I wish I had gotten the console version of this post; at least readable text would have eventually popped in five seconds after the article rendered.

This, and DRM are just two of the reasons why I don't buy PC games on launch.

There's like a 90% chance that the game is still incomplete when it launches... It's like they charge premium to let players beta test at launch.

The really sad thing is the dev/pubs are probably looking at the lower launch purchase trend on the PC and figuring.

"We don't need to bother polishing this because no one buys at launch" as well as "People must be pirating this! we need more DRM!"

When it is exactly those two reasons that people are stearing clear of early purchases on the PC. So what we will likely see is more games that are less polished with more DRM..... its nice to know the system works.

@HellFlyer - This is starting to happen in consoles too. Since they're becoming PC's, developers are releasing incomplete games and day 1 patches... It will only get worse.

@Scuffles - Sad but true.

They also tend to look only at retail PC sales, which is itself a massive part of the problem because few people buy physical PC copies; at this moment, I'm pretty sure the number of copies of RAGE sold through Steam alone outnumber retail copies by 10 times. They're focusing on 5-10% of their total sales, saying, "There's not enough people to warrant the extra time and polish" while simultaneously pissing off the remainder of their customers; I wish this were a problem specific to iD, but every developer and publisher seems to have this problem outside of DICE, CD Projekt, and Eidos Montreal. It's also a vicious cycle: a game is released as an obvious console port with a large amount of issues with minimal polish, few people buy it, which then gives even less incentive for polish and improvements that would warrant a purchase, which then leads to even fewer purchases.

The real tragedy is that a lot of publishers and developers don't believe a PC lead title will beat out a console led one. Which is a self fulfilling prophecy. If you don't make the PC version the lead, it obviously won't win out. Though there have been a few odd rare expections. Bioshock and ME2 both sold better on PC than either single console somehow.

But with so few companies even willing to try and PC lead, we'll just keep hearing the same bullshit how "PC is dying" and "pirates are ruining everything!" (like they don't exist on consoles) I'll just point this out, Battlefield 3's beta had TEN TIMES the number of PC betas as 360.

You are aware this is because digital distrubution sites tend to have you agree to NDA's about the sales of your game. It sucks when you're trying to get funding for a new game and your game sold like hotcakes on steam, but you're not allowed to disclose the information simply because STEAM doesn't want sales stats to be known.

@The Aquacharger

I'm aware of the NDA's publishers have with Valve that prevent them from releasing digital sales statistics; just because you, I, and the rest of the internet don't have access to those numbers doesn't mean the publishers don't have them firmly in hand. And that's what makes the "the console version of game X outsold the PC version by 5x at retail, so we're wasting time and money giving it extra polish" thing all that more troubling. We all know that 75-95% of any multiplatform title's PC sales come from digital distribution and, in most cases, they're pretty comparable to console sales on a platform to platform basis; you might move fewer copies, but you make more profit on each PC version sold compared to what you would from PS3 or Xbox 360 sales (licensing costs and royalties eat up an alarming amount of a game's production costs). I digress. If you know most of your PC customers aren't going to be buying through any retail channel, why use low retail sales as an excuse to give that game further polish?

And honestly, with the popularity of HD remakes, why wouldn't you give that version extra polish? You've already made the higher quality art and geometry assets; when the next console generation comes around, you can use them, bump up the resolution a few times, and resell it at $19.99-$39.99.

Agree regarding patches becoming prevalent even on consoles, but isn't there still a difference: publishers can release a game on PC however they like, but on consoles it has to pass some kind of manufacturer verification as well? At least I thought that was the case.

In addition, you don't have issues like this one with particular graphics cards and drivers having a problem; there are no separate graphics cards/drivers, it's all built into the system.

So, even though the situation might be getting worse regarding console games, they are still likely to remain more reliable.

They can't share the numbers with share holders is the problem. Share holders see the game sold X ammount on PC which is less thenY ammount on console. Share holders then demand console versions and less focus towards PC.

"just wonder for how long these stupid consoles will be keeping us back. So lame and old"

I see many PC gamers complain about this but I actually like console ports. Consoles are running on 2-3 generations old hardware but they still get impressive games that my 2 year old system can run flawlessly @ high frame rates with 1920x1200 res and 4x AA.

To be honest I don't see a reason for much better graphics than, say, Mass Effect 2 maxed out on PCs. Incremental increase in visual fidelity will just cost exponentially more in time and money investment that could go into other areas of development that could use more improvement (voice actors, script writers, story lines, character artists, Quality Assurance, etc).

I'd say console port graphics on high end PCs are enough. It's time to concentrate on fun and reliability.

Why would Valve do that? It's like shooting themselves in the foot. I would think they would want to brag about how well the sales are doing through their service.
I'm not saying you're wrong, it just boggles my mind why they would do something like that. Which only reinforces the cycle Jackal was describing.

Joystiq, your drivers sucked. I already updated mine and I'm still getting horrendous blurry pop-in every time I read the next word.

I sent an e-mail about this and Joystiq replied back:

""You can choose to design a website around the specs of Google Chrome and make FireFox versions that fail to hit the design point, or design around the specs of FireFox and have Google Chrome provide incremental quality improvements. We chose the latter."

Never again, Joystiq.

Okay, I laughed at the Firefox v Chrome comparison. Mostly because Chrome is sorta like beta testing a browser, which is so very much a PC thing. (not that I'm complaining, posting from it now) Firefox was more stable, but also bloated, slower, and full of suck.

Bwah? Shouldn't it be up to the developer to release a game that works with graphic cards instead of vendors releasing special BETA drivers that work with the game. (I'm also looking at you Battlefield3)
