THQ's Bilson 'not sure there's room' for Space Marine sequel alongside MMO
33
Joystiq got a chance to chat with THQ's Executive Vice President of Core Games, Danny Bilson, at a Saints Row: The Third event earlier this week. He spoke to us about Space Marine's chances for a sequel, and what he plans for THQ this holiday and beyond.
Bilson says Warhammer 40K: Space Marine is "doing okay," and that "40K fans in particular" were pleased. "It's a really good game, it's doing pretty well. In this world, honestly, you have to do exceptionally well to make any money, because the games are so expensive." Bilson hopes the game keeps selling, and expects the impending release of co-op DLC and "more DLC after that" to help maintain its momentum.
He balks at promising a sequel, however, saying that the Space Marine gameplay may bump up against THQ's planned Warhammer 40K MMO, Dark Millennium, in 2013. "We've already announced the Imperium in the MMO as a class you can play," he says, "and if you combine that it's very active, as opposed to the more turn-based stuff. I'm not sure there's room for Space Marine." But there is more coming for you, battle brothers: "We are heavily invested in the 40K universe, so there's more stuff coming in the 40K universe, absolutely. We extended the deal for quite a while."
As for this year, THQ's latest push is obviously Saints Row (which is out on November 15), and Bilson lays out the beginning of 2012 succinctly: "We've got WWE on the 22nd of November, UFC 3 in February, and then Darksiders 2 will be our next big release after that. It's coming, we're just finishing it up, it's really great."
According to Bilson, the company is trying to narrow its focus, and has done so by investing strongly in five key studios. "We have five studios now: Relic, Volition, Vigil, San Diego, which is going to be building UFC in the future. And then Montreal, where we're building Patrice Desilet's game at the moment, so he's up there working away now."
Bilson says he's excited to have Saints Row out now, and just as excited to see it in a "fall season" full of high-profile releases. "For my opinion," he says, "the greatest lineup of games I've ever seen in my life are coming out the next two months. And Saints Row holds its own and stands among those, because it's not comparable to the other stuff. It's very different."

How did Space Marine do in terms of sales? It came on the same day as Resistance 3 and Gears came out a few weeks later PLUS Dead Island so it chose a pretty awkward spot to come out.

Space Marine was a great game, but as a non-warhammer lore expert I kind of felt like I was missing some of the background.

Two things:
1) I can see why they wouldn't want to flood the market with Space Marine-themed games, but in truth Space Marine itself wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. (Fair warning: I only played the demo. If it gets better later on, then great, but what I played didn't impress me enough to buy it at full price.) Because of that I'm taking a much warier stance towards the Imperium faction in the MMO if it's going to play similarly to Space Marine. That said, if they manage to get it to play similarly to Tabula Rasa, that would be kind of awesome. Quick, get Richard Garriott on the phone, he's not doing anything now, is he?
2) Still no Ork game? I am disappoint. Actually, get away from the smurfs for a while and start working with the rest of the universe you're "invested" in. Necrons vs. Tyranids! A Tau game that doesn't suck! Eldar invade Facebook for, I dunno, something sufficiently xeno! XBLA Gorkamorka! C'mon, there's tons you could do here!

@John Z Playing as a protagonist that either says absolutely nothing at all or just horrible growls and noises would be pretty awful. I think I don't mind sticking with the Space Marines

If you're referring to Necs vs. Nids, the solution lies in the convenient trope "translation convention"-- and besides, it'd basically be "Catharsis: the Game". You wouldn't play for a deep and engaging storyline, you'd play because you get to slaughter zillions of foes as a friggin' Terminator or Xenomorph, for cryin' out loud.

Man, I hope they decide there's room. Space Marine was the kind of game I've been wishing for for years. I would hate to see it's potential as a series pushed to the wayside for an MMO that, pretty much as part of it's nature, won't have a lot of story progression. I suppose though if they do play similarly enough it would be cool to just continue performing my duty for the Emperor for as long as the servers stay up.

Not just story progression, but the combat!
I loved the combat in Space Marine- multi and single player.
There's no way combat that twitchy would work in an MMO, unless it isn't a true MMO and is instanced to hell so you're never facing more than 12 other people.

I don't mind. I enjoyed the game quite a bit, and would love a sequel, but we don't need one immediately. Let the Vigil's MMO come out and let Relic work on other projects for a few years before returning to Space Marine.
This reads exactly like that's what the plan is anyways, and I'm all for it, especially if it ups the chances of Homeworld 3. Or a new IP of course.

