This seems a little harsh, to be honest, Renegade Ops is some of the most fun I've had playing a twinstick shooter in quite a long time, due to the leveling up system, and the fact that the levels are so open, rather than just pushing you along an auto-scrolling path.

Agreed. Some are just to pretentious and cynical to appreciate a game for what it is. It has to be some hipster, obscure game deemed "art" for them to praise it.

Over the past 6 months, it feels like there's been a sea change at Joystiq. I agree less and less with the reviews, and the podcast has gone from my favorite to an "unsubscribe". Oh well, at least Giant Bomb gets me.

Is it just me?

I'm a little disappointed the split-screen doesn't operate like it does in the trailer ... but it's still fun nonetheless.

Yes, it does. Just go to Settings and change camera to "dynamic"

@Kabapu How does it operate in the trailer? If you mean dynamically moving about in relation to your car, that is a setting in the options menu (you may have already discovered that and be talking about something else though)

The demo was pretty damn exciting and I was playing solo. With a group I think this game is probably a blast. It's simple mindless action at it's finest.

I'm really enjoying it. The skill trees, replayability, and overall plain fun is addicting. Each character has their own interesting powers also, which make it fun to play levels over again with each of them to level up.

Dang, all this talk about it makes me want to get back to playing it!

I'm really enjoying this game. For a twin stick shooter it's actually got a surprising amount of depth with its secondary objectives, leveling system, and damage streaks

And I, for one, find General Bryant hilarious. He may not be that way intentionally, but every line is filled with such enthusiastically-delivered generic machoism that I can't help but be amused

Peace. Out.

I really don't get where the critique is coming from. The game's old school fun and mindless blasting from start to finish with cheesy dialogue to boot. Levels are varied and keep interest up throughout the campaign. High Score mechanic is actually pretty fun even for people like me who usually don't care about those. It's a solid 4/5 for sure.

I enjoyed the demo when I played it, but I just can't bring myself to buy it. I understand the story is non existent in this game, but seriously, the comic book story telling needs to stop. It's just an excuse for developers to be lazy, and I'm really starting to hate it. Infamous did a good job with it (because it looks like they actually TRIED to make them good), but everything else I see just looks way too lazy to take seriously.

@liquidsoap89 considering that they might have been on a budget I think it's better said that it was a thrifty choice as far as cutscenes are concerned.

Now no voice work in Bloodrayne: Betrayal was lazy in my opinion.

I thought this was a sleeper hit. Graphics and art style are fantastic (reminds me of Elite Beat Agents a little in the story) and the game is fun. It doesnt reinvent the wheel but a very solid arcade game that would have easily commanded $50 5 years ago (not a bad thing).

I like how the only negative in this review was from cliche stuff that made this game all about GAMEPLAY. The game is pure core FUN, and you know it.

"it's a shame that the game abandons them for drab underground bunkers at campaign's end."

You mean, it's a shame that they put variety in the level design.

WHAT A SHAME.

I can agree with you on that. I just somehow feel that a 3/5 is harsh considering the advancements this game has made to the twin-stick genre (mostly graphically). It really sets the bar, in my opinion.

Decent fun but it was ultimately disappointing for me. I think Luddy gets it right.

It mimics the look of the Strike series but lacks all of the brains and pacing of it. It's much more of an Arcade game, Ikari Warriors style "kill everything and try not to get touched"

And speaking of pacing - it's horrible in this game. It's nothing but constant explosions and timers counting down. Some more strategic fighting would be a welcome change to the "explode everything" mentality that pervades

The levels are fairly short, 20 minutes but you don't have a moment to exhale once throughout. I'm would get exhausted and not want to continue after beating one (currently on Mission 8). Some slow burn hooks could have gone a long way here.

I actually enjoyed Gatling Gears more, and I only bought that because it was recently on sale for $5.00, to tide me over waiting for this game!

Sorry, but I'm guessing anyone here talking about "constant explosions" with no "strategic fighting" hasn't played the game on Hard difficulty.

Silly gamers!

@Kirkpad - So the pacing is somehow different in Hard mode? I guess my problem was more with the levels and mission structure, everything is so completely rushing you along - they hardly even give you time to accomplish a level's side missions.

The giant red arrow right in your face the entire game pushing you somewhere. The slow-mo effect and countdown timer that appears when you start taking too long. I will of course try Hard mode but I doubt it changes any of those things

Have you played the Strike series? Renegade Ops is like a puddle compared to the depth in those games

I've only played on Hardcore. The strategy is the same no matter what you're shooting at. Circle-strafe, fire-fire-fire, and occasionally trick homing missiles into hitting buildings. And yes, there's still only constant explosions and almost no strategy.

@PolishMountainMan I agree with both parts of your statement.

Renegade Ops turned out to be one of my surprise hits of the year; and anyone who likes fun would agree.

I think Ludwig was the wrong reviewer for this one--JC would've been a better choice.

I have to agree with the reviewer. This is just another twin-stick shooter, and if it wasn't for 4-player co-op, I wouldn't even mention it in the presence of Dead Nation. Sure, there's a level-up system, but it's pretty lame, because most / all of the upgrades are the same for all characters except for the special ability upgrades, which has a cool-down that varies from char to char. The upgrades would be a lot nicer if you actually had more upgrade slots to use, but you'll only get to use 4 upgrades (and that's when you hit level 30). But for $15, it's hard to complain too much.

Great review, though.

This review made me post for the first time in 2 years! Honestly, the reviews here are getting a little bit awkward. First "Fruit Ninja Kinect", then "Bloodryan", now "Renegade Ops": Very strange ratings (compared to their respective Metacritic rating). Ok, you know what they say about opinions, but you guys call yourself journalists, so you should not judge games by how effective their marketing approach is but by how good the game is. And Renegade Ops is definitely worth more than 3 stars!!! It is an awesome game and surely the best twin stick shooter I have played in a long time. Get this game!

reading joystiq reviews is always a fun time... they seem to completely miss the point of games and concentrate on things like artsy and flashy side of games. They give 5/5 for cr@( kinect games and rate good games at the bottom.... it is fun to read though - how the reviewer doesnt get certain things and gets carried away by others...
