Not surprising, I guess. I'd like another console one or for the Vita, with the PSP on it's way out.

Sega = idiots! Why they took this to the PSP in the first place I will never know. I don't have a PSP so I guess the original will be all that I will ever see of this series.

Here I'll tell you why.

This game is a Japanese RPG. In Japan, the PSP is extremely popular!!!

Make game for extremely popular platform.

Super Profit!!

If that was the case, then they wouldn't have bothered with VC2. I think they should have keep the series on PS3. Less piracy and better chance of people buying.

I agree that they should have kept it to PS3. Never a good idea to change platforms after the first installment of a new game series.

But, dear Sega - if you want to provide HD remasters of VC2 & 3 for PS3 I will buy them!

Honestly, they should've kept it on the 360, like originally planned, until Sony got its paws on it and paid to make it exclusive.

If it was on the 360 from the get-go, they might've been on VC4!

@Pure Black World Tendency They don't even have to be HD. Just make them available for the PS3 in some form and I will gladly give Sega more money. Hell I already have Valkyria Chronicles 2 but if they released both of the PSP versions together then I would gladly buy it.

I didn't miss that. You made a good point. It was one of the PS3's earlier titles, and I believe it was before the price drop, so it might have flown under a lot of people's radar.

But even then, it sold over 500,000 copies.

I know! I literally bought a PS3 to play VC, and sold it after beating it (and then being disappointed in RE3 and GTA IV).

I would probably convert back to play another VC and maybe try Heavy Rain.

it's not really a subject of debate.

you can refuse to believe it if you want, but Sega outright acknowledged that the shift to the PSP was to offset the high production costs of the PS3 and try to make the series profitable.
the reason they gambled on continuing the series is they acknowledged the critical acclaim the first game got, but they lost money on it.

Taking Japanese in school was what made me learn it in the first place.

Try to actually look beneath the surface next time; the cheap shot was evaded rather easily.

@Narmo23 Just realized that my last post was.. my 3rd! What awesomeness.

To end things because I honestly don't want to have some pointless discussion on the internet:

1. Yeah, I beat the game. Yes, I understood what was happening and why based on my knowledge of the language.

2. Yeah, your Japanese is probably better than mine (11 years staying in Japan vs. "lol" school Japanese + housing a Japanese exchange student). I could honestly care less, however, so sorry!

Although I am smart enough to get on PSP blogs as a non-PSP user, and then complain about a game that I think shouldn't be on the PSP, just for the heck of being some exclusive/separatist fanatic.

Understandable.

Once shooter "fever" dies in the Western markets, then maybe we will start seeing more diversity in the gaming market here.

That is, if shooter "fever" ever dies off. Right now everyone is pumping shooter after shooter after shooter. And if that wasn't enough, they are making non-shooter IPs, into shooters themselves.

Ugh...they should port it to 3DS. =)

Please. If you're going to give anyone shit for lack of diversity in the video game market, make it the Japanese. They haven't come up with a new idea for years now.

The industry's going to be chasing "fevers" collectively rather than be more diverse as soon as (or, if ever) the "shooter fever" dies.

Publishers can't be arsed to take risks anymore, because they'd rather pump out crap, derivative titles and shutter studios that produce them when they're not selling like CoD, rather than find a niche and makes games for that niche within those constraints.

So apparently I should've pirated VC2 instead of buying it at full retail to support Sega. Thanks, Sega!

Anyway, they don't need to do a full localization. Just translate the UI (already done with strings from VC2) and subtitle the Japanese voice acting in some vaguely understandable Engrish. Feed it through Google Translate, whatever. You don't have to dub everything...

Two Years Ago:

Japan: "The only way we can survive is to make all of our games like Western games and aggressively pursue the Western audience!"

Japan: "Who cares if we have fans that buy our games, we will never release our stuff outside of Japan! Take that, Western gamers!"

"and that Valkyria Chronicles 2 didn't sell well enough to justify localization."

Did Sega HONESTLY expect a game that BARELY improved upon the original and was shifted to a new platform to sell well to begin with? VC2 replaced the somewhat interesting story from the first game with a cliché anime-based school storyline and the game's only real improvement was the ability to "promote" units to stronger classes. In return, the game suffered in every other regard, including the choice of platform. Yes, the PSP is big in Japan, but Sega needs to realize that not everyone that bought the original necessarily has a PSP to play the new game.

The disappointing thing is that VC3 is EASILY better than 2 was, in every regard. Maybe they should have not localized 2 and tested the water with 3 instead. Oh well, it's not like Sega's actually been great to consumers since they got bought by Sammy. I stopped thinking that Sega could actually do something right a long time ago. At this rate, with this, what Nintendo is up to, etc., I think I might pass on the next generation of gaming altogether. For every gem like VC1, there's way too much crap that it just makes it not worth it.

Sega should set up a Kickstarter project and let the fans fund the localization, and if you kick in $10 you get a $10 off code for the game or something like that. Then they don't have to guess whether it's popular enough, if it's popular enough it will pay for itself.
