uhh the cynic in me says these are maps that are probably fully developed waiting to go that are being held back so they can make more money. I'm always going to be in support of dlc because it gives consoles just a small slice of what PCs have been enjoying for years - but it's clearly being abused as a simple money maker by a lot of developers.

They do exist somewhere. I think they got leaked or something. Go to youtube and type in gears of war 3 blood drive. There's someone doing a bot match on it. And it does not look like it is an official video.

It's easy to be cynical about these things but I would just like to make this counter-point...

Games go gold usually a good while before they actually ship and end up on your doorstep. Just because the game isn't in stores yet does not mean that the game isn't being pressed and ready to go and that the developers are hard at work making new maps/game modes/dlc/whatever in the process.

It is really easy for a developer to finish the game, get it pressed and ready to ship, and still finish some maps in the mean time while the game is waiting to be released.

Just saying.

true, and sometimes they do what 2K did with Bioshock 2 and put the DLC on the disc then ask you to pay to "unlock" it. just saying.

I dont play these games. But I have to say I think it's pretty likely they'd get a big boost in popularity and good consumer relations if they would stop fully developing maps before the game comes out only to sell them later.

How about a shooter with an included 50 multiplayer maps or something? More sales from people going "holy shit, a deveoper that DOESNT hold things back for money!" would get more money than people buying just the maps.

@FuzzyPierce

Not saying it's the case in this game, but a lot of these "held back maps" are developed after the game goes content complete. They simply aren't ready in time for release and if you sit around trying to make sure every map is ready for release then you're stuck delaying the game over and over again. There's more to a map than drawing up some polygons and calling it a day.

@Xcrucio So what you're telling me is that they'd gladly make the maps free if they had the time before release, but they didn't, so that somehow makes them something they charge for?

If they would make them free for release why won't they make them free for post-release?

@blackangel209 What he's saying is they are finished for when the game ships, so they'd usually be included in the price of the game. Now, these maps are locked, which means they were indeed finished by the time the game went gold and holding them back to release as DLC is a bit shady.

Azura is a map that I've played on the dev build. It was leaked 2 months before release/ I was wondering why is wasn't on the retail disc.

I've also seen Blood Drive gameplay already that came out the same time everyone started showing the skins and characters before the game came out.

Blooddrive is on the disc, you can find videos of it on youtube. Most likely Azura and Rustlung are too. Same with all the day one weapon skins. I love the game, but its pretty terrible that they are holding back ON DISC content just to squeeze a few more bucks out of us.

No thanks, I've spent enough time digging out the last few guys alive who decide to whole up in the spawn of those maps with grenade plants because Epic was too stupid to swap the frag/boltok spawns on them (which would have easily fixed the problem on both maps).

You can easily find footage of Gears 3's Blood Drive on YouTube (and its visuals have been very nicely updated). Hopefully, it's in the first DLC in November because it was one of my favorite Gears maps.

As for holding back and selling them later, it's douchey, yes. However, on Gears 2 Epic put out a ton of maps post-launch and in the end there were something like 29 maps in total to play on. They're including extra campaign stuff this time (not deleted scenes) in addition to multiplayer maps, so I'm not all that miffed I guess.

Hiding maps on the disc and charging us for them later. (anyone who argues against me, just watch. This is going to happen and you're going to pay out the nose for it).

It's likely held back content on disc since people who've modded the game and posted video have proven they're there and perfectly playable if unlocked much like the weapon and character skins.

In regards to the latter it's a complete slap in the face when you enter a game of Gears 3, and you see bots sporting unusable characters like the Onyx Guard (multiplayer, not beast), Big Rig Dizzy, Theron Sentinel, and Bernie. All the while just knowing that since Bernie is confirmed to be paid "DLC" content, the rest will be as well...

Does it affect the quality of core gameplay on the existing maps? Hardly does, and I'm sure defenders will be quick to point that out that aesthetics (maps included) mean nothing and are not necessary to enjoy the game, and they'd be right. However, it's the principle of the matter that's just bull.

@LtCmdrChar - I don't think anyone (at least anyone with a brain) would call new maps just aesthetics that have no effect on gameplay.

Character & Weapon skins? Sure but not maps.

