In today's jaded FPS audience, I feel like so few people remember the brilliance of id. I personally find this far more appealing than Modern Warfare 3.

It might not be genre defining but damn it, it's the first real game from id in over 6 years. To me that's at least worth a serious look. I'm extremely excited to see how this turns out.

@NaeemTHM CoD has been tired since CoD2 came out at 360's launch.

id has been tired since Half-Life ended the Quake II design paradigm for shooters. Sadly, id's shooters have yet to evolve, and quite frankly, Rage is looking like more of the same. Even if the technology running it is spectacular.

To MW's credit, though: when a guy gets hit by a bullet, he effing feels it. When an enemy in Rage, or Doom, or Quake gets hit by a bullet, he keeps on moving towards you as if nothing happened. Very lame; very Quake.

@Ovy

Really? You thought COD was tired after the second game? So I'm assuming you never played Call of Duty 4 then. I don't care WHO you are, if you don't think COD4 pushed the FPS genre forward then you're just straight trolling.

Also, while I agree that the Doom series and Quake have weak AI and enemies that don't react; the mutants in Rage seem to react just fine in Rage. In fact I love how they stumble a bit when you hit them with the shotgun. The animations look fantastic.

Keep in mind that the Doom and Quake games were made a very long time ago, and can't really be held to the standards of modern games. I don't think we've seen enough of Rage to pass judgement quite yet; most of the videos we've seen show combat against crazed mutants, who can't really be expected to behave rationally. If you shoot a PCP addict with anything less than a .357, he'll probably keep moving as if nothing happened too.

@Ovy Tell me you're joking- seriously. Anybody who says COD was 'tired' after CoD2 is either incredibly ignorant or happens to have horrible taste in video games- maybe both. COD4 remains one of the best shooters of the decade and probably the most influential. Just because MW2 and Black Ops are loaded with bugs and stand in the shadow of their predecessor doesn't make the original a bad game.

You also clearly never grew up playing real id games, or had no appreciation for them. The whole idea of this game is that you're living in a crazy, screwed up, post-apocalyptic world- so you kind of expect the inhabitants to act like animals, not like soldiers get him by 9mm in an Afghan warzone. So what if some of the features are a little dated? The graphics look amazing, the gunplay looks solid, and it will probably be genre defining in its own right. So yes, you're right, it is "very Quake".

Idiot.

@NaeemTHM The only things Modern Warfare is known for are: it's short length, heavily scripted single player campaign which elevated tunnel vision level design to an art form and of course the genesis of the over-pervasive levelling metagame in pretty much every game. And all these things are annoying as hell in my view.

For me, Deus Ex: Human Revolution despite all it's shortcomings was the first really big breath of fresh air in a long time. I'm sick of six-to-eight hour rollercoaster rides that only serve as glorified tutorials for the multiplayer. Too bad if one does not play versus, for a variety of reasons, from turbofire abusers to antisocial idiots to technical problems.

So, everything that tries to break the CoD-inspired formula is a welcome sight. Otherwise we'll get more games like Brink that try to place the metagame at the heart of the gameplay. If I want to level-grind, then I'd play an MMO, thank you.

I thought DOOM 3 was brilliant. It had a lot of problems (monster closets, repetitive environments, no duct tape), but the way it all unfolded was really well. It was a well designed blend of old-school action and new-school adventure and high interactivity. Some decent scares too, and the first 20 minutes are among the best and most entertaining of any game I've ever played.

Co-Op on the Xbox port was unbelievably good too.

When someone on PCP gets hit by a bullet, he keeps on moving towards you as if nothing happened. So is a drug-induced wastelander REALLY that much less believable than a series that is filled with so many plot holes and ridiculous conspiracies, it makes the Tooth Fairy look believable?

Did you know the .45 caliber round was invented for a specific purpose? Incredible stopping power. U.S. Cavalry soldiers were shooting Moro warriors with smaller rounds but the Moro (in a drug-induced frenzy) didn't falter when shot, continued charging at the soldiers and severed limbs with the huge kukri-like daggers and knives.

You don't have to be a mutant to be able to run through small arms fire, just hopped up on something (or have a neurological issue that results in pain dampening).

Tuesday cannot get here quickly enough. I try not to get too optimistic about games I haven't played yet, but Rage looks so awesome I can't help it.

@Spacegrass: Well said...I was thinking the same thing. You can't compare Doom/Quake with modern shooters, they were released in different eras. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Rage!!!

@quicksilverbalt haha, same here. would have definitely picked this up if there weren't too many great games releasing in such a short period. i have already pre ordered dark souls, so this would have to wait. plus uncharted 3, batman and skyrim is coming real soon.

@Fugaku Ummm.... It's open world... You just saw the guy roaming around a completely open landscape in a vehicle and then exploring a mountainside with multiple paths... This is linear to you?

@Fugaku

Every "open world" game is going to have its linear components/area. Borderlands did the same thing.

@Apakal I love when people assume that just because a game has one or two areas with corridors or enclosures that a game has to be linear. My, what the industry has done to us...

I wasn't honestly planning on purchasing this originally since I'm already going to be completely washed out of cash thanks to Goldeneye and Uncharted, but you know what, what the hell- I'm going to get it. It looks solid. Plus, Carmack gets big points for making the entire experience relatively seamless across 3 platforms and for making what looks to be one of the most gorgeous games this year.

And... Of course... It's id. ;)

This is a link to a shoe site. I clicked on it because I thought it was some meme-atic picture that was downvoted for it's irrelevance, fanboy-ism, or stupidity. Just thought I'd save anyone else the trouble of being as stupid as I am, before it is deleted.

Wow! The rockets turned some of the bad guys into a bloody pink mist! I've never seen a video game do that and/or do it right.
I know people like to hate on both COD and BF3 now adays, but I'd have so much more fun playing those games if I could turn enemies into pink mist with large explosions.

I'm a sick bastard like that.

I had the opportunity to play the demo of the game in QuakeCon this year and while most of the test beds were in Xbox360, I have to say the quality of the gameplay was amazing. Even in the Xbox360 the game looked amazing. The engine is really polished and it could be a contender to UDK quite frankly.

If Rage is a Generation 1 game of the Tech 5 engine, imagine what other games can be made that push the envelope into even more amazing looking video games.

Like many others, Tuesday cant get here any quicker.

Yeah I can't shake that 'more realistic Borderlands' vibe. That being said, I still want to play it, but it's going to have to wait. Borderlands was more tongue in cheek about it's plot, which I liked, but the AI did not impress me at all. I could potentially choose this over Borderlands 2 when I get ready for this style of game again...

This game bores the hell out of me. I really want to like it but can't get past the played out setting, the repetitive looking action and the bland color palette. :(

Sorry ID. Still love you.
