I disagree -- I hope it doesn't catch on as it will never be able to compare with speed and quality of content running locally (unless we figure out how to break the speed of light).

That said I *do* think its neat to be able to pop in and watch someone else playing whatever game -- but far as actually playing a game yourself its terrible compared to playing off a local machine.

Completely agree nothing beats the quality of playing your game on a local system with the knowledge that you actually own your game.

I don't see streaming ever matching the quality of physically having the game rather it be on disk or a download.

I use Steam and OnLive. I don't really feel anything with actually physically owning a game. I mean I can hump my hard drives if that's what you're talking about, but that probably wouldn't feel good anyways.

Not to mention that these games are tiny and the streaming video eats up bandwidth, by the time you play these games at any length you likely could have downloaded them a few dozen times for the bandwidth the streaming will have eating up.

I was clocking about 1gb every 30min in Amnesia.
I have over 40hours in space chem..... that math, not so promising.

For some of the larger /shorter games it works out better but with "unlimited" bandwidth being quickly eroded into tiered caps ..... Onlive isn't exactly a friendly service.

Mind you from what I played of it, it was decent.

@GTThaAceman I never mentioned that it should take over physical media and it never will I'm just talking about how great the service is for what it is. Yes if you restrictions on your bandwith than its not a good idea but i don't plus I own a Xbox 360 so i know what you mean about physical media but I have also bought some games off the Games On Demand service which doesn't bother me at all. All in all what i am trying to say is I love the service for what it is and does its pretty advanced and on a 10MBS speed the games look great not perfect but great.

Yea I mean I get that and really it does make sense there. But if only it stays there as an option for those situations and not a replacement for local play/storage.

Problem is that everyone's hardware becomes obsolete at some point. When this occurs, does the person buy new hardware, or give into the convenience of not having to upgrade and use a streaming service instead. A lot of this depends on marketing as well. Throw enough money at the marketing and more people are bound to give into it and then boast about all the buzzwords the ad said they have now (I just loves my HD!).

I realize this is just hypothetical talk about the future and maybe slightly off track of the orginal topic -- but when you see how well people have adopted streaming movies/tv regardless of it being a major downgrade in quality its makes it seem like this could easily happen with games. This theoretical future of low quality gaming for all is just not something I'd like to promote personally. I guess I shouldn't be too worried till we start seeing exclusive games on these services tho...

OnLive needs to start adding PC only games for me to be remotely interested (Starcraft 2, Civ 5, Witcher 2, Shogun 2, Empire Total War, etc. plus dozens of MMOs) .

Adding a small number of games I can already buy on my consoles isn't appealing.

@HokieKC the witcher 2 has been announced for onlive, plus it is being ported to 360 so it won't be pc exclusive for much longer.

@lyons - Then I'll probably get it for the Xbox 360. OnLive has a much better chance replacing my PC for gaming than my consoles. So my point was, for my potential business at least, their strategy is all wrong.

@Timjoy - You're not going to see Uncharted for any other system and Metal Gear Solid came to the PC in 2000.

Pass, why would anyone pay for indie games that they could you know, actually own on a console or in some cases steam when there most likely going to be the same price.

I can understand using the service for demo's or to try games out that are being offered for cheap discounts... but if you pay full price to basically rent a game your crazy.

Streaming for video games is an epic fail, I'll stick to owning my products thanks!!!

because if they are part of the play pack then you could play them all in one month for $9.99

or buy them on sale for like $2 or $3

the consoles never have games on sale

I could be wrong, but aren't most new games full price? All of the game I seen on there system if you want full access you have to pay almost full price. All the games using the pass system all look like older games.

And lets be honest here, that "play pack" is no more than a gimmick to get people using the system. If/ when it takes off, those prices will not continue. Customers are already starting to see this with Netflix. Publishers are not going to let Onlive let there customers play as much as they want on there games for a monthly price... because they will make less money than customers just paying full price.

It's a gimmick to get customers, nothing more...

@CoolBreeze221 - I agree with the Netflix comparison. The second Onlive catches on those publishers will all renegotiate for more money which will drive up the cost of Onlive.

@CoolBreeze221 What do you mean by 'renting' it? You're going to have as much ownership of the game as you would on any other service on PC... like Steam for example.. you don't own those games, Steam does. All of your games that you bought on Steam can be taken away in an instant.

@Rawry - Steam can't 'take away' games you install to your harddrive. And Steam has an offline mode so you don't have to sign on every time you play.

So, no, it's no the same as Onlive. Onlive is cloud based so you don't physically own anything.

No it isn't... I don't use steam (as I prefer physical products) but even with steam, unless your break steams TOS you can keep that game as long as you want... it's yours, its stored on your PC.

Onlive streams games to you, for a period that is covered up to 3 years... this means nothing is stored on your PC, and after 3 years they have the right to remove the game from there servers that you payed for. It cost them money to stream the game to you, and as new games come out there not going to want to cover the cost of older games that less people play. You will NOT be able to keep the game for however long you want.

This is the difference... if I'm paying near full price for a game, I want it for how ever long I want it.

Speaking of netflix type comparisons...if you start thinking about the other bad things that can happen when you give all the control to someone else like that : For example on amazon (instant) I OWN Inception -- like not just rented but own it. Currently I can't watch/download it and it has the notice "Due to our licensing agreements this video is currently not available for online viewing or downloading." Thats not the first time its happened either.

Its speculation I know...but still...I freaking guarantee this type of crap will occur on streaming game services in the future as well.

On a side note -- do NOT buy movies off of amazons digital service heh.

dude, the sales on PSN are weak in comparison. They've had splinter cell conviction, metro 2033, batman, and a ton of other games for $5 on OnLive. that's a sale. taking $2 off of a $15 game one week out of the year is nothing

got my free OnLive console from eurogamer and tried out on my hdtv and it looks terrible it was like i was watching a crap quality youtube video and this was like on my 20mb connection. so they want me pay full price for games that look like im looking though a blurry window, no thanks ill stick too consoles and steam thank you. on a good note i did not have any issues with lag, they just need up the bitrate alot, but can they do that without adding lag within the next five years, me thinks nope not gonna happen, try again in 5-10 years.

What's wrong with you guys? Cloud streaming IS the future. No more trade ins, no more retail stores in about 8-15 years you'll be hard pressed to actually find physical media of any kind! It's not up to any of us too, it's up to publishers that pay useless millions on packaging that could be spent on the games, graphics, and etc. Onlive has made a technology no one could have thought of making for about 5 years! You guys are making it out to be some horrendous service that shouldn't be out because it offends you and your physical media. Actually use the service for about a week and the feeling of lag or any delay is hardly noticeable.