@Mcmax3000

Anyone with a brain should recognize that unless a map brings with it new gameplay elements (such as weapons, new interactivity that completely changes how the game is played, etc) such as the CoD Zombie maps, it is strictly going to be just an aesthetic change to on-going gameplay.

New map? Fantastic. It's new geometry to play on in multiplayer, but it does not change the gameplay itself. It's no different than weapon or character skins, but on a much bigger scale. Weapons are still the same, players will react the same, physics will react the same. The playspace itself may be different, but ultimately it has no affect on the gameplay players have been experiencing since launch. Will it change how players move around for a bit as they get accustomed to their new surroundings? Sure, but again in the end whether they're fumbling in the dark trying to find out where place A is or expertly defending spot B it doesn't change the fact that they're doing what they've been doing throughout all the other maps all the same.

To imply that a new map (that is strictly just a new geometry space) adds gameplay is like saying 'driving to a new town I've never been to has suddenly added additional new functionality and/or quality to my car's performance!'. It doesn't. For good or bad, it only adds millage.

again, for those of you that dont get it, they develop a game ...levels and characters and plot and everything , creating it all...then based on how much time they put into the game ( and money) they make the content of the game for the MSRP. It doesnt matter if they made 100 maps before the release the game and the game comes out with 20, the other 80 were too much time invested for the cost, so they become DLC. its a cost analysis thing, not a gimmie all your money thing...that is what EA and others are doing with the "online pass" to play if you buy the game used. that is greed, this is making your money back to KEEP MAKING BAD ASS GAMES LIKE GEARS3!!!!

You're calling it greed for companies like EA to come up with an online pass, yet say that what Epic is doing is covering costs of content?

You do realize the whole point of the online pass is so that the companies that do support such a system get their costs back along with the profit they're seeking. That isn't greed in the slightest bit. The devs that make the game along with the publishers that push them get ZERO dollars for every used game bought.

Try picking a better example to compare and contrast the difference between covering ends meet and being too greedy because that example you provided isn't.

I guess I could complain about on disc dlc, but honestly I never liked Blood Drive in Gears 2, and I'm loving all the maps in 3. Way better than even the DLC maps from Gears 2 or even 1.

The one map that I do miss is mausoleum from gears 1.

Because CoD is rehashed shit every iteration. Gears 3 refined Gears 1 MP with many more gameplay features AND dedicated servers. The game is incredibly fun, and I can easily put 100+ hours into it. Can't say the same for CoD series.

@Flesseck I love COD and play it every year from Nov to Aug pretty much non-stop and I'm not bored yet. The gameplay is what brings me (and millions of other gamers) back every year. Don't try to shit on it just because it's not your thing. I also love Gears and will be grinding away in Horde 2.0 for years to come (just like I did with Gears 2).

Believe it or not, there are people like me who enjoy these games and have careers that give us the money to spend towards them if we so choose.

I'm still debating on the season pass or not. On the one hand, I like discounts and some complimentary weapon skins. On the other, I don't so much like the prospect of giving them my money and then feel like I'm gambling with the content that will be released. I like to think they wouldn't short change us but you can never be too careful these days it seems. Does anyone know how long the season pass will be available for? I would rather wait till the first content pack is detailed (more than likely these maps plus some new characters is my guess) but if the season pass is going to be gone before then, maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet and dive headfirst without a helmet....

@skbkoy65 Ok, I can see the season pass, it's a good discount if you plan on buying the map packs, but.....why all those skins? I really can't justify forking over $30, or whatever the conversion amounts to from Microsoft points, for all those cosmetic gun skins. Maybe one (despite it's unreasonable price) I might get that I really like, but all of them? But hey, it's your money, do with it what you wish.

This is a little frustrating. All of that content on the disc and it's being held back to charge us later. So many people go on saying "Well I have the season pass, so I get it all for free!" No, you get it all for paying $30 in advance. And if that first DLC pack in November is comprised mostly of content that is already on the disc, then I feel like a fool for having to wait. The game only has 10 god damn maps, so I think we deserve it. Especially since it's, you know... finished.

I'll just wait for the time that they sell all of the DLC for 20 dollars. If that time never comes, oh well. That money will go to something more worthwhile.
