It's hard not to react to seeing Grand Theft Auto 3 on an iPad with anything less than expletive-laden surprise. Approaching the Rockstar booth at New York Comic Con this past weekend, I knew that the game would be playable on iPad, but my reaction was still that of shocked disbelief when I actually saw the thing running. It's GTA3! But it's totally on a little portable tablet! Incredible!
Here's something, however, that won't surprise you: what I played was still totally Grand Theft Auto 3, flaws and all. And here's something else that won't surprise you: virtual buttons still totally suck.
My initially positive reaction to seeing the game running was quickly tempered by actually getting my mitts on the iPad re-release. Which is to say, "The moment I stepped out a car, the game became frustratingly difficult to control." Those of you who played the original game (so ... uh ... everyone) will remember that, even on a DualShock 2, GTA3's strong suit was never wielding Claude as a rogue gunman, but rather as an automotive madman. In simpler terms: it was far easier, and far more fun, to drive around in a car than to be on foot.
The same applies to the iPad iteration, which has context-dependent virtual buttons overlaid onto the screen in the botton left and right corners for each of your corresponding thumbs. In my experience, this made driving bearable (but not by any means elegant), and the inevitable cop chases were damn near impossible. The few times I was forced out of a car (usually because it had flipped), defending myself became a measure of getting to another car rather than firing back, as the virtual buttons weren't very helpful when multiple police officers were firing rapidly on me.
Like Duke Nukem 3D on iOS and many others, GTA3 seems to suffer from the problem of never having been intended for a giant touchpad screen, and therefore doesn't translate well to the iPad -- at least the build I played, a month or so away from launch. But if Rockstar follows standard App Store pricing models and puts the game at a low price, it'll be a fun novelty for many with a low barrier to entry. And maybe that's all that it needs to be.

BTW, just so everyone knows, this app is coming to Android as well, and they will both be released simultaneously. So it's not a platform exclusive app by any means. Which is good for gamers who want choice.

First off, no one said anything about virtual buttons - if you actually bothered to watch the video instead of ASSuming, you'd see them using a real game controller with real buttons on an iPad 2. The exact same setup works 100% with all iOS and Android devices - tablets, cellphones and PMPs.
Secondly, there are several major problems with Wii U as a solution for mobile gaming. For starters, it's a Wii U (automatic disqualification). Wii U is also a home console (again, for mobile usage, automatic disqualification). Third, the Wii U Tablet is no good once you are out of radio range of the Wii U itself (likely a couple hundred feet at best). Good luck playing things on that while on your lunch break at work, or during your daily commute, or during down time anywhere outside of your home - you know, all the places people take their cellphones, PMPs and tablets.
On the other hand, the solution I linked to, works on any one of hundreds of iOS or Android devices - not just Wii U, so outside of the wireless controller, there is no new hardware to purchase if you already have an iOS or Android cellphone, PMP or tablet. Also, the solution I linked to is extremely mobile and works anywhere you have a 4G or WiFi connection, not just 200 feet away from the home console you purchased for your daughter. And finally, the solution I linked to offers something no other solution offers - true universal ubiquity. Say you decide to trade your aging first generation iPad in, and use the money to buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (an Android tablet). All the games you purchased using the solution I linked to, will not only work perfectly across both mobile platforms, but all your purchases follow you over, so you don't have to re-buy all the same games all over again. And the same applies in a year when Windows 8 tablets hit the market.
So to recap, the solution I linked to offers everything real gamers want:
a REAL game controller
with REAL buttons
with REAL go anywhere, play anytime, at home or away, mobility
and REAL multi-platform transferring of data and game purchases
REAL ubiquity; compatibility on the most important mobile platforms
and finally, REAL future-proofing
Wii U only offers real buttons, and no guarantee from Nintendo that they will continue to get 3rd party support for core videogames, beyond the first 18 months it is on the market . . . and that's about it.

Aaand that's the problem with iOS gaming. It's really great for games designed for it, like Infinity Blade. But I wouldn't touch this, or any other console ports with a ten foot pole.

Surely there are better ways to celebrate this hallmark game than this? iOS games that use a virtual d-pad and buttons everywhere=shovelware that is unsuited for the platform and exploit consumers, a real pity that they end up always end up selling well based on name alone.
Instead of this Rockstar should think of ways to best use the touchscreen/gyro controls and work around control limitations and not make cashgrab ports.

I don't understand why you were so shocked. While I'm sure it was no easy port (it looks improved in that screenshot), we should remember that two full-fledged GTA games did appear on the PSP years ago. By making a few sacrifices, like draw distance, they were able to get to fit all of Liberty City on the handheld.
I agree with you on the controls though. The only games on my iPad are the ones that don't use traditional controls, such as Fruit Ninja. Even well lauded games like NOVA 2 are just too cumbersome.

This. I am amazed how people go in awe over GTA III running on iOS. We had Liberty City Stories on the PSP five years ago, and it was the whole GTA III world, only more impressive, with new missions, vehicles, motorcycles, all sorts, and it ran on something less powerful and easily more portable than an iPad.
Then there was Vice City Stories which is one of the most impressive games in the franchise shortly afterwards.
It's great that GTA III is on iOS and all, but still.

@ruibing Exactly. Apple always gets a free pass and everything that happens on their platform is breathlessly regarded as the first time anything like this has ever happened.
This is just a puff piece from someone that thinks Apple are magical.

@Dick Socrates Thinks the iPad is magical? How do you get that impression? Out of 30 some articles one was about this and one is about Angry Birds. In regards to the idea that a game like GTAIII is on the iPad, maybe it isn't the most technologically impressive feat but many of us are old enough to remember a time when such a thing would be impossible. Even if it WAS previously on a much bulkier system... it is STILL impressive.
Not so much to me, but anyone I know who doesn't sit in front of a PC all day thinks that being able to just do a Google search from anywhere is impressive.
I mean I could just as easily say "Anyone who doesn't think a game like GTAIII running on a tablet is impressive is either very young or just an Apple hater".

Hey Apple, now is the time to build in proper bluetooth control pad support. Icontrolpad and Icade back door it by pretending they are keyboards, but if you would just give devs a controller API, they would eat it alive and youd have another peripheral to sell people. You want IOS to be a gaming platform, so just do it, already!

I think Apple should make a controller shell that the entire iPad / iPod fits into, giving it buttons AND touchscreen controls.
Or they could just redesign the whole thing with buttons built in next time.

Why don't they just make a gamepad for iPhone with real analog sticks and all? iPhone would dominate the portable gaming market and bring in hardcore gamers that might just use an iPhone instead of a PSP.
