If someone tells you you have won a 'prize' don't send them your personal information including birth date and mother's maiden name.

There is zero evidence this is more than phishing/social engineering. That's not the same as a 'hack' by the way.

To be honest I don't think this is a result of a phishing scam, but rather a people used a database of email/passwords from another site and tried those combination on XBL and some worked(Much like what just happened to Sony). Its a problem of password reuse, but you are right still not a hack.

bingo. my account got hacked about a month ago, and i've never given my account details to anyone or any service. it was kinda my fault, as i never bothered to change my password from my lowest-security password. anyway, whoever got in bout $125 worth of MS points, but i got the account locked before they spent them. i do remember that three Madden or FIFA games (can't remember which) showed up in my recently played games list when i got the account back.

@dakoe3 got hacked myself last week.
As I was talking to someone at Xbox live they were watching as my MS points were disappearing.
After calling Xbox Live the 1st day I called them with some additional info. The hacker then tried to add his email address to my XBL account so I had his email. Glad I called the next day because whoever handled it the first time closed the damn investigation by "mistake".
Not really sure how they did it.

I googled the email address and found out the person is from China and found them on a website selling MS points (10,000 for $1), PSN credit and iTunes credit. I love to hack the ass back.

@Tunguska This better be fixed up. I've had nothing but headaches with Xbox service in the past not to mention (but looks like I am) I'm on my 4th Xbox 360. Wouldn't be so bad if I could use my profile offline to play my games and access my saved games. Whatever they tried to do to help me at the time messed up my profile so bad cannot play any of my 70+ downloaded games offline.

think i've read about similar incidents elsewhere, and the targets have been folks who had other accounts with the same login/pass compromised on other sites.

Xbox may still be secure, but only as secure as every other site that shares the same login.

If their user database has been compromised then so would Hotmail, Zune, Office, Live, WindowsSync, and every other service they own. It would be a much bigger deal than Sonys was. They havent been compromised.

Remember, Microsoft is a Software company at heart and knows how to lock things down from hackers if needed.

Except, my first charges came through zune, the second batch came through Xbox Live, but the points were all used on Xbox Live.

So, before claiming I'm wrong, look a little more into it.

@LordPoncho - That doesn't mean that Microsoft was hacked anymore than them accessing your Xbox Live account does.

Your login is the same for both services so if they got access to your XBL account, they have access to your Zune account (or to create one with your login & credit card info if you don't have one already).

If their database was hacked, it would be huge. Bigger than Sony. That's not what happened here. It's likely either due to a phishing scam or social engineering.

They were, my first 2 charges were on zune, then 2 more on xbox live the next day.

Sony was hacked, and they are more than capable enough of having security similar to Microsoft.

Hackers are smarter than people who work at these places, they're more persistent.

Explain to me why not alot of people are complaining about compromised info then? You were obviously phished, or someone hacked a website that had a similar password and they guessed it.

Even something as simple of telling your friend over live you own a dog, or someone hears you say (or avoid) a certain word alot they can get your password.

If Microsoft was hacked, Then I and millions of other xbox users would have been bringing this up as well.

They haven't been hacked, Someone just Phished (or guessed) your Live information

Also, your saying that Sony (A Hardware Company that thrives on Hardware and not Software) can get hacked just as Easily as Microsoft (A company that thrives every second of the day on software, software innovation, R&D, Security, and other Software related stuff) then I think you may be wrong. Naturally, the company with the most software experience would be more equipped to handle Hackers and people that try to break in than a company that only worries about meeting the hardware specks as a major part of their business.

Of course any company can get hacked, its exponentially harder to hack Microsoft which is a huge head in Software stuff. They have divisions dedicated to learning about how hacking attempts work which they put into their products.

The other thing that makes it unlikely that they were hacked is that Microsoft is really friendly with the software development, and modding communities -to the point where they offer out high paying careers, and free trips to Seattle to talk to Microsoft heads of operations to help improve their own products. They give out free devices to help modders do what they do best while helping both the modders and Microsoft alike.

Its highly unlikely

Yes because Windows is such an impenetrable perfect piece of software that's never been exposed as having glaring security holes.

Do you want to know why Windows has virus's? Think about it, the people who make virus's will only bother going after the largest marketshare. As it stands now, Windows is still in the 90% Range. That means that the people who make virus's will be more likely to create virus's for windows because they can effect 90% of windows users.

Microsoft has an unwritten obligation (that they are commited to) to allowing you to run your programs as long as humanly possible. They want programs all the way from Windows 95 to continue to be able to run to this day. To do that, they have to take the code from the previous operating system and integrate it into the newest version of Windows to allow older programs to still have the framework to run off of.

Because they are forced to reuse the code, they cant exactly fix the security holes due to the limitations that the way that the previous OS was written in. By making major fixes to the code, they risk breaking compatibility all together. This is the reason they only fix the minor things that they still can from the previous OS, while patching the major security holes through the new security system of the new OS.

There have been big examples of the massive security holes in MacOS. To be real, The only OS you can go to for atleast somewhat protection against massive security holes and virus's is Linux...until it gains a larger market share.

* It wont let me post the links to my sources, but just type into google "Hacking Competition mac loses to PC" and it shows the results from code analysis and a whole bunch of stuff. Because I couldnt post the links, I had to cut that paragraph because joystiqs comment system was being a btch
