on a "real console" . It lacks "teh H Dee graphix". It doesn't have a "proper online a.k.a. not the exact replica of Xbox Live".

Monster Hunter Tri is the best one yet.

@Pure Black World Tendency I really wish they'd make Lost Planet 3. LP2 was amazing, yet so unappreciated, (hell, not just unappreciated, downright unfairly treated by incompetent reviews and news sites.) The style, the characters, the gameplay, the customization... My only complaints about it really just boiled down to online problems.

I should have said new MH for PS3/360/Wii U, of course. I'm for EVERYTHING being multiplatform. Tri sold quite well on the Wii too, there's no denying that.

Perhaps Wii U and PS3 could have some of the minigames playable by wiiUmote/Vita.

Whoever's managing Capcom now, compared the the late 80's and throughout the 90's, needs to get their ass kicked.

Unless of course it's the same guys, in which case they need to retire, asap.

@sweenish I'm not looking up Resident Evil sales figures for you, but come on. Have you been asleep since Resident Evil turned into a TPS series? It has been hugely successful. And do you know who buys Monster Hunter games? Japanese people. Do you know what console Japanese people don't like? The Xbox 360.

You're completely backwards about who is using their own desires as a litmus test for what gamers in general want. Pay attention.

@SgtDookie It is a smart and mature way of thinking, but I believe Zexion's point was that Keiji is a bit hypocritical in saying that, and it's true. He's done great things but he's also become a massive suck up to the west and constantly blames Capcom for why their games get bad sales, (like his douchy claims that they made LP2 too much like MH and such, which is part of what made it great but I digress,) and just all around needs to follow his own advice.

@ZexionArmando Except Keiji isnt blaming capcom for HIS problem. He's blaming them for the decay in the video game industry in general. And frankly, based on Capcom's recent track record, he's absolutely right.

Hell, Capcom almost won Gamefaqs's "most hated game company" poll, barely lost to Activision.

@YanDaMan Actually no. He's not "completely right." Just because a large portion of Capcom's fanbase are fighting game fanboys that keep getting burned by DLC and whatnot doesn't mean they're doing a shitty job in general. People just like to have someone to demonize for not living up to ridiculously high expectations when the fact of the matter is Capcom hasn't been doing anything bad that other companies of both regions don't do.

Everyone is just too busy paying attention to Capcom's negatives instead of you know. Monster Hunter. Again, they're just like Square Enix. Still a solid company, but people demonize them for not pumping out constant masterpieces like they did 10+ years ago.

And Gamefaqs? Sorry to sound like a dick but don't make me laugh. Seriously. The community there is terrible. It's like /v/ with usernames.
