If it's free on PSN then it's free on XBL, that's how it's always worked.

MS only disallows free content when it's exclusive.

@Vcize Wasn't there some massive update for Unreal Tournament 3 that was kept away from 360 because they weren't allowed to make it free?

Updates and DLC are different. Allegedly MS only allows one title update before the studio has to pay (in order to keep at bay the waves of game updates faced on the PS3). Good a bad policy? depends on your PoV... I like not having to update everything before I can play, but I also don't like distributors throttling developers who want to support their products...

@Vcize

"MS only disallows free content when it's exclusive."

Actually MS only allows free content when there is no other option.

Remember when MS refused to allow Gabe to release free DLC for TF2? Only a crappy port of this game existed on PS3, and Gabe had been talking down the PS3 anyway. He had no leverage when Microsoft demanded that he charge for the update.

Remember the paid DLC for Left 4 Dead? There was no PS3 version of the game, and once again Microsoft had all the leverage.

Times have changed. Gabe very pointedly noted that PS3 would offer the "best console experience" for Portal 2, and the game sold very, very well on the PS3. Sony allowed Steam integration, which enables free updates. Microsoft was going to have to tell their Gold members that they were paying annual subscription fees for the privilege of being the only users who have to pay for their DLC. No more leverage for Microsoft.

Microsoft is distributing this for free. But trust me, they are pissed about it.

@copa I don't think Xbox is fighting with PS3 at this point, it's the end of the life cycle for the consoles.

I think it's more the case of Valve actually having some clout. It can take a long time working your way past the front-lines of Xbox's account managers to get through to the people making the policies and you can't have those huge discussions in one afternoon while you're trying to put a game on a shelf. These policies are at least a secondary concern to simply selling standard games and will eventually get ironed out.

@jsx92 Im not feeling this whole "End of the life cycles", and Copa's points were pretty thought out and not so easily dismissed.

I think both consoles have at least 2 more years left in them, and theres no real whiff of any other console releases (theres plans, but..) Even if they talk about it at next E3, that means a full year after that before release.. 2 years like I said.

Nice! This was surprisingly one of the best co-op games. It's completely different from everything else out there. It involves lots of talking, planning, coordinating, and trial and error. Awesome time, but definitely play it with a friend.

I usually hate when DLC comes out too fast for a game, but I would have loved for this to come a bit faster...so valve, Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: A horrible person. We weren't even testing for that.

This is a monumental moment in Valve history. They actually released something with a three in it. Now hopefully they can learn to bring this thinking to Half Life.
