The pre-emptive strike mechanic change seems nice. Sometimes it was difficult to get it with certain enemies in XIII

FF13 is a guided experience. The fluff that made the final fantasy games of the past appear to be less linear wasn't there and some people just didn't like that. I liked it. For once I was distracted by non-sense.

"We have to get to town-x before villain-y destroys it."
"Nah, let's go race chocobos instead."
*get to town 10 hours later*
"See, villain-y didn't destroy anything yet."

I like exploring. I went to New York City earlier today to have lunch with a friend, but I got there early so I could just explore and walk around. I'm all for having set goals, but not even having the option of doing something else is pretty unpleasant.

Was your meeting with a friend a time dependent action that could result in the destruction of the city if you didn't make it in time?

@SirUrza Problem with older RPGs and their "open worlds" or even western rpgs....is the "open" areas dont really reward players outside of eye candy and in the end are a waste of time. I liked FFXIII because it didn't do this crap. I didn't mind bonus places like the game town in star ocean 2/golden saucer in FF7 but in dungeons they give you a fork in the road and the "wrong" path leads to a dead end about 3 minutes down the way and all that gives you is an extra 6 random battle encounters...

I completely agree with you. Not every RPG should leave out the side-fluff, but in this one case I didn't mind. Being blocked off from the next dungeon because I didn't talk to the mayor or bring the chef his Magic Spoon got stale long ago. I liked just moving from fight to fight to new area to fight.

@SirUrza This is the reason that I didn't play FFXIII. Everything that I read about the game before it came out told me that I wouldn't enjoy it.

I thought IX stayed with the FF formula and was the last great FF game. X was ok. I played through both X and X-2 but didn't invest a whole lot of time into them. XII had great voice acting, but that was it. I played through that game just enough to play the storyline but didn't do anything after the credits nor any sidequests.

When I saw that XIII was turning out to be even less like its predecessors than XII, I couldn't be bothered to play it. Just because it has a FF name attached to it doesn't automatically make it a great game. And the description coming from everyone that has played the game continues to make it sound like something that I won't enjoy.

Cool graphics? Who cares, it's an RPG. Futuristic setting? Bleh, I like my medieval RPGs thank you. Linear areas and no exploration? No thank you, give me freedom.

I really wish that some company would make a traditional JRPG on the current gen of consoles rather than trying to revamp everything and make it hip or just creating them on a handheld system. I have no time for handhelds. But I have plenty of time for RPGs. Right now the only ones that I have found myself playing are western RPGs since they are the only ones who are sticking with their formula and just improving on them rather than trying to recreate themselves.

No disrespect to you guys that feel this way but would it fair to say that you are linear minded and so like linear games that have no substance and direction...meaning you only go straight and are unable to do anything to change the outcome because it was already pre-determined...I like exploring worlds and searching for stuff...there is really no adventure in a linear game!

or maybe we like change from a stale state of gameplay? A game that knows its based on cinematics, growing, and battles as opposed to exploring branching paths that all lead back to the same place in the end.
Don't assume to know how we are because we like this one game you don't

Now I havent play all the FF series but isnt all the FF games linear? Its just that they let you explore the world and do some side quest/boss. Doesnt always need to be able to choose a dialgue and get a different ending. FF series has amazing story, they dont need to do what dragon age and faull out does. People complain too much about little things.. Soon all the games are going to be fan service only and nothing fresh that the developers wants to do. Or how thier story is told because people want X hero to do this and not that.

The battle system of FF13 would work amazingly with a Pokemon game.

Weaker attacks would recover your bar faster while more powerful attacks would eat more of your bar and/or recover slower.

In addition, you can combat your opponent in real time and adjust your combos depending on your opponent and yourself.

Well I can dream.

You obviously don't play competitively. As far as battle systems go, it's one of the most intense and strategic. The 4-move limit only adds to this.

The battle system in FFXIII would work well everywhere. There are a lot of people who bitch about it, but those hushed through the game (can't actually blame them) or never even finished it. I like both that and character development in that game, but that long corridor called Coccoon sure bored me to death.

Sarah was NEAT? She was there to fill the "stupid-damzel-in-distress" role. This position has been filled in video games so many times I don't even want to think of the number. Her character had no real deep emotion to it whatsoever.

She was just "the sister" and "the bride-to-be". That goodness this game has her as a protagonist. We finally get to see her personality rather than the crap "holy-maiden-girl-everyone-loves-and-will-die-for" persona that almost all shoujo anime have with their girls.

@Electrium The story changes. She IS playable...SE has confirmed this several times. Gematsu has far better coverage of this game and plenty of videos that show the player controlling lightning. I even saw one where she was in the same party as Serah. I think for the most part Lightning will have her own, 2nd story and it will alternative kind of like FFXIII did between your 2-3 parties for the first part of the game.

You really should play FFXIII, and before the FF elitists jump at me, you should play it for the game it is and not the name attached to it.
It's a good game, this is a fact that can be taken objectively, you may not LIKE it, but it's still good, I certainly had a lot of fun with it.
And since XIII-2 seems to be improving in every way possible (except maybe the main cast..), this is a no-brainer.

Why not? If Squenix considers it an FF game it should be judged as one. Saying we should ignore the name is silly.

Because all people do is compare it to past Final Fantasies, which in itself is ridiculous, is FFVII anything like V? is XII like X? is XI a singleplayer game? They're different, XIII is different, I don't play FF for the name, I play them to have fun, I got fun from XIII.

I thought the game was extremely bad, one of the worst I have ever played (not saying its the worst game out of all games, just that I usually avoid bad games). I have no allegiance to FF, unlike some people I accept FF games as being good games even when they aren't as good as FF7. FF13 was just mind numbingly linear with very poor pacing, the VERY last thing I want in an rpg is linearity and FF13 could teach a master class in that. The only way I can describe FF13 is "intense boredom", the boredom just smacks you in the face, Ive never played a game that literally struck me with boredom like FF13 did, usually its a gradual decline.

"play it for the game it is?" any other game that took 15 hours to let you do anything but run in a straight line would be vilified and burned at the stake. people that defend it are people who love the franchise and forgive the game's flaws because it's a Final Fantasy game. a casual fan or non-fan would never make it into double-digit hours.

I think your expectations are exactly what ruined the game. How can people have so much fun with corridor shooters, but when the gameplay shifts from aiming reticles to rapidly selecting commands, it suddenly becomes a bad game? You call it a "grind fest" but in fact, I'd say it was even less grindy than any Final Fantasy before it. People interpret it as grinding because they expected to get a break from combat to talk to NPCs / find chests.

FF13 was an RPG entirely focused on intense battles and gorgeous visuals, because that's what SE felt gamers wanted in this gen. They apparently made a grave mistake - most gamers just want more of what they already know.

"People interpret it as grinding because they expected to get a break from combat to talk to NPCs / find chests."

Uh, that -is- the definition of grinding. Nothing but combat-combat-combat is a grind fest.

"FF13 was an RPG entirely focused on intense battles and gorgeous visuals, because that's what SE felt gamers wanted in this gen. They apparently made a grave mistake - most gamers just want more of what they already know."

They always focus on top notch visuals, that's not the problem. The problem is they threw the baby out with the bathwater.

If Squeenix wanted people to "play it for the game it is and not the name attached to it", then they would have called it something else, and not Final Fantasy.

There's over a dozen games in a the Final Fantasy franchise. One is bound to be the most disliked by fans. This is the one.

If you watch the most recent trailer for FF13, you'll know that the other two are going to be in the game (as NPCs, although their involvement is somewhat unclear).
