In a refreshing act of commenting on rumors and speculation, Bethesda has shot down the assertion that id Software's work on Doom 4 had been "indefinitely postponed." Kotaku relayed the story from a source "claiming" to be close to the publisher, and suggesting that Doom 4 development had been jettisoned in response to Rage's rough landing.
Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing at Bethesda Softworks, tweeted: "Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed --indefinitely or otherwise." In response to another journalist, Hines described the rumor as "complete bollocks." Hey, PR folks? More of this, please.
Though it may not be officially postponed -- strangled in its bed because a sibling brought home a mixed report card -- Doom 4 (working title) isn't likely to arrive any time soon. This is id Software, and the game was only announced in 2008, roughly a year after we first heard about Rage.

Id will be remembered as a pioneer of the gaming industry that never really transitioned well into the modern era.

Doom and Rage are two different games, I would like to see what a Doom game would look using today's tech.

God, you'd think the reaction to RAGE would just accelerate DOOM 4's release. Why would you put one of gaming's most legendary franchises on the back burner because the new property is faltering? That's some counter-intuitive thinking right there.

Is it? Considering even the more straightforward aspects of Rage fell totally flat, I don't think it's unreasonable to think Id might actually have no idea what in the hell it's doing with something supposedly even more basic in premise. Legacy be damned.

"Why would you put one of gaming's most legendary franchises on the back burner because the new property is faltering?"
RAGE had an extensive development time, required a tremendous amount of money to produce (GTA IV levels of financing), John Carmack single handedly wiped out any positive hype around the game, the best it can possibly hope to do between the three platforms it was released on *might be* 1.5 million units in a year, and the much vaunted features of iD Tech 5 don't work well at all compared to what its rivals are capable of; RAGE's texture streaming issues rival that of first-gen UE3 titles on consoles (and are absolutely atrocious on the PC) and the 60 FPS performance target comes with so many caveats that it basically nullifies the advantage of all platforms (most people would have a good looking game at a v-synced 30 FPS than a title which randomly scales down to lower resolutions, particle effects, and assets when it drops from 60 FPS by even a few frames).
It'd make perfect sense for Bethesda to delay Doom 4 until iD's in a position to rectify the issues currently surrounding its technology (since its titles will most likely move from Gamebryo to iD Tech 5 in the coming years); if I lost money hand over fist the first time, I'd be incredibly apprehensive about green lighting and funding a second project for fear that the developers will push out another flop.

Good, cuz I loved Rage even if it was short and I couldn't go back to the wasteland after finishing the game. Doom 4 will be accepted into my loving hands as soon as it's released.

Doom 3 was wack anyway! They don't seem to be able to create on the same level as many of the other developers out there.

Rage should have been a PC exclusive or they should have first released it on PC then waited a couple months and then release it on the consoles.

Why would they do that? It was developed with Xbox as the lead platform. The entire point of RAGE was to demo the id Tech 5 engine running on consoles.
I don't think id needs to be restricted to PC. Those guys are geniuses at condensing engines for less powerful platforms. Look at Doom 3 on the iPhone.

Usually, I'm all for simultaneous releases, but in this case you may have a point. If they had tried to release the PC version earlier, than they could have delayed it long enough to make it actually, you know, work and released it at the same time as the xbox and ps3 versions.

Considering how much they missed the mark with Doom 3, I don't know whether or not to be heartbroken (don't get me wrong, it's actually a bit underrated but it's certainly not worthy of its title). ID needs to go back to the drawing board and realize they're going to have to do their "own thing" rather than try to keep up with everyone else.

It wouldn't surprise me if Doom 4 was set to come out near the end of 2013, to coincide with the original Doom's 20th anniversary.

well with all the mix review that came out with rage they probably should be investing their time in Doom 4.

RAGE is an awesome game. You are cheating yourself if you don't try it. It still impresses me with slick graphics and freaking great gun play. 22 hours into it and I'm still loving it. I'm scanning news for any DLC.

This can't be true. I can name a dozen games this gen that had rougher launches than Rage.
