Fun, maybe?
People get too serious over this stuff nowadays. You can't just relax and say, "That's cool." Nobody is going to force you to use any of these features.

pressing a button takes far less time than saying "grenade".. plus has less chance of wasting one when you say "awesome, another grenade" & team kill your buddy
Analyse could be just put in a menu, when characters are met or killed in your game...
why slow down the gameplay?

By not shoehorning pointless Kinect features into the Classic render mode? I would say that is less "making fans proud" and more "nervously avoiding a shitstorm."

Really confusing for anyone familiar with military lingo, as you shout "Grenade!" when you and your squad need to take cover from an enemy grenade, and you shout "Frag out!" when you are throwing a grenade at the enemy.

why you need a kinect? why cant this be done just by using a mic

@Dibils It can be done, but then Microsoft wouldn't be able to sell you a redundant $150 peripheral.

The official reason was explained with Mass Effects use of Kinect. It uses the camera to make sure you're the one saying commands instead of anyone else or anything nearby.
I'd still prefer the regular mic. The best game I've ever seen use it is End War and it works great as far as I can tell.

Voice recognition. Simple as that. It's a lot more complicated than you'd like to think.

While obviously I think this implementation of the kinect is stupid, I *really* don't understand what is so difficult to understand about the difference between the kinect and a mic.
The kinect includes complex voice recognition software. There is a *HUGE* difference between writing the code to map a word that is already deciphered to an action and writing the code to actually decipher what people are saying into a mic. One of them is 10 lines of code while the other is 10,000.
There's a reason that mics have existed this entire generation yet voice commands were still extremely rare. It's a much bigger deal to pay a team of ten programmers 200k to work three months on writing voice recognition software than it is to simply add a couple of lines of code that say
if(voiceInput == 'grenade')
doAction(throwGrenada);

Mass Effects reason for using it was that the Kinect SDK already features a fully fleshed out system for using voice commands.
By using the Kinect bioware doesn't have to write their own system for interpreting commands spoken into a microphone/headset.
The same principle applies here.

Well, this is one of the good ways I thought Kinect could be used way back when they announced it. This and head-tracking. So kudos, 343, for at least trying to not make it gimmicky

Better yet, the dpad isn't used in the original halo and it could be used as a 'listen' button instead of chat locally. A chat button (up on the dpad) wasn't used at all in Reach like it was in Halo 3 as well. Four totally open buttons as of Reach.

Just to be clear I was refering to chat commands they're using kinect for.

Actually they're using kinect to prevent that exact issue. The cameras are checking to make sure someone facing the TV is saying it.

so instead of just pushing a simple button you have to clearly say GRENADE Im sorry but that just seems like a complication the only thing that looks cool is the analize mode but theres no way to get to it without kinect that seems stupid was it to difficult to add one more tab in the options menu and call it Extras
Posted: Oct 16th 2011 12:38AM Hoops said
@possdoom It has nothing to do with difficulty. These features exist SOLEY so Microsoft can tie the Kinect to Halo. If there was no Kinnect, they wouldn't have bothered adding these functions at all. If you have a Kinnect, use them if you want, if not, the regular buttons will still work.
