Capcom wants to violate your expectations, but in a good way
47
Capcom has never been one to shy away from aggressively utilizing its core intellectual properties, however iteration often translates to evolution, which can be interpreted as abandonment by the minds of die-hard fans. But, that might not be such a bad thing.
"We think that certainly some people's expectations will be violated, but that's, in our minds, a good thing," said producer Masachika Kawata, speaking on the Resident Evil series during an interview with Gamasutra. "It will hopefully get people to play something that they weren't expecting."
Resident Evil has arguably seen more drastic paradigm shifts than any other Capcom franchise, with the upcoming Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City fully embracing the shooter seeds planted by Resident Evils 4 and 5. Kawata views the situation as one of diversity rather than exclusion, however, implying that the Resident Evil franchise has expanded to accommodate many different genres underneath its IP umbrella, including shooters.
Of course, survival horror is still an integral part of Resident Evil's brand image, and Kawata's own Resident Evil: Revelations is said to be "core-fan focused" in a way that makes it similar to Capcom zombie romps of yore. Still, every relationship needs a little spark now and again: "I'm thinking that if we would have brought out all these Resident Evil titles, and they were all focused on survival horror, absolutely I think people would be really sick of Resident Evil."

Of course!!! everybody hates zombies!!! specially shooting them on the face, that´s why it´s so hard to find zombie games in this days. But FPS, now THAT´S something fresh, new and different!!!!!

you do realize through your snarkiness that this is third person perspective, correct? and squad based. if you want to shoot zombies in FPS survival horror, I think L4D and the CoD zombie thingy are your particular cup of tea.
or did you want Capcom to make everything with "RE" on it into an isometric tank control zombie crawl? (genuine query, not a troll)
As for me; hell no, I eagerly await ORC. If I want suspense, I'll just go play REmake again.

Sure "genuine" troll right.... first of all if that were right then RE5 would´ve been a more successful game, but what was the main complain??? right, the lack of zombies........and the 3rd person view well, some people call it moving the fps camera right on the shoulder of the dude, it´s not really THAT big of a change. but my point is that the survival horror point of RE has always been a big fact in the series, when they remove it, it worked for RE4 but then, everybody hated the "action" theme of the fifth game, so yeah.... people got bored of RE............when they removed the survivor horror point.

I don't know what the hell you are talking about buddy.
1st of all, when you see you character, it's third person. It's significant because you can see AROUND you character (as in, stuff behind you); that you normally wouldn't be able to see from a first person perspective without swiveling.
secondly. RE5 was wildly successful. it wasn't moderately successful, it has to date sold over 5 million copies worldwide. I can still get into a game even tonight. I say that because you keep insinuating that RE5 wasn't good enough, or everyone was mad about the infected, or everyone hated the game....
I think really you just mean yourself.

Everyone wants back to horror but these are the same people who loved RE4. Capcom I feel has been doing fine with the franchise, trying to cater to numerous consumers without entirely abandoning any of them.

@(Unverified) hey there is a lot of shooters on the market, but guess what? theres a lot of rpgs, racing games, sports games, action games, adventures games, music based games, games with demons in them, games with zombies in them, games with space marines in them, games with aliens in them,.. i could go on and on with everything thats been done to death in video games.
the point is, if the game is good, its good. if it sucks, it sucks.
this game is made by slant six. so it will most likely suck.

@Don Cheeto Yes, Capcom Management has been doing some major paradigm shifting as of late. For example, I've been conditioned to interpret any Capcom launch date as, "Wait to buy this for $40 once the real version drops in 9-12 months."
It's happened with SF4. Twice. Soon to be thrice.
It's happened with Marvel.
It even happened with Dead Rising 2. (WTF?)

@Don Cheeto , the new dead rising 2 is just a totally different take on dead rising with a different character. sf4 arcade was dlc you could download for ssf4. how is this different from having a game of the year version that includes dlc with the game?

I'm not sure that statement of Japanese games having less/worse craftsmenship than 'western'-made one holds up well...if ever.
I say this because Capcom has long been kings of polish and craftsmenship for fighting games and to a lesser extent other genres. All this know-how must mean something, hell even RE4 had its own distinct polish seperated from your general 'western' fps/third ps.
I think instead of saying whats better than the other what really counts is the idiosyncratic quality of games that work well. FPS has long been polished by 'western' developers already, I don't want another FPS with the same western design philosophy because there's already enough already.

i still want resident evil 6 though. i'd like to see where it leads after 5 , since 5 did refer to resident evil 4's story a couple of times. and it has to lead up to something right?
Posted: Oct 9th 2011 9:30PM abercrombieco2 said
@Tommy758 that would be cool , they don't really say where she is at after resident evil 1 story where she escapes , even a character like barry as well. it would be nice to see even the game involve a lot of the characters and have there stories kind of come together by the end of the game like 1 chapter is one character , and by the end you have like a couple characters stories lead them into the same place.

It would be nice if Capcom remembered little touches like this to make the fans happy (and logically integrated into the plot of the game, and not just some random DLC add-on or pre-order bonus). But this is the new capcom we're talking about....so, I am not keeping my expectations too high.

Not necessarily. We all thought RE2 was going to have some massive follow-up, as evidenced by the end of Hunk's mission with him grabbing the G-virus:
"End of one nightmare, prelude to another.."
But then they did nothing with it! Kind of a disappointment in the same way that Metal Gear Solid 1 ended and didn't per se have a strong follow-up either to what was mentioned in the closing phone conversation.

If you kept making survival horror games it means that people enjoy it to the point that it's worth making a sequel to it

It couldn't hurt if they tried a third person/first person hybrid like Dead Island. That was very enjoyable except towards the last 10-15%, after that it kind of dragged the player clearly being the fetch quest b itch.

the part that killed it for me at the end was the repetitive driving up and down the same g'damn road (much like the Borderlands Knox DLC).
The previous parts of the game, there was alot of that too, but it wasn't so openly obvious since I could take multiple paths towards the same destination.

@kentuckyfried considering driving is the fastest way to travel in that game, would it be a huge deal for you if there was maybe 2 roads leading to the same place? if there is a lighthouse on a big hill, chances are there will only be 1 road leading to it.

Well they have a point. If you love Resident Evil 4 so much then that game has already been made. No point in doing it another 5 times. Still there is always room to go back and improve on a unique formula. But I guess capcom is okay with dead space taking over the classic resident evil 4 formula

Capcom is the only game company from Japan that rarely lets me down & I usually support them 100%.
But....
Just give me a god-damned release date for RE:ORC already!
I will be playing with friends on Day 1, guaranteed!
Then get to work on getting those 3DS games, Revelations & Mercs, up on XBL along with completing the sage by getting 0, 1, 2, 3 available Games on Demand.
In the meantime I'll be playing Dead Rising 2, Lost Planet 2 & MvC3.
I also can't wait to see what RE6 will be like, I enjoyed every other part so this will be no different.

And, I'm glad that RE is trying to appeal to both action and horror. I loved 4 and 5 (Co-op was amazing, and Mercs is addicting still), and REmake is one of the scariest games I ever played.

A role playing game based in the Resident Evil universe would be pretty cool. Done well, of course. Make it like Mass Effect and it would be awesome.
