There's absolutely nothing disappointing about this news. The online play for Monster Hunter Tri was okay but really nothing to thrill over. The online quests are really nice but totally don't match the appeal of downloadable quests. Looking forward to this doubly now.

Sorry, but the online play for Monster Hunter Tri was astounding. Especially considering it was a Wii title. I easily clocked 300-400 hours playing online with my mates, since I have no friends in reality.

But in all seriousness, the friends I would play this with have all moved away. Roughly 2 hours or so. Screw driving two hours to have a session of Monster Hunter.

Capcom got lazy and I'm disappointed. Please don't pretend this is okay.

While I disagree on the online play of MH3 being "astounding" (my own personal experiences have been well... less than kind, and the overzealous censoring present in the game makes it a real pain in the arse to communicate through text).

I definitely agree with the idea of this being more of Capcom not wanting to devote time and effort to the game, and not it being technically infeasible.

And Phenyl, those "online" quests are the exact same as the downloadable quests we got for the PSP. The Wii is completely incapable of handling any form of DLC/patching, hence why they had to waste space on the disk to fit them in (and why you only get 1 style of armor per monster instead of 2+).

Oh. Well then, there's a point proven. I guess the enjoyment of online play just depends on outside influences (ie, if you have zero friends online like me). I disagree that it's due to any laziness on Capcom's part, though. The company's pretty dependable compared to others right now. Not only is the online function of Monster Hunter Tri a pay-service in Japan, it's also just not that popular.

Why not? Is it just not technologically feasible on the 3DS, or is Capcom just being a bit lazy, or is it to provide a reason for people to upgrade to Monster Hunter 4 when it launches?

Maybe they just don't think an MMO would be any good on a handheld where you risk the battery dieing.

@Sponge

I think it mainly has to do with how the series has done on the PSP. Without Xlink Kai or another similar program, like Adhoc Party, all of the Portable titles were only able to be played locally, which worked for Japan since you could get on the train/bus/whatever and get a small group of people to hunt with fairly easily.

Hopefully, Capcom realizes that this isn't feasible for most places outside of Japan and adds online to the US release, which if Nintendo is backing it, and they almost certainly are, it will almost definitely see release here, like they did with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.

No there will be online play. They just need to make add-on hardware for it.

Meh. Tri was decent, but by far my least favorite Monster Hunter experience.

Skip.

People in Japan still play games together with a physical presence? Oh man, now I have yet another reason to move to Japan.

They likely will, eventually. Maybe a port of MH4 after it's been released on 3DS. Or maybe an original continuation of the PSP's "Portable/Freedom" series.

They added multiplayer for TvC when it got localised, Monster Hunter on the PS2/Tri has always had free online outside of Japan and both Street Fighter IV 3D/RE Mercs 3D have WiFi...
I almost forgot that the 3DS is region locked, so the Japanese masses can't just simply import a US copy if it does include WiFi and even if they did they would have to play with all of us baka gaijins.

Not going to lie. After putting a few hundred hours into Tri, I don't think I could really play it again without the multiplayer. As long as MH4 has online, I will be happy. Maybe by that time a new 3DS with a second stick will come out by that time so I don't have to get that attachment.

I'm disappointed in Capcom, they give this series far less credit then it deserves, with some polish and more focus, this game could be a big seller not only in Japan but over here in the Western world where repetition and stiff controls let it down, two things that could easily be sorted out and some nice graphics, removing the loading and building an open world sort of like an MMO or sandbox similar to Skyrim and you have yourself a gem of a game.

I just get the feeling that Capcom is up to its old tricks, giving you less and charging you more in the same sense as they do hundreds of fighting franchise spin offs and ultimate/turbo/super/ultra versions. They deliberately skip out on any powerful consoles so that they can be lazier with the graphics and content and even when they do that they still remove features that make the game fun :(

PSP versions should have had online, there were very few reasons not to have it, Wi-Fi on PSP is there for a reason, not to mention we have to buy extra accessories just to play the game, for Wii it was the classic controller and for the 3DS its the extension pad. Kind of ridiculous.

Capcom, please, please just make FULL Monster Hunter game, Tri was a great start, lets keep that up!

Same as the PSP versions, so it's not too bad. Recently went on holiday and a tropical storm hit. It was actually great sitting in a hot, calm resort whilst watching the end of the world outside whilst playing MHF Unite with the wife whilst sipping on gods finest beverages.
All whilst hoping the storm would let me stay in paradise for a couple more weeks.

@DJshadow1 but this is 2011! Everything needs online game play!

In all seriousness it's really not something to get mad about but I bet anything people on Gamfaqs are pissing themselves and blaming Nintendo for the game not having online.

monster hunter its so stagnant and decadent, they should improve the gameplay, mechanics and the missing "ONLINE" component...

I hope that they realize that what its good and popular in japan its not always the same trend here in america, and then they blame themself that the west its doing great and complain about how japan its left behind....

Wow, that's amazingly moronic to not have any sort of online mode in a game that is essentially built for multiple players. I understand that it is wildly successful in Japan as a multiplayer ad-hoc whatever-fest, but really, this is why Inafune left you, Capcom.