I'll just copy and paste what I said on Massively. In short, its crap logic.
"Bullcrap. They're different games with different appeals. Just think about how many players don't play MMOs only because they are MMOs.
For what it seems, Space Marine, though a relatively short game with shallow multiplayer, was still a success. They would be stupid not to make a sequel or a spinoff (considering that the 40k universe is huge and they could do a game on any faction). New titles in the series would have to be bigger and better, but not MMO huge. They could churn out healthy profits exploring 40k lore through various non-MMO titles for years."
And on top of that, they have a developable, expandable story started in Space Marine. There are a hundred different ways to explore the Captain Titus story (his vague association with Chaos). They even alluded to a follow up in the final cutscene.
They just need to make sure to evolve and innovate the formula. Chopping Orks in half was good fun for 6 hours, but doing the same thing over and over again through significantly more hours over multiple installments might not work out so well.

No mention of Guillermo del Toro's ambitious trilogy? Go figure.
Darksiders wasn't an instant success either. They should concentrate on a Space Marine sequel. Dumping cash and resources into an MMO will be yet another misstep for THQ.
Darksiders, Space Marine, and Saints Row should be their primary concern.

This is so painfully short-sighted and broken thinking it hurts.
THQ are basically saying 'Another Space Marine won't provide a constant revenue stream like an MMO will, so we'll only do it if some magic forecasting somehow proves it to be a solid bet'.
We all know the MMO will be moved to F2P within a year after release, as seems to be the current MMO norm, bringing in enough revenue for it to survive after the inevitable mass server consolidation.
What about the market who won't/refuse to invest in MMOs? I take it as far as the bean counters see it, they're not worth supporting.
Foofs.

There's a couple options they could take...
1) Obviously, there's too much invested in the MMO, so scrapping that is out of the question. But if he's genuinely worries about a SPACE MARINE sequel, just throw out more DLC levels/modes. Ka-ching. More profit.
2) Devote all efforts into the MMO to be a solid product; then aptly release a complementary SPACE MARINE sequel for those in 2013 who need an "amateur's welcome" to the WARHAMMER 40,000 universe. The lore, alignments, and gameplay is easily just as massive as STAR WARS (in my humble opinion); so expecting people to just absorb all of that in a MMO is a bit much. Rather than throw them to the wolves, do the "side story game" approach. Which leads to option #3...
3) Make a portable sequel. With the 3DS/VITA being viable options, make the SPACE MARINE sequel on the handheld consoles for people to do MMO character buffing on the go, and allow them to upload "traveled grinding sessions" to the console/PC MMO game.
...I swear, I need to become a business consultant. This shaite is too easy to come up with. :p

Finished Space Marine a couple days ago.
I think it brought the 40k universe to life accurately, which is what Relic does well. It's lots of fun to look at, and sometimes I felt like a single unit in a Dawn of War battlefield.
But it's not enough of a game to generate 40k hype. Arkham Asylum won the lottery for the Bat, but Space Marine isn't at that level.

@Qmzn Arkham Asylum also had massive The Dark Knight hype behind it though. It's great that AA turned out to be a fantastic game, but it was going to do well in sales just on the fact that so many people wanted to play as Batman and fight the Joker after that film... even a year later!

To me, releasing multiple games in the Warhammer 40k universe prior to the MMO makes sense, to build up some hype for the universe, and attract fans outside of the Warhammer fanbase. I think that's at least part of the reason WoW was so successful, it had a series of games in the Warcraft universe prior to the mmo release.
You don't have to be a Warhammer fan to enjoy Space Marine; it's a great game on its own, they should build off of that.

Another SpezMahreen console campaign.... hmmm.
I completed the campaign on normal last night. The very last enemy is unlike the rest of the game (be prepared to move yourself about). next campaign...? Will Titan be joined by a Bright Wizard? a Shadow Warrior? A campaign for a Choppa!? A Campaign for a Dark Knight?!
I'll try the MPlayer this weekend a bit.
WAR products have been out there for years. I'd welcome another console campaign. I'd not mind if MultiPlayer was left out. Especially if the campaign were played in reverse order as the enemy, or 2 campaigns with same environments (one as good side & one as evil side).

Loved Space Marine. Kind of sick of being Space Marines though. But I loved the mechanics in place in that game a lot. I also love the universe.
